Title: shoulder injury- cortizone shot
Post by: judochoke on March 18, 2016, 12:19:50 PM
somehow i injured my shoulder about 4 months ago. i went from inclining pressing 315 for sets of 6 with no spot, to not even being able to do the empty bar. it hurt so bad, especially at night. and of course i had just started a new HMO, with a brand new doctor.
so after three months of rest, anti inflammatory, X-rays, pain pills, i finally got a cortisone shot into my shoulder. i watched her mix some pain medicine and the milky white cortisone medicine into a shot, and she injected it into my shoulder. its been almost two weeks,
and the shoulder is pain free. that shit works. i know some people say cortisone can float inside the body forever, you never get rid of it. i don't care. I'm back to benching again, going very easy. but the shoulder pain is gone, range of motion is back.

i had a cortisone shot in my knee a few years ago, and my knee still is good. so for me, I'm two for two on these shots ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

They are great the first time, but you get diminishing returns over time.  And, if you return to the same behaviors, the injuries return, and surgery becomes the next option.

so i have heard. the knee shot was about 6 years ago, and i stopped all running for good. knee is still holding up. i plan to take it very slowly for the rest of the year. only going to 225 on the bench, with lots of warmups. hopefully i will not reinsure my self again.
i did the injury trying to get up the 100 pound dumbbells for seated shoulder presses. never again will i do those again.

stay away from the heavier weights. Cortisone is known to weaken tendons

strengthen your shoulder with wooden indian clubs...forget about benching for a while or you will get reinjured

Only temporary relief.  The cortisone itself breaks down tendons and ligaments.  The pain will return and you'll probably need surgery.

thanks for the good news about temporary relief. now I'm sad again.

Limited cortisone can work amazing for some things.  It does weaken tendons and ligaments so use caution until time passes.  Had plantar factitious. One extremely painful shot of cortisone "cured" it.  I also had nerve damage in one of my feet called morton's neuroma. Pain was excruciating. Doctor used 4 shots with a big needle through the top of my foot and the needle one time came through the bottom of my foot by accident. Thought I was going pass out.  It didn't work as well as the plantar shot.  It took about 5 months for the nerve pain to die out.

I heard on joe rogan podcast that a stem cell shot is pretty good too.
Probably not covered by an HMO

Good on ya!

What was the diagnosis? Pull, tear, impingement...?

I've had the exact same problem for many years ,rear delt.when doing any presses.I've thought about cortisone but the pain is the signal that something is wrong if I cover it up I'm making it worse.if I was getting ready for a show and had to train all out then Maybe, but I can get 90% progress as is.I just don't want to make it worse .im50 yrs.old and hope to go for a long time still.I'm just saying don't hurt yourself more, you'll wish you hadn't later.

My guess is that you're already fucking it up again by planning on benching, no matter what the weight. Its time to de-emphasize the poundages and start working on form and shoulder friendly exercises or you're just going to be right back in the same place in a year and that time the relief from the shot will last about 1/2 as long.

Cortizone shots are a temporary pain relief treatment.  They are not magically making whatever is wrong with your shoulder better.

I suspect the doctor probably told you this.

This is like when (dumb) people hear their favorite athlete has an injury but he's getting an "MRI" and are like "oh good he'll be better after that."

listen i went to a Doctor who did an X-Ray on my neck and said itīs ok and sent me to a Guy who was a chiropractor. I suffered pain after it and got a scan and Bingo it showed the problem. An MRI shows much more and is more efficient.

The rotator cuff tear is probably still there.

It doesn't mask the pain signal but it takes out the inflammation. It can be the last resort for some but when it works it's like a miracle. If you can stop the swelling (inflammation) that could be an actual cure for some.

I hear the latest injection is a alcohol based one that is masking the pain by numbing the nerve. I wouldn't do that but then again pain is a great motivator.

lol. enjoy it before it becomes impossible. once the shoulder goes, its gone.

avoid everything you did prior, if you want to train chest and shoulders properly in the future.

even after surgery its never the same.

definitely do not bench.

....my prediction is that youll ignore this and do it anyway.....it would be interesting to hear your progress in about a year's time.

im yet to meet anyone who has come back fully.

Yes it fights the inflammation. I had a series of injections in the right side of my neck and in the rear. I never had to take anymore pain killers like the opium they gave me. It Helped me big time.

Good advice ...drop the Benches find another exercise. Avoid surgery unless you canīt.

did some chest today. shoulder felt great. slight pain until i warmed up really good. ended up doing incline presses with a 70 pound dumbbell for ten reps, two sets. shoulder felt fine.
going to go nice and easy for a long time. 4 months of pain was not good. going to lift smarter now, supersets, 60 seconds rest between sets, warm clothing.

fuck it. get busy living or get busy dying.

Been around the game a long time and many of the huge bench press guys from back in the day can't bench anything now with all the destruction the lift caused. I believe the lift is really bad for the shoulder/pec joint. Know one guy that ripped off his tricep too.  I believe the lift really shortens the range of motion of the joint setting up tightness that is prone to ripping. The lift hasn't been around that long in the history of lifting. I watch big fat guys with big barrel chests taking an extreme arch with a wide grip barely moving the bar around 12".  How is that contributing to increased athletic attributes in any way?

Judo if you use 315lbs for sets of inclines you are crazy strong in pressing but don't let your ego destroy your body.

agree bench press is not the best pec exercise.

Cortisone never did shit for my bung shoulder.

It worked like a miracle for one of my problems and nothing for another.

I'm going to be cool for the rest of the year. only 225 on the bench, sets of 6. I'm not going to fuck this up. not benching for 4 months really fucked me up, as i have always been a big bencher.
luckly, doing incline dumbbell presses haven't been bad on the shoulder. so not going to go over 80 or 90s for reps. take it nice and easy.

I had a strained rotator cuff from a college football injury two shots of cortizone and i was 100 percent in a wk.and that was ten years ago, and still have a healthy pain free shoulder

If the problem is just chronic inflammation, like some nasty tendonitis, then corticosteroids are a lifesaver. If there's real damage (tear, etc), then cortisone just makes it feel better and you'll go back to being stupid and make it worse.
