Women have made at least 90 criminal complaints to police about the harassment by gangs at Cologne's main railway station on Thursday night.
Germans have been shocked by the scale of the attacks, involving many groups of drunk and aggressive young men.
Witnesses and police said the men were of Arab or North African appearance.
Mrs Merkel called Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker on Tuesday and expressed her "outrage over these disgusting attacks and sexual assaults".
The chancellor said everything must be done "to find the perpetrators as quickly and comprehensively as possible and punish them, regardless of their origin or background".
One man described how his partner and 15-year-old daughter were surrounded by an enormous crowd outside the station and he was unable to help. "The attackers grabbed her and my partner's breasts and groped them between their legs."
Most of the crimes reported to police were robberies.

I just left about 3 weeks ago after living there for 3 years. A refugee camp was built up about 20mins away from the home I rented. Lots of refugees assigned to that location, and I have no clue how the Polezi on duty maintains positive control over all of them. I saw maybe two officers and like 80+ adult MALE refugees the day I walked by their compound...not one woman or child in sight. :-\

It is so blatantly obvious that allowing hundreds of thousands/millions (over 1.1 million in Germany alone in 2015) of middle eastern immigrants into western countries will cause problems. It is so blatantly obvious that allowing hundreds of thousands/millions (over 1.1 million in Germany alone in 2015) of middle eastern immigrants into western countries will cause problems. The only people that still deny it are oblivious multicultural idealists. It is our responsibility to (compassionately) defend our countries. Many of these refugees and immigrants have no interest in assimilation. Most of the men consider women 2nd class. They want to create Islamic communities with Muslim law and customs. Allowing smaller #s of true refugees from oppression is reasonable, not a million. Let them change their own countries from within. People need to speak up before its too late.

Cologne sex assaults: Number of cases in New Year's Eve violence probe rises above 500
The chief of police in Cologne has been sacked in the wake of the scandal, after up to 1,000 men were allowed to mug, accost and sexually abuse women in "coordinated" attacks in a city square.
Police said on Sunday that of the 516 criminal complaints made since the violence 10 days ago, around 40 per cent involved allegations of sexual offences.
Initial reports had suggested scores of women were targeted, while just 31 suspects have been detained by police for questioning, 18 of whom were asylum seekers.
Speaking to Bild, Mr Maas said: "If such a horde gathers in order to commit crimes, that appears in some form to be planned. Nobody can tell me that this was not coordinated or prepared."

Gerd Müller said only 10 per cent of Syrian and Iraqi migrants have reached Europe so far and “eight to ten million are still on the way”, with even more to come from Africa.

Firstly, they are entitled under law (UN and EU) to seek refuge in the first country they arrive in. Though they somehow sneak to richer Germany from Greece and Italy, the poor souls.

STOCKHOLM — Swedish police faced allegations of a cover-up Monday for failing to inform the public of widespread sexual assaults against teenage girls at a music festival last summer.
Police hadn't mentioned the August incidents at the "We are Sthlm" festival until newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported on them this weekend following a string of sexual assaults and robberies on New Year's Eve in Cologne, Germany.
Stockholm police spokesman Varg Gyllander confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday there was "a large number" of sexual assaults during the five-day festival and that scores of suspects were detained.
He said police should have reported on the incidents at the time "given the nature of the crime." He denied suggestions in the newspaper report that police kept quiet because the suspects were foreigners.
"We probably should have communicated this," Gyllander told the AP. "But we wouldn't have discussed ethnicity at all."
Police in Germany have been criticized for not immediately reporting the incidents in Cologne, where authorities and witnesses later described the attackers as predominantly Arab and North African men.
Gyllander couldn't confirm the ethnicity of the alleged attackers in Stockholm but said "this involves young men who are not from Sweden."
Roger Ticoalu, who heads the city government's events department, told the AP that a "large part" of those detained were from Afghanistan, many carrying temporary ID-cards issued to asylum-seekers.
He said about 20 teenage girls filed complaints of sexual assault and that about 200 suspects were detained and ejected from the festival for sexual assault and other offenses. It wasn't immediately clear whether any of them were arrested and charged.
Ticoalu said organizers received reports already in 2014 of groups of young men and boys groping girls in a systematic manner. Efforts were put in place, including more security guards, to prevent a repeat in 2015 but instead the problem got worse, he said.

like i wrote the scum came over when the wall came down. I was stationed in W Germany before the whole thing happened and i can tell you W Germany was much better off with the Berlin wall. Even now people here hate the East Germans. East Germans complain constantly how better it was in the East. problem is now the scum come over and are very organized and violent the border is open >:(
