One would think that training for basic personal, fitness needs would be perfect.
BUT, for me , it's as exciting as watching paint dry.
Kinda like Coach , trying to kiss a 6 ft super model =Fail. :D

Howard where else do you post?

This link should satisfy your competition needs.

I know that, but wtf, I'm hopeful some fellow douche might throw me a bone

BUT, I really am serious about this and frankly, I have no clue what the fuk to do.
Put 25lbs of weight in a backpack and walk a half mile.
2 days later, do a mile.
A couple days later go for 2 miles...
Once you are comfortable with that....start changing pace from brisk walk for 200 steps alternated by 200 quick shuffle steps.
Do not post any more threads about this fucking lame shit until you work up to 30lbs and can do 5-6 miles at a 15 min mile pace (giving you leeway due to age) with no discomfort.
Once you get there, start a new thread and I will give you next steps.
You have been given serious advice. Now fuck off and follow it.

I'll opt for putting on some Depends and walking up/down the driveway with a 2lb load of shit in 'em.
Next day, I'll add a few ounces of piss to my Depends and walk 2 laps. LOL :D
Ok, on a serious note, your reply got me to thinking about improved cardio fitness and losing FAT.
I have zero desire to force march with a pack on my back as I did that shit yrs ago in the USMC.
I would like the challenge of uphill, fast walking on a decent grade % incline.
The gym treadmills are good but only go up to 15% which is fine for my current hippo-like physique.
BUT, I can see the need for more resistance on my future walks via higher incline.
I've got the $$ to spend, so I've decided to order a Nordic Track incline treadmill.
It goes up to 40% incline and has a ton of programs to challenge yourself with.
I'm 100% serious on this. Thanks for the input.
Rucking is easy on the joints, low impact and torches calories. You can do it on a treadmill, but that eliminates the outdoors and also can be tough on the joints. Throw on headphones, a podcast or music and it's enjoyable. My favorite ones are when the sky is clear, night time, and cold......good way to decompress.

Walking fast is too easy for you so you need a 40% incline? Sounds awful hard on your aging Achilles tendon.
Try this walking routine and tell me how easy it is. Most treadmills in the US show an electronic track showing 440 yards or a quarter mile. Some US treadmills instead of a track will show .25 as being a quarter mile. Start walking at zero grade or level ground at 3.8 MPH. This is a brisk walk. After completing one lap. Raise the incline 1%. Complete that second lap and then raise it to 2%. Keep that sequence up with each lap increasing 1%. If you go from level to 14% grade one lap at a time with 1% increase you will be in good cardio shape. Good enough to start a running program.
One of the reason steroid users hate fitness is because without the drug assist they are stuck with real reality of their limitations. It's easy to syringe and make drastic gains in 6 weeks. What's hard is doing an athletic work routine.

Flexing on stage in a thong or running a tough mudder 5k may seem foolish, but to me, it finally makes sense. For the past 20 yrs , I've preached and posted the gospel of personal fitness goals over competition. FYI, this thinking gradually sucked out all the passion and enjoyment I once had for the working out.
Now , I'm in shitty BB condition with no competition goals and looking worse each year.
I feel like a total douche, but, wtf, I'm clueless as to what path to follow?
Love and kisses to my getbig brethren
Eat a dick you moronic shitbag

Just take long walks everyday, I was at my personal best (strength and size wise) when I was doing exactly that.

Thanks for the reminder on where I am.
Sorry for the crappy thread topic. Good night.

It doesn't necessarily suck. Depends who is doing it and why. In your case, yes, it would suck. But not because it sucks for your situation. It's because you suck, and you suck so bad that things which were perfectly fine prior to your arrival become sucky as a consequence of your involvement. Anything you touch will suck. All of the downside of the Midas Touch and none of the gold. You are the ice nine of suckiness. I put on a full hazmat suit before opening this thread and still got a charlie horse. I hope you appreciate the risk we're taking here.
-
What is basic fitness anyway? Why would carrying weights around in a backpack mean you were more fit? What is the measure? What is the goal?
I get that someone who can carry 50 pounds and jog/walk with it for 5 miles at 15 min/mile has a pretty good level of some sort of endurance and strength combo, but why is that more basically fit than someone who runs 2 miles with no weight at 8 min/mile or someone who runs 10 miles with no weight. Why is someone who is running or walking more basically fit than someone who can bench 275 and squat 315 for reps?
The whole jack of all trades approach to working out tends to be goalless. This is one of my big problems with Crossfit shit. Measures of basic fitness get more and more obscure to where you really aren't competing against anyone or making measurable progress.

Why would the average person - who is 60 in this case - want to risk fucking up their knees and back to attain basic fitness?
-
Stupid thread. OP doesn't define his "basic fitness" goals, so everybody piles on with their fitness goals and their methods of achieving them.
Personally, my "fitness goals" are to be able to do basic shit without breathing heavy and have a physique that still makes my wife sigh when I take off my clothes. Everything else is secondary.

You missed the part where Howard should do his brisk walk with 30lbs of weight at a brisk pace off a short pier.

Your body takes a pounding moving at speed with weight on, doesnt matter how gradually you build up to it. The shearing force on your knees going downhill is disgusting.

Well, tbf, you didnt specify stick to the flats either.
Also, as an ex-Marine I doubt he's particularly keen to get back into loaded marches again. Not that hes going to follow any of the advice in this thread anyway.
-

Yes, I should have specified so he didn't go sprint up a mountain right after he read it.
Perhaps you should give him an alternative plan, as nobody else answered.

If i was going to give him a plan I'd probably recommend cycling and swimming for basic fitness. Also throw in a couple sessions of pull ups/press ups/squats.
I wasn't getting at you, Ive stole a couple of your workouts from your thread on the Y board. I just don't think moving with weight is particularly good for the body, esp when youre getting on a bit.

Did he really call him the "ice nine" of suckiness? Wow, a Kurt Vonnegut reference. I suspect this was cut and pasted from some where's else.

Good point on the cycling....that's probably the least stressful on the joints more than anything. For some reason I didn't even think about it, and it's probably a better suggestion.
But the real intent was to gain howard's trust and eventually send him off somewhere where a bear would eat him.

LOL !!!
Bodybuilding has gradually increased it's level of sucking for the past 20 yrs, thus, I may have a shot.
Think about it like this :
If anything I do sucks by default, then entering something that already sucks should be a perfect fit.

No, you.

LOL nice edit

I appreciate the solid suggestion , thanks !
I was tired last night and feel the need to clarify my goals/needs.
Doing ANY fitness program without a competition goal is my real problem.
It's always better ( for me) to be in the arena , then watching from the sidelines.
Doing my best and losing is 100x better then watching ( for me).
Thanks again.

Great suggestion and thanks for the input.
BUT, your cardio routine is very similar to what I'm currently doing now.
I NEED some form of competitive end game to feel motivated.
I need to bite the bullet, diet hard and for better or worse, do the masters nationals this July.
I've always wanted to do that BUT ended up talking myself out of it for many years .
It may not be sensible, but it's where my real passion lies.

Yup, you got me. I'm like the town slut that makes the rounds at the various bars and clubs.

The hope is, if I'm cycling some 16 wheeler might run me over.
I don't swim well, so this might cause me to drown. win/win

Hmmm, I'm not going to follow your advice on what to post Wes.
Hope this helps the thread. ;)

I suspect training for fitness is the way to good health. Problem is that this is not progressive weight training. Most of us try to make improvements as we go along....either buy upping the resistance or the number of reps.

Fitness training calls for progression in stamina, strength, endurance, etc.

I'd like to be as fit as I used to be cardio wise (won every event at school level (in school not national - I wasn't good))... be able to just run 20k if I wanted, go 10k over mountains and be OK the next day. I am too big for it now (110kg dry at 6ft1/187cm) but miss when I would just run where I wanted to go.
On point, it isn't so ridiculous to want to be in shape to DO things as opposed to looking like you COULD do things (which bodybuilders effectively do). Yeah I look good, but I woke up yesterday sore to the touch everywhere from a back workout. How shit is that?
-

I agree with this. I never even did any cardio/conditioning etc until maybe 2/2.5 years ago...but now that I have, I won't stop. It translates into everything - you just feel better most of the time. It's a good feeling to be able to say, play flag football, sprint 50-60 times at 90%, and not even feel tired at any point.
When I returned to heavier lifting in Nov, the next day it felt like someone hit me across the back with a 2x4 when I woke up. But I still want to do that stuff, so now I balance it - I won't let myself do weights consecutively, have to mix in conditioning / running / rucking....in other words, have to "earn" the straight up weight lifting days.

In the true spirit and intent of this thread, I'll poo poo on your swimming suggestion.
I've tried swimming for cardio fitness in the pool at various times over the years.
On a serious note, it makes sense and seems like the perfect fitness activity.
BUT, for me, I loathe doing it ...go figure.
Treadmill incline walking, stair climber, elliptical and hiking are all enjoyable and "fun" for me.
Cycling should work but it ends up giving me hemorhoids
