At 6:40 Tyson specifically says several times he never did any weight training and stuck to calesthenics. I'm sure I read stuff one here about some crazy bench press weight he supposedly did as well as his "arm" routine, which now must be seen as total bullshit. Besides the tremendous punching power he also had one of the top physiques in boxing IMO, impressive if he was a naturally built guy who just did body weight exercises.
-
He's a genetic marvel either way.
-
If you train 6 hours a day as a pro boxer you are going to be in good shape, weights or not.
-
Pretty obvious he did gear, even moreso later in his career. Anywho I'm sure he did all kinds of exercises, based on what he needed to improve. He had the heart of a lion no doubt. It's a shame he stoped taking his training seriously after cus died. After that he was just running on rage.

I think he was on shit after he got out of prison in 1995. He was shredded against McNeely. Looked great (no homo).
It's possible that he didn't juice before that. He was huge and strong as a bull at age 12-13.
-
Legit crazy + built out of fast twitch fibers + gear.
Awesome combination.
-
didn't he once mention that more muscle doesn't add to the punch?

I don't agree with that. A heavyweight will always cause more damage than a flyweight
Speed is a more important factor than mass. But mass is still a factor.

force = mass x acceleration
basic physics

This is a topic never explored by GetBig. ::)

You do realise that is in reference to the forces acting upon the moving object, and isn't directly transferable to the forces exchanged on impact?

Would you rather fight a prime 220LB Tyson.... or a 145LB version of Mike Tyson?
Same skills. Just a 75lbs difference. Weight is the only altered variable.

220lbs of course, I like a challenge :D
My point wasn't about Tyson, just about how you can't determine impact forces in a fight from that one equation.
Would you rather take a Tyson hook to the chin, or be hit by an Airbus a380 travelling at 1mph? Now ask yourself which took the greater force to move at their respective speeds.

He lifted weights, in fact, there use to be older video of him lifting on youtube, but they pulled it down. And guys in his training camps have mentioned weight training too. Usually when these guys talk about not lifting, it actually means closer to "no set/structured weight lifting program" or "I just fool around with them a bit". Meanwhile, the "just fool around with them" could still be a decent time spent lifting them.
Also that was shown in 1988, which means it might of been shot 1986 - 1987, and his training program changed in the years following.
-
No weights or peds. Dude heaviest fighting weight in good shape was 222 at 5'10.

Cool video but that was at the very ass-end of his career. After he fought Lennox Lewis.

yes posted by Agnostic007 but seen it before... freaky music :)

I guess we'll have to change the claim from Mike Tyson never lifted weights to Mike Tyson didn't lift weights before ______. Then we can adjust that claim once a video shows up debunking it. :)
-
Whether he lifted or not, he d fuck up every single one of you. Do any of you bodybuilders think you d have a chance against Tyson in his prime?

Ronnie would have had him.
-
He started lifting weights in prison.
Before that it was only heavy shrugs for reps, neck bridges, bodyweight exercises and lots of running.

So it thought weights were the fountain of youth?

I certainly remember him lifting weights(curls/incline dumbell presses/barbell squats) post-Holyfield,in the late 90's. Maybe he did some lifting during his incarceration for rape

That's gypo Joe Egan in the middle.

Tyson talked about him and Holyfield having an unspoken convo about having the better built body. Evander brought in Lee Haney to train him with weights. Tyson saying he didn't train with weights is him trying to rewrite history.
-
I met him once when he came over to congratulate me once on a boxing win. (EDIT) Actually, i feel bad for slagging him off. He really was just a decent, genuine guy.
And a young Tyson did lift weights, just not like a bodybuilding routine. He lifted them when he was in borstal and he would train with them intermittently, but mainly as a boxing routine He would do barbell shrugs, neck bridges, press-ups and go for jogs with a 50lb backpack on, as Cus believed it would stop him from growing too tall and ruining his fighting style.
Read that one before. I'm calling BS on it,right now. Just like with bodybuilder's routines, there's a lot of nonsense online, concerning the training routines of fighters. :D
Not sure about the barbell shrugs either. In all the video's and first person accounts it seems ,pre-prison,Tyson just did the standard boxer's routines and exercises.

the guy won a bunch of fights over about 3 years- not even. at a time where there was questionable quality of opponents. then at the first sign of a challenge, he wilted like a flower.
he made a brief life out of being an angry bully and nothing more. he's entertainment value now. its quite pathetic.
in no way did Tyson have a heart of a Lion.

Becoming HW champion of the world at the age of 20 does not require courage i guess? You obviously don't know what your are talking about.

SAME WITH HERSHEL WALKER ..

SAME WITH HERSHEL WALKER ..
Hershel walker did a shitload of body weight exercises. I think a lot of this guys, didn't do weights as much as a lot of current athletes because their used to be a misconception that lifting weight would hurt you performance.
