I don't understand how we correct/help mentally ill people like this. In cases like this immediate death seems to be the only just option....

Great point. Legalizing when life starts justifies murder.

Back on point though she lit an infant of fire and let it burn to death, it wasn't like she took a gun and put the baby away mercifully. Death by fire is a little cruel.
