Just stay away from gimmick joints that cater to men or have hot chicks working their. They essentially charge you a shitload for a supercuts type hair style. Go into a good barber shop, you'll probably see 3 hair cutters, maybe 4. Explain to them all exactly what you want and who knows how to do it best. Chances are you won't be forced into the empty chair but have to wait for someone to finish with a customer.

The ladies at Great Clips cut my hair once a month.

Before that an old man named Carl used to cut it at a barber shop. When finished the old black man shining shoes would give me a balloon.
