If bob comes in hsi 2002 NOC 2nd place he has a very good chance of beating those guys but so far he has not been able to get into that kind of shape

That's like asking a boxer how he can possibly predict his own win before a fight.  When you're facing a challenge, you simply do *NOT* allow for thoughts of defeat.
