Title: Thoughts on Zodiac Signs as Related to Personality Types
Post by: Al Doggity on January 27, 2016, 05:22:18 PM
Sure, it's bullshit, but sometimes the generalizations are suspiciously accurate.

I am a Virgo. Most people say that we are thoroughly dependable, detail-oriented, neat  and typically even-tempered though somewhat intractable. Several women have told me that Virgo men are the most attractive by Zodiac sign.

In my experience, Scorpions have magnetic personalities but tend to be untrustworthy. The majority of male Scorpios I've been friends with have been traditional "players": never had trouble lining up women, never had trouble convincing them to come back, frequently cheating on them.

Pisces are huge day-dreamers, typically cool people, extremely unmotivated. I have known so many Pisces who were smart, funny, had great ideas but zero follow-through. My doorman is a Pisces and he's a smart, funny, college educated guy, but almost everyone who comes to visit us comments on how flaky he seems when they first meet him.

Virgo: "Ideas which seem promising at the time may bear no fruit.  Inauspicious day for use of the new topic button.  Lurking more pays strong dividends."

All shit.

Generalizations can pretty much be applied to anyone.

There is 0 evidence for astrology/zodiac signs.

There's 0 evidence for zodiac signs?  Because the title of this thread was "Let's debate the scientific merits of astrology"  ??? Because posters on this board so rarely discuss opinions based on generalizations and usually only  bother to post something after their ideas have undergone rigorous scientific analyses?  ::)

Im really only for ideas that have undergone rigorous scientific analyses.

Personally, I don't see how there is anything to discuss. Zodiac signs do not prove anything. What can we discuss about them?  ??? ??? ???

Okay, Ill go. My birthday is May and I am a Gemini. WOOHOO!!! Now what?  ??? ???

If you don't think a topic is worth of discussion that is fine, but you weren't required to post in the thread at all. For you to act like the topic is not only beneath your personal standards but somehow abhorrent to what is typically posted and discussed on this board is ridiculous.

Every woman I've talked to in the last 3 years is hyper conscious of zodiac signs. Odd phenomenon, but I enjoy fortune cookie predictions so....

The opening post was really more about astrological signs as they relate to personality types, not so much about luck, but epic google image searching to prove an imaginary point.

The most interesting thing about the concept of astrology that is often ignored: If the heavenly bodies determine our course of action and destiny, what influence do our collective destinies have on said bodies? I am gonna assume astroMagiEnergy or whatever follows basic field theory guidelines and interacts with the source through near field activity (electromagnetism, gravity?). What course of action would spell the celestial equivalent of a mercury retrograde for the nearby stars? If we can't move the stars, they cant move us. Simple.

What the thinker thinks, the prover proves (Robert Anton Wilson)
That said, there SHOULD be an overwhelming majority of Aries winning the Olympia if there's anything to the zodiac archetypes. Maybe there is, I don't care enough to search. I think (jungian) MBTI tests have actual substance , does anyone ever ask a chick in a bar if they are an ENTP though? I doubt it...

Sure, trust the horoscope and doubt the bible. Makes total sense that every single person born in the same month has the exact same traits. You fucking moron.

I sometimes find it odd that religion is often discussed and scrutinized yet astrology and other such practices seem to get a free pass.
The "personality traits" of the various signs are just human traits which everybody has, regardless of what month they happen to be born in.

But don't the moon and the sun have a direct affect on the tides of the ocean? What affect does the ocean have on those heavenly bodies?

It's interesting that you should bring up those two points. When you consider the existence of circadian rhythms, the effect of sunlight on our behavior, animals' time/cycle-based instinctual habits,  the idea that people born within certain yearly ranges have unique outlooks on life, etc, it's not really that crazy THAT being born within a certain timeframe could have a general affect on one's personality.

In conjunction with the opening post, I feel like it's almost impossible to confuse the intention. Even on it's own, I feel like women will ask your zodiac sign, more often than not, to get a gauge on your personality rather than to predict your future. However, I might be wrong and maybe the title was confusing, so I changed it for clarity.

Exactly. At any point in time, each one of these traits could apply to me. Some days more than others. The only thing that matters is the context. And in specific contexts, some of these traits are amplified, and some of these traits are inhibited. When the context changes, a new set of traits may be elicited to a degree. On the other hand, an individual often has a subset of personality traits that define him or her. Take the trait "emotion" (under cancer). What the hell does that even mean? I've never met one person who was not an emotional being. Further, I know people who have different signs, who express all different types of emotions, and who happen to be emotional people. Another one is "appreciation." Zodiac signs are way too general to mean anything. Further, the issue becomes when it doesn't apply to someone. I love when you tell astrology that X traits do not apply to me. Then what? Do zodiac signs only apply to some people, and not others?  ??? ???
