LAS VEGAS is no longer what it used to be!
Years before the majority of you were even born, one of the original Las Vegas casino pioneers, Mr. Benny Binion, used to walk through his casino, Binion's Casino, and greet his gambling customers buy passing out rolls of nickles to everyone playing a slot machine, and free drinks and meal coupons to the table patrons.
And would always stop and chat if anyone had an interest in chatting with him.
(To discover why he was so popular .... check out BENNY BINION on WIKIPEDIA).
I'd always have some reason to say. "Thanks!" to Mr. Binion for one thing or another (feee room and board, free nickles, or simply for just making an apperance to greet his customers on he casino floor.)
And one day when parking was just about free on a world wide basis, we were having a short conversation about the future and expected growth of Las Vegas and I can recall him saying, "If we ever charge you to park your car, take your business elsewhere.
And when Mr. Binion was home sound asleep, there would be some other 'figurehead' on the casino floor to make you feel welcome .
This was a common 'act of politeness' among all the casinos way back then.
But those good old days are gone .... and the bean counters have taken over.
The casino owners never show up on he casino floor anymore because the casino owners 'ain't' no more.
No one comes out to offer a hearty handshake or a thanks, or f free roll of nickles.
And the table games have changed the rules of the games in an effort to take your money.
No more 3 to 2 Blackjack payouts. Now it's 6 to 5 in most of the Strip casinos. That means that the HOUSE keeps some of your money every time you get a Blackjack.
I'm surprised that the Games Commission allows the game to still be called Blackjack.
And now the Strip table minimums are $10+ which enables the casino to take your money faster and leave a vacant seat for the next STRIP casino sucker.
And don't get me started on the BS called "Resort Fees" which will cost you about $20+ a night for nothing you ever wanted .... nor ever needed.
And sometimes you did't even know what a resort fee was until you check out.
And now Mr. Binion is rolling over in his grave!
Casino parking fees are on the horizon!
My suggestion is to STAY AWAy and it staying away is out of the question, avoid the Strip hotel casinos that want to rob you of every cent you come to Vegas with.
Check out the local joints. Give them your business and tell the others to go to Hades where even those 'customers' have more decent treatment.
(No parking fee, no resort fee, and even Lucifer will show up to greet you!)
-
What? You got Lucifer to show?
-
Never been to Vegas Bill but the whole world has truly gone to shit. :(
-
What? You got Lucifer to show?
I'm going to the nugget next weekend for my brothers birthday.
-
I heard that the free parking is over for mgm hotels. I used to be in Vegas all the time about 10-12 years ago. It's even changed since then.
-
Paying to park is bullshit.
Gonna get me a hot air balloon for means of transport and let it "hover" tied to a tree. It's not on land, so no parking fee's!
-
Mmkay..., the point of your post is to clarify that gambling is a losing proposition?
-
What? You got Lucifer to show?
He has his own show now.
-
What? You got Lucifer to show?
nah, he just lost his rent money like a stupid sucker, and is pissed at the world.
-
Who cares about a hearty handshake when the odds are against you and they know it. Negative expected value of peace.
-
Great post with some interesting history as well.
I have zero interest in gambling or drinking booze, etc.
Thus, any casino holds little interest for me or my wife.
I'd enjoy some of the Vegas shows, but we rarely go to any night clubs.
My impression is that Vegas has become over crowded and lost it's appeal .
I've heard that the Vegas atmosphere is closer to some adult form of spring break.
My wife and I will be heading to the FL Keys next month and the Canadian Rockies in the summer for our trips.
-
RITCH, Great idea but if that balloon is tied to a tree that is growing on MGM property, you are gonna have to pay a "tie-up" fee and a rising and lowering fee ... among other fees that will soon be thought of by those MGM dudes.
HOWARD ... Florida Keys!!! Great idea and you are going to love it. Look for my footprints on Pirate's Cove Beach. And I gotta assume that your Canadian Rockies trip includes the train ride.
Yea, Las Vegas is too damn big and on the weekends it's too damn crowded. I first arrived when it was still a wild west town with about five legit casinos on the Strip with a short fat guy similar to the Guy's and Dolls motion picture characters would meet and greet you at the front door and buy you and anyone with a short military haircut the first few rounds of drinks and send the ladies to keep you company.
And every weekend there was a new dead body in a desert hole just a short walk from the casino's backside entrance. And that dead body did not die by chocking on a chicken bone as these front door guys used to claim with an elbow nudge in your ribs.
DR. J, The Nugget..... best downtown hotel and casino, but too bad that the shark tank pool may not be open due to the LV cold season through March. When it is open the kids and most grown-ups love the class slide through that shark tank pool.
You might also enjoy the ZIP Line that runs above Fremont St. And you won't be missing much but LV A-Bomb history ... but braven up a bit and head about 4-6 blocks east from your hotel down Fremont Street and have a drink or two in the ATOMIC BAR and see what that place is all about.
But check first. They may have torn it down yesterday like everything else on that side of town.
Other than that .... all is well.
-

Yes. The list includes Mandalay Bay, Delano, Luxor, Excalibur, Monte Carlo, New York-New York, Vdara, Aria, Bellagio, MGM Grand and (bb related) The Mirage. Hopefully this will fail miserably and other big names on the strip will not follow suit and do the same after a few months.
-
Interesting read but I will still go. Vegas is still a special place to me, I actually had a dream about it recently and have a hankerin to go. I haven't had a real vacation in years.
Sad that those things changed but I still can enjoy myself there for very little money. It's not just Vegas, like what wes said, the whole world has gone to shit.
-

If you continue to practice the incorrect use of apostrophes, Fortress is going to kick the shit out of you.

Good for you! My impression is , that Vegas is one of the few adult playgrounds left to go on vacation.
Cruises have become such "family and kid friendly" vacations, we won't go on 'em any longer.
-
Nobody goes there anymore.
It's too crowded

;D ;D ;D

I will be there in two weeks for a few days with a woman....anybody got any nice things to do or see?....Any nice places for drinks or nice restaurants?..I'll be staying at the stratosphere
-
HOWARD, The only shipboard cruise I ever took as a civilian was the one where the propeller fell off midway through the cruise. That was fun.
I had way too many 'rides' on US Navy ships of destruction and air craft carriers but the most 'funnest' occurred off the coast of Russia opposite Vladaglaskopf (spelling??) when the ship's captain swore that we were in one of the roughest seas in Naval history.
I don't get sea sick and was too damm dumb to believe that this ship could be turned upside down, but we had to batten down for a day or two and there were only two of us in the galley those couple of days ... me and the captain plus the poor sick navy mess guys who had to wait on us morning, noon, and night.
I'd tell ya more, but then I'd have to kill ya!
Unless you're cleared for "scuttlebutt'.
-
This is nothing new. Nothing ever stays the same and the "oldguys" always talk up how great the old days where. Who gives a shit. Vegas is now what it was always to become. Still a fun and cheap place to go for a quick shot of thrills.
-

Guess the race.

Not trying to put him down but if he is wise he will change his hotel reservation. If money is an issue I would recommend Excalibur as a cheap but decent option.

Indeed.
But I've improved! Still wondering where the hell I picked up that bad habbit...

I am currently reading The Professor, the Banker and the Suicide King and it goes into how poker evolved in Vegas. Firstly, it was completely crooked before the 80s. Secondly, it took massive persuasion to make Steve Wynn (yeah, the billionaire) open poker rooms in the Bellagio and Mirage as they seemed less profitable than the idiots (you) doing craps and slots. The poker players would gamble after though... and bring other gamblers.
Anyway, why are you moaning about a business milking every penny of profit it can? Go elsewhere if you don't like it. Do you go to the supermarket and expect a free loaf of bread and some milk? All they want is your money, now they have the profile (from TV poker) they don't need to hand out shitty rolls of coins (lol if you think that is special treatment in a casino). They were slow to accommodate people dropping millions on poker, why would they care about some nobody who cries over losing a few dollars as a comp?

ANDRAIS.... There are not too many GetBiggers who know LV better than I do.
There are 132 licensed casinos in this town and I've been to each and every one of them at one time or another.
Plus over the years I've met a few of the 'boyz' whom even ONLY ME feared to congregate with and I still communicate with one of the younger originals who was somewhat important back in them good old days.
I would never recommend the Strat nowadays but BOB Stupak (God Bless his soul) was a semi-original,founder of this town, who owned Vegas World before it was demolished to become the Stratosphere.
And he invited me to become an original investor in the tower while he had complete control. (And that's a long story for another tday).
Let me know what you and your lady like to do .... and I'll make some suggestions.
While you are in the Strat, make sure you go to the top for the best damn view of the Las Vegas valley..... especially at night when it's all lit up.
I never had a meal at the top, but I hear it's a great place with one of the best views in the city to fine dine during important occasions.
And you may be interested in the thrill rides while you are up there. The best of the lot is the short roller coaster ride off the side of the tower which terminates with something most riders never expected.
And if you feel like jumping over the side, you can do that too .... providing the weather conditions are appropriate.
Let me know how long you will be here and what things you ike to do, and I'll offer some suggestions.
-
Offer some suggestions please.

I loved when the big baller goes to vegas and spends 5,000 at a pool party and the watier screams bloody murder when he leaves like $200 tip.

Haha..
No shit you are staying there, you cheap fuck.
she actually made the reservations..LOL..I just went along with the whole thing so I could get laid ;D

Brutal planning a trip out of state just so some worthless whore will let you slide inside of her.
Unbelievably typical.

I'm not even old but I can remember when you went to Vegas to PARTY. Now it's a bunch of losers on their smart phones.

Any mafia stories ?

The town will never be the same. After the Tangiers, the big corporations took it all over. Today it looks like Disneyland. And while the kids play cardboard pirates, Mommy and Daddy drop the house payments and Junior's college money on the poker slots. In the old days, dealers knew your name, what you drank, what you played. Today, it's like checkin' into an airport. And if you order room service, you're lucky if you get it by Thursday. Today, it's all gone. You get a whale show up with four million in a suitcase, and some twenty-five-year-old hotel school kid is gonna want his Social Security Number. After the Teamsters got knocked out of the box, the corporations tore down practically every one of the old casinos. And where did the money come from to rebuild the pyramids? Junk bonds. But in the end, I wound up right back where I started. I could still pick winners, and I could still make money for all kinds of people back home. And why mess up a good thing?
-
I'LL BE DOING MY BEST TO RESPOND TO SOME OF YOU GETBIGGERS, but it's gonna be a busy day .... so this is one of my shortest comments ....
As most of you GetBiggers already know, some of the best nightclubs in the US of A are located here in Las Vegas.
And due to their popularity, they are somewhat expensive to get through the front door ($40 for most of them) and once you get inside tie individual drinks are $10+ with bottle service starting around $600.
For a thousand or more you can have a great bottle of champagne delivered by a drone and have it spray over everyone in the pool.
I can't do anything about the price of drinks, nor can I get a better price on that drone nor on that Champaigne ...
BUT, on most occasions I can get you on the LIST ......
The LIST gets you in the front door for FREE during most evenings before 10 PM.
Most clubs start jumpen at 11 PM, so you'll have an hour or so to check the place out and meet and greet he other LIST personnel.
If anyone is interested, let me know.
-
You should get your facts straight. MGM is Spending $37 million to renovate their parking structures. That $10 a day will help recoup that back. I doubt bunion spent $37 million building his casino alone.
-
Prices for light frottage in room 7 by the ice machine have also gone up :(
-
Andre. Don't stay at the Strat. It's well past its prime and is rundown and dirty. It's in the worst strip location. Nowhere to walk to once outside. They're building that World casino next door that is a couple years off. Stay closer to the middle of the strip near Caesars. Closer to walk to things and better activity.
-
Stratosphere is a dump.
Yes but it is a popular casino for Hebrews. I'm not being racist. It just is.
-
Vegas peaked in the mid 1950s

I agree with this. Either there or if money is an issue stay at excalibur,
Mgm, treasure island, or Tropicana

Have only been to Vegas two or three times ( I'm not a gambler) and I generally rate places based on food. If you are similar, Ceasar's has this amazing thing called a bacchanalian buffet. One of the best buffets I've ever eaten at. Everything was higher end. My homies kept saying Bally's has an even better buffet, but I missed it because I left on a Saturday morning and apparently it's only available on Sundays.

Considering most getbiggers can't afford a bus trip to the mall, I applaud his Vegas vacation plans.

Not a worthless whore, or else I wouldn't even bother with the trip and would just bang her in my bedroom......I have some feelings for her because we were going to get married at one point (when I was having an affair with her 5 yrs ago when things went bad between me and my ex wife)..... ;D...just glad to be getting a second chance with her, thus my weakness in letting her plan the trip

Thank God no one has to worry about all those extra fees and rip offs now that the Olympia is held at a dump instead of the Mandalay Bay. ::)

I went to the Olympia in 2001 when it was still at the Mandalay..it was amazing and first class all the way.......how is the Orleans?..anyone ever been there>?

Um from what I gauged from the casino and arena it has seen better days. I would not have stayed there because We are used to better accommodations and we wanted to be closer to the strip. Super easy to get to though if you're there for the Olympia. My friends stayed there though because of convenience and they said they wouldn't do it otherwise

John Hansen said he competed in a Truck Stop banquet room when he won the "Natural Olympia".
LOL, the Olympia had a classy venue but opted for the "Howard effect*". * let's get this to suck

Haven't been there in years and have no interest now.

SQUID, Sorry to disappoint ya but even the ORLEANS charges a resort fee.
To any GetBigger who plans on coming to Las Vegas, let me know if you'd be interested in getting on one of these high end night club lists .... and I'll put you in direct contact with the List Maker.
Actually if you are into this DJ craze, it's one of the best deals in town at some of the finest nightclubs in the USA.
I personally don't understand the popularity of this DJ stuff, but DJs are among the highest paid 'artists' in Las Vegas today.
I'm more into how it's produced and have to admit that the lighting effects are somewhat spectacular.
It sort of threw me back into the spaceship landing sequence in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, but the 'aliens' this time out go crazy and in tune with the sound of the 'music' or the 'record scratching' by some modern day 'maistro'.

You're absolutely right Stunt!
I used to enjoy flying over to Vegas to do a weekend with buddies and hit the blackjack and Poker tables. Today, I feel as if its lost its allure.
I'm just waiting for New York to legalize online gambling at some point in order to play some poker online.

I don't gamble as it's not even close to be a "gamble". I'm gonna lose, dammit! ;D
I only went for the buffets. Yup. Plenty of NAGEs out there now for that so unless I feel like a road trip I wouldn't go.
