Title: High Voices
Post by: Al Doggity on March 21, 2016, 10:39:55 AM
Has anyone else noticed men's voices in daily life seeming to get higher and higher?

I have a deep voice and from  late high school through college, I remember most of my friends sounding almost identical to me, to the point that it was difficult to distinguish between us over the phone. I remember during my junior year in college, a group of four or five of guys having a low conversation during class and our professor reprimanding us because our voices were too deep to whisper and it was more of a distraction than when a group of ladies whispered.

Maybe it's just because I'm looking for it now, but it seems like an unusual number of men have abnormally high voices now.

Anybody else noticed this? Just my 'magination?

When I wake up and go to bed I'm a bass for a few hours.  By midday I'm a tenor and that's basically where I live.

I haven't noticed men's voices getting higher, but I have noticed in general men are more effeminate.

My girlfriend commented about something similar a month ago.  We were watching Jimmy Fallon and Ryan Reynolds was a guest.  She commented that Reynolds had a boyish sounding voice, and if he had a deeper voice he would be much hotter.

does testosterone really have an affect on the voice?

ronnie coleman and mike tyson don't exactly have masculine voice, they didn't lack testosterone

Before electronics, public speakers desired higher voices because it carried better.

General Patton was uncomfortable when he heard his voice played back.  (many people feel this way).

You can train your voice to emphasis the lower end.  Clark Gable and Rock Hudson did this.

No. Length of vocal chords is the determining factor.

No. Length of vocal chords is the determining factor.

Also the mass of the vocal cords, which is influenced by test (it is muscles that make the sounds in your throat)...Other factors play in too, like the size and shape of your sinuses...whether or not you have chronic drainage down your throat...Nat King Cole actually said that cigarette smoking gave him the voice he is known for.
