There's also vegan cat food, but it has to be specially formulated and costs a ton of money. Its also not as bio available as just regular meat-derived cat food. I can't imagine cats eating fake cat food are healthier than their counterparts... If you're gonna get a cat, make damn sure you're ok with feeding it what it needs to live.
Otherwise, like the vet suggested, get a guinea pig or a bunny as a pet or something.
