Diners upset Joe's Crab Shack decor features photo of 1895 hanging

The Minneapolis NAACP has demanded an apology from Joe's Crab Shack after two African-American diners discovered their table at a Roseville location was decorated with an image from an 1895 hanging in Texas.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the diners were waiting for their meals Wednesday when they noticed a historical image embedded in their table depicted a hanging with a cartoon bubble above the hanged man's head that reads, "All I said was 'I don't like the gumbo!'"
The two determined the image was a real photo from an 1895 hanging of a black man in Texas. The NAACP said the diners discovered the image depicted the hanging of a man named Richard Burleson in Groesbeck, Texas.

i actually side with the naacp on this. thats pretty fucked up actually. imagine if that was someone in your family on that pic being hung

If the diner/restaurant was dedicated to historical pictures and artifacts, and had this hung up as a reminder of the past, then I am fine with that.
But messed up to make light of the picture with the caption, "All I said was 'I don't like the gumbo!'"
-
Couldn't they have just found a picture of a white man being hanged so no one would give a shit?
-
Guaranteed that whomever was in charge of decorating the restaurant had no idea this was there.

Your obvious trolling is really becoming retarded.
-
Maybe we can be offended that in 1895 they took pictures of hangings because it was a social event.

How is it trolling?
I do not agree with making light of this picture. There is nothing funny about it.
-
That's fd up n someone's getting fired. Black or white guy that's a very poor decision to put that in a restaurant.
-
This is an outrage. The person of color dindu nuffin. He was a good boy, gettin ready foe college. They hung him foe nuttin. ???
On May 3, 1894, a pioneer resident of Groesbeck, James Garrett McKinnon, was robbed and bludgeoned to death with a stone. A man was arrested for the death, tried and convicted. The sentence was hanging. Prior to 1903, death penalties were performed in the county seats of the respective counties. After that date, the State of Texas carried out all executions at the Huntsville Penitentiary.
On April 12, 1895, at Groesbeck, Texas, Limestone County, Richard Burleson was hanged for the crime for which he had been convicted.

The photo is referenced and dated at the bottom. It's an odd choice but if they other tables are covered in the same way with historical photos it's not something to get worked up over, as it was a part of American history (again I don't think the photo was a race related hate crime from the era, although it could be). But it would be no different than having the photo be of an indian reservation.
I wonder how long that table has been in the restaurant, I'd also imagine it's not a custom piece that it's likely produced in bulk.

America white washing history. Blacks love to complain about slavery but they don't want to see it ::)

I think it was more about the joke. Did you see the caption?
You can display history, without making a mockery out of it.

As much as we live in a PC nation, I'm going to go ahead and agree with the detractors of the photo.
I was in a Mexican restaurant once and they had a painting of cock-fighting. To me, sure I understand it is part of a culture BUT it does not mean it is in any way agreeable or should be lauded in any way. I mean, these were people forcing animals to fight or kill each other. People killing people is right up there with shit you don't need to make light of.

No intent to avoid the seriousness of this topic, but those stone crabs at Joe's are lacking in the tasting department.
The Dungenesse crabs served at the wharf in San Francisco are worth their weight in gold and they are charging accordingly at $26+ per Crab Loui.
What happened to the huge $6.00 ones I used to buy?!!!

Joes is all frozen. Quick note about 10 years ago a Joe's Crab Shack opened near where I live and a lot of the local bartenders went to work there and the place quickly became a hot spot. I stopped in after the place had been open a few months to see a bartender friend of mine and not wanting to miss my anabolic window started to order a steam pot and got the quick finger across the neck sign while shaking his head no signaling me to not order any food from this place. He tells me later that everything they have is frozen and the fuckers in the kitchen are the worst, least sanitary bunch of douches he's ever met and this guy has been a bartender for years at some notoriously fucked places. It was a popular drinking spot for about 6 months then all the bartenders moved to the next new place to open and the crowd followed.
