There was a time in the late 1980s when almost everyone had a bra on their car. Remember? Most of them were made of leather (or imitation leather) and they were put on virtually every model of car you can imagine: Corvette, Camero, Trans Am, Accord, Carolla, Escort, Celica, etc. After a time, vendors started to offer them in clear plastic and other weird materials, designs, etc. Ostensibly the purpose of the bra was to protect your car’s front finish against nicks and cuts from road debris, but looking back it seems like nothing more than a mindless gimmick/trend concocted to separate you from your $$. One almost never sees them anymore. I realized that this morning when I saw one… on the highway and it was such an anachronism. Did you ever have a bra on your car? Did your friends? What were you thinking?
-
The best was when people took them off and the car had bad tan lines. You'd see the faded damage the sun did to the rest of your car.

ha ha ha Self owning at its worst! :-X
If you want to protect your car, keep it in a garage.

or worse on white car they yellowed..
-
They still sell them now but as a clear film. When I bought my new car they tried to sell me the front wrap. I told them no.

Or just wrap it.

I still see people that use car covers during the day. every morning I see the same guy at work spend about 10 minutes covering his older BMW. It is an average car at best but he covers it anytime it's parked at work.
-
It amazes me to think of how popular they were. From the Corvette to the Yugo, it was easily on 60%+ of cars on the road for a while. Someone, somewhere, got very rich hawking those stupid bras. They remind me of another 80's phenomenon: the Club. Again, someone got very rich selling that too... until one of those news magazines did a story on it and showed how easy it was defeat it: just saw the steering wheel and club came right off. ::)

Do you remember louvers? Why not put plantation blinds on a car?

Yes! Another trend designed to empty your walled that totally faded. It was never as popular as the bra but lots of people thought this was "cool" at one time. If you are a high school kid it makes sense that you were stupid enough to go this route, but why would any adult do this? ::)

I will admit to having one.
I had a new car, but lived in a condo in the city, so I only had access to street parking. Front end got a scratch the first friggin' day, so on went the leather.
Threw it out a year later.
-
I bought one for my '99 Hyundai Tiburon. It had some rust on the hood and would have needed a new one. The bra was cheaper. :-\

Completely redundant unless you're commuting 300km on a gravel road.

HAHAHAHAH exactly
-
Part of what made the bra so stupid was that it started out as an offering for mid to higher end cars... but cheap car owners didn't want to be left out so they kept making them for cheaper and cheaper models. I was only in high school at the time, but when I started seeing bras on cars like the Ford Escort or the Toyota Tercel I knew it had jumped the shark. And that leads to a larger point: instead of trying to dress up a cheap car with stupid bells and whistles, bras, undercarriage lights, louvers, tinted windows, etc. why not just save that money and put it toward a better car? ???
No matter how much you dress up a cheap car, you are not impressing anyone because you are still in a cheap car.

In answer to your question, no car I've owned has worn a bra. Personally, I find them unattractive. Auto paint quality has improved a lot. the paint is more impervious to nicks and dings today. When I recently purchased a new car, the dealer tried to sell me a clear protective coating (like a plastic film) to cover the hood of the car. I declined the offer and the added expense.

Gold emblems...
Those were the "ultimate" in luxury for a couple years.
Did some high end maker do this then it was immediately ripped off by Toyota and some budget imports? That fad died fast.
-
I can't stand the white pickup trucks with black fenders. I know the trend with the black fenders was because they had carbon fiber, but the cheap asses that just spray paint them black is lame.

The club was a great weapon to have in your car. Forget Negan's baseball bat. The club had some weight to it...

Didn't Lee Priest have a superman bra on the front of one of his cars? At 4'11, he really thought he was Superman. lol.
He also had something close to this in his car.

yeah never understood them either.
Car entusiasts still use them today though saw one a few months ago on a car cruise

Lol, yes! Those stupid things. Friend of mine from HS put one on his piece of shit RX7. I swear he waxed that thing every day, yet the clutch was so badly in need of adjustment or replacement it would barely get down the road smelling like an asbestos bbq. Any gas more than idle was lost to slip and he drove it like that for more than a year, sports bra & all.

What about the crown dash air freshners that were so popular among the Hebrew people
-
The worst was these Hebrews that took mail box stickers to spell out crappy slogans or street cred mantras on their hooptie vehicles.
I mean, what's up? Your ass too broke that you couldn't spring for one of those front sun visor strips that went across the top of your windshield and was customized with whatever shitty saying you wanted to announce to the world?
The only thing like that I have seen recently was some one in a Mustang Cobra that had STEEDA across the top.

There's a horrendous trend where I am among the Maori peoples to sticker up their rear windscreens. The prevailing sentiment, in some variety of West Coast Chopper font, is: Justify Your Existence.
Justify. Your existence.
Also spotted occasionally swinging from the underside back end of pickup trucks are scrotae. Balls. Of stainless steel. Also available in blue polyethylene. I swear I am not making this up.

Pin striping is the worst. They first try to get you to pay extra for the pin striping when you buy the car and when you refuse they throw it in for free. Every new car I buy I tell them I won't buy it unless they take it off. They always take off the "I got ripped off" ugly pin striping.

Of course I had a car bra! Actually it came with it when I bought my 87 mr2. That was a badass car. I took it off early on though because water sat between the bra and the hood and I always thought that couldn't be good for the paint.
And yes I also had "the club"
And yes I currently have a 3m clear bra on one of cars. That thing works great and u can't see it on there.

when I moved back home east from SF I gifted my bro in law the MR2. He let it sit in his driveway for years then gave it back. Killed me to see it neglected. Didn't have a blemish on it now it needs restored but cool to have it back. In storage. The pic u posted is a 3rd gen version an MR2 Spyder. I have one of those too.

Oh and who can forget the alpine tape decks of the 80s with the lighted green buttons. A must have. Had that too. In fact it's stil in the old MR2

How about the ones with the faceplate that popped off. I remember guys carrying it with them into the club in their shirt pockets or even worse in fanny packs.

The CRX was a great car, this white example looks good. Unfortunately the ricers took over with fartcan exhausts and shitty body kits and turned it to this:

There were two engines in the Fiero... a 4 banger and a V6.
The 1988 V6 model was actually quite good and if you can find one, is actually something you wouldn't mind owning. Not hugely powerful, but for its size, more than adequate, and the suspension was finally done correctly.
All previous years were shit.

yea. Just read up on it a bit. That was my era abs never really appealed to me. I remember they were always given away on game shows or something. I thought they were all v6. Like I said I had a gen 1 mr2 back then

Overall 80's was a shit decade for cars if u are an enthusiast
Even the Ferrari f40 wasn't well received, critics hated it, the Porsche 959 was a much better car
All American cars of those decades from 70's, 80's, 90's were garbage built and the word "quality" doesn't apply, how people bought these shit boxes is beyond me, gotta be performance only, and not reliability or build quality

When I was in high school one of the local radio stations gave away 15 Fieros! All you had to do was call in at the right time and answer a silly trivia question. I think they gave away one every two weeks. My friends and I spent more minutes than I can count calling in trying to win that stupid car! Sigh. The mid 1980's: the Fiero was a sexy car and Tim Belknap was my idea of a sexy muscleman! Life was so innocent back then. :D
-
I bought one for my '99 Hyundai Tiburon. It had some rust on the hood and would have needed a new one. The bra was cheaper. :-\

Do you live near the ocean or in an area where they use salt on the roads when it snows or gets icy?
-
Do you live near the ocean or in an area where they use salt on the roads when it snows or gets icy?
Yeah, I live in Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately the reality here is that cars will rust. :-\
-
In the Portland, OR metro area the roads are sanded in foul weather conditions. It is course sand with some pebbles in it. It's great for dinging up a car's paint job. >:(
Fortunately, we hardly ever have more than a few days of ice and snow. It's best just to stay home during this time.

The Spoiler is another accessory that started with premium cars like the Porsche and trickled down to average and even cheap cars. There was a time in the mid to late 80's when you could see a spoiler every other car on the road. What a waste. ::)

Spoiler less Porsches look stupid.
-
Don't forget that cars have gotten progressively faster.
Having a spoiler on a rear wheeled vehicle with a decent amount of speed is almost a necessity. While it seems "silly" because cars are "cheap", those "cheap" cars are a hell of a lot faster than they were before.
-
Spoilers are not very common anymore; they were everywhere in the late 1980s and early 90's. Again, they originated on high end cars like the Porsche . . . then trickled down to puny cars like the Honda Civic or Nissan Sentra. Silly. Most people do not drive fast enough for a spoiler to be meaningful. Like most exercises in vanity, it was a waste of money.
Spoilers do belong on some high end cars. On several Porsche models they are integrated and powered and only rise up when the car achieves a specific speed.

Back in the 80's every wanker had anti static things trailing down off the back end of their cars. Did you have them in the USA ?

I really don't know. But every boy racer in 1980 suddenly had them. Apparently they were to take away a build up of static electricity.
