Football players are athletes and they need oxygen on the sidelines too....
-
Markus Ruhl is not athletic, this I am pretty confident of.
Shawn probably was. Kevin Levrone could run pretty fast (could you imagine him chasing you down on cycle?). Some other bodybuilders have also proven to be quite athletic.
But you do not NEED to be athletic to be a bodybuilder any more than you NEED to be strong. Sometimes they go together, other times they do not.
So in general, I would say no, bodybuilders are not athletes. Exceptions do exist of course, as listed above.

True, but they actually run!

comparing physiques is not a sport
training for shows is hard
as are most of the men in the audience
do u see where im going with this?

Is that Toni Dee?

Yes, but just because 'an athlete' uses oxygen, does not mean they are not an athlete....(which seems to be the point of your thread ???)

My guess is he's using the oxygen because he either just got done with a 3 minute posing routein or a 3-5min posedown. My point? Oxygen after posing? Thats pathetic.

How many sports/(whatever you call bodybuilding) are there where athletes are at around 2-3% bodyfat and missing many essential nutrients/water....and are then asked to do some sort of an activity?....fatigue is only natural....

Wrestling!
But my point is that they call themselves "athletes" when their not!
Yup....lots of heavyweights at 300 pounds....like Ronnie at 2-3% bodyfat.... ::)
In addition, wrestlers have time to eat (after they weigh in), and load up on water and carbs before they wrestle. Bodybuilders cannot do this.....

Tommi Torvildsen did backflips on shows.
By the way this is a REAL athlete

I'd love to see any football player get down to 2% bodyfat, go on diuretics for a week, then cut their water out, then run down the field just once..

Point is??

i agree with slyy... i think it's more of an issue of nutrition or lack thereof than athleticism.
-
oh boy, I just love these guys that can't make it in bodybuilding then knock it.. lol my point mr. I'm on a bodybuilding board, but diss bodybuilders, is that any athlete would need some oxygen if they got their body to that stage..
-
bottom line.....bodybuilders are pussies!

i heard bob paris could "reverse cowgirl" a 300 pound man for over an hour. no thats atheletic! :o

Agreed. But they are athletic performers. You can't be COMPLETELY unathletic if you have a 500+ lbs bench and can do 30 sets-as some pros do-in a less than one hour workout. Despite having more toxic poisons coarsing through their blood than there is in the Mississippi River, pro bodybuilders are still strong enough to easily kill the average man with their bare hands and have enough endurance to kill the average man by giving him a heart attack, if they were to compete in an endurance contest. 'Nough said...

I tell you from that video. If you asked 1000 people on the street if you would rather look like Ronnie Coleman Mr Olympia the best body in the world or be able to do what that kid does I guarantee you 950+ people would pick that kid. That was awesome. That kid has a future if he moved to LA.

bottom line.....bodybuilders are pussies!
Say that real loud at a bodybuilding show..
-
I do kids bootcamp 3 times a week , and I do sprints with them, run drills...and core training with them.
I can keep up with any 19 yr old, and i'm 39.
I play fast pitch BASEBALL for 6 weeks every summer, and flag football from Dec to the middle of Feb.
I think if you keep at it, you dont loose it...some guys just lift and are scared to do anything else.

Damn, nice mammaries on that blonde slut! I'd love to feel them or atleast see them in their full glory!

Wrestling!
But my point is that they call themselves "athletes" when their not!
It is hard to imagine anyone more nutrient/water deprived than a high school/college wrestler who has been cut'n weight....and even though they can eat and drink after they weigh in,it still takes awhile to be rehydrated completely.Same goes for the nutrition. And if they do gorge on food and water after a long fast, and then try to wrestle,it often leads to vomiting. I think that weight training is an athletic activity, but Bodybuilding is not a sport. To be a sport there needs to be a clear cut way of scoring points or acomplishing a task that is measurable.(FOR LACK OF A BETTER TERM)Bodybuilding is just judged on the opinions of the judging panel.
BUT....now that I think about it...so ARE sports such as DIVING, ??? :-\... :-X iduno

If you think Ronnie Coleman is not an athlete then go through a leg workout with him. Flex Wheeler is highly trained in martial arts. Try racing Kevin Levrone...even when he did weigh 260. The bodybuilding "show" is not neccessarilly the "athletic" part of the sport...its the time leading up to it. The hard work is done leading up to the show...not on stage. I've worked out with plenty of "athletes" football players, fighters (MMA), etc.... who couldn't stop throwing up long enough to complain when going through one of my workouts. The only people I know that work as hard as bodybuilders are fighters, and even they don't have to go through the agony of strict dieting (although there training is just as hard if not harder). I played football, and baseball in school. I know about running sprints in 103' degree heat in the middle of August and throwing up in your helmet before you can get it off. I was also involved with competitive rock climbing for a number of years (like you would see in the xgames) and have been alpine climbing (extreme environments)I train with guys doing Mixed Martial Arts etc...nothing I have ever done is as challenging as bodybuilding.

Like I said. There are alot of bodybuilders that WERE athletes. You bring up Flex and his martial arts, he had to drop about 40lbs of muscle (and kidney surgery) and then recondition and retrain himself, you don't do that using bodybuilding methods. As for Kevin Levrone, just because he ran a race (BTW he called out a record holder how retarded was that?) and got blown away doesn't make him an athlete. Can they change their training methods, drop muscle and train for athletics...yes. But being 300lbs at 5'10 and taking oxygen after posing is rediculous!
-
I'm with you on this one, Intense.
-
Hey Mr Intenseone, have you ever stepped on stage? Yeah, posing can get pretty fucking tiring.....

I could even agree with the statement "bodybuilding is not a sport" but to say that "bodybuilders are not athletes"...I am assuming that you have never done what it takes to build a winning physique. If you have then post a pic and prove me wrong...I used to say that Nascar guys did nothing but make left turns at high speeds...how hard can it be...then my wife bought me a package to Texas Motor Speedway to take a class and actually race a car at 160mph for my birthday...that shit is sooo much harder than it looks. You can't really diss something from the sidelines....

Intense looks in pretty good shape, compared to a lot of the pics posted here.
That being said, I disagree with him. The athletic part is the training and diet that lead up to body improvement and shows.
As far as the O2 goes. Anyone dehydrated and carb depleted to that extent probably needs some.

I was thinking about it sometime this year but then I came to my senses. Why spend thousands on getting ready for shows to get no return. Beside's the industry has changed alot and the thought of waring posing trunks and putting on oil doesn't appeal to me!

This question has popped up her at least 100 times in the last year. Bodybuilding is a sport. The shows are a pageant, like a Miss America. It takes an athlete to get ready for a show. To the naysayers, just train with a competitive bodybuilder getting ready for a show and tell me the guy isn't an athlete. never mind the diet, supplements and cardio. Just weight train with one, if you can. You don't just put on a pair of trunks and oil yourself up. it takes years to develop a championship physic and weeks upon weeks to train yourself to be contest ready. Than talk.

You don't want to rehydrate before a show but you can eat. You especially want to if you come into the weigh in looking flat.

Duhhhhhhh, he's being tested for his VO2 uptake! That apparatus measures how much oxygen his body is using.
Did you just find that pic on the net and think he was hooked up to an oxygen tank??
-
Marathon runners? ::)
The marathon runners I know typically eat what they want, because they don't gain weight based on how much they run. They can also eat a solid nutritional breakfast the day of a marathon. They drink plenty of fluids and electrolites before and during their run....
And of course, that is a big difference in comparison to what bodybuilder have in their bodies the day of a show....

The problem with that is that anyone can lift weights, but not everyone can catch a ball on the run while being chased by a 250lb tackle or hit a baseball at 95mph. Just some examples!

That is true.
However, a bodybuilder who does cardio is probably healthier than the majority of the population.
I say "probably" due to the fact that when you factor in the diuretics and other pre-contest drugs it probably equals out.

Sounds like bodubuilding qualifies.
Players in all sports, be definition, are athletes. I think that's where he was headed with his reply.

Out-fight??? Are you implying that just because a bodybuilder is big and strong that they can handle themselves in a fight? Since when did the ability to take steroids and lift a weight translate into proficiency in self defense?
Here's a great idea. Let's starting integrating IFBB bodybuilders into UFC fights and see how well they hold up.

Bodybuilding aint a sport because it requires no athletic skill to go up on stage and pose. I dont mean this in a negative way, yes bodybuilders work hard and posing is quite the skill(not that posing wins u contest these days anyway), but it is wrong to say that bodybuilding is a sport.

As much as I hate to admit it, it's not a sport, but it is physical. I think thats where the division is because it takes more physical attempts to do the work, however being a ditch digger or construction worker is also physical work and I can't say they are "athletes". But there are a lot of athletes that do bodybuilding.
