Have any other Getbiggers purchased this voice interactive AI for your palace? I've only had mine for a few days, but it's growing on me. Bodybuilding related, I had it read me choice excerpts from the Ronnie Coleman Wikipedia entry.

The software is the main part. The hardware is nothing more than a bluetooth speaker with a built-in microphone. The computer inside is an ARM cortex which is dirt cheap. That's why Amazon is making so much money.

Yea, and the Amazon unit is quite cheap. And it requires significant back-end processing, which requires money, so some janky open-source code isn't going to cut it. Nor would a tower desktop with a CRT and keyboard cut it as an open-source Alexa in my kitchen. So GTFO with your cheap-ass bullshit.

when the voice echo becomes as good as the one in tony starks laboratory, then i will buy one. but that junk you buy is not even worthy to be my alarm clock. i can spell, believe it or not, and i don't need useless infrmation like how tall is mount everest. what i require from voice echo is the ability to have access to all information around the world, realtime conversations and i also require the voice over to be extremely realistic and humanly reactive and i definitely shouldn't have to say some awake word to activate the thing every time. before all that it's just a baby toy.

You'd be surprised how close the base technology is. What's really required is fantastic voice recognition and conversational state-maintenance. The echo has the best voice recognition I've heard and it's near real-time. It's conversational state is in its infancy, but you can see the flashes of brilliance there; if it's playing a playlist and you say, "next track", it correctly infers that you are referring to the playing playlist. It's shocking how something that we take so much for granted is actually a complex software problem.
Believe it or not, the rest is just plugging in info-sources and IoT and that's trivial.

the conversational state is in it's infancy, it's basically "u tell me what i need to do and it do" and u have to call the program by it's awake word most of the time. besides, if we're having a party and the music is banging, u would have to manually change the song now anyway because the voice echo can't hear shit. i don't need a machine for that. every thing i can do manually i'll do it, but a debate, food for thought conversations.. maybe when i'm going out of the house the ai bot asks; "HEY! u got ur keys, cellphone and ur wallet? don't forget your headset, u know how u love to listen to music when u go out!. then i'd be like "nah i'd like to listen to the sounds of the world now, don't need my headset now. and then the voice echo would be like; "hahaha, that's gay. whatever, have a nice day!". shit like that

I understand that you don't have the scientist's fascination that I do with emerging tech. But mark my words that the Echo's ecosystem has reached an escape velocity.

fine fine, it could be fun. maybe i'm not appreciating it enough, i got first world problem symptoms

i don't need this. i've already got voices in my head, they talk to me.... ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Probably not much from an informational standpoint, but the device is nifty, with solid voice recognition, 7 directional noise-reductive microphones and decent sound.

Not sure what Vince is talking about with a quick Google search, the omni multi directional mic that can detect you over music seems very impressive, sadly not available in the U.K yet.

i still can't stand the fact that you have to activate the junk almost every time; "homo! put on the tv! homo! change the channel! homo! turn on stereos! homo! what do you think about james bond being black in the next movie? oh you can't engage into that level of conversation? well format c:/ then u fucking scrap!"
i just don't think it's high tech. switching channels, music tracks, turning on/off lights... i wanted that shit in the early 90's. i want the tony stark system already, fuck this gameboy level crap.

The problem is that it's always listening and needs to know when it's actually being addressed or it would constantly be butting into conversations. If you've a better way (directional mics that KNOW you are looking at the device?), I am sure that they would be all ears.
Related: my wife is constantly fighting herself to thank Alexa for her help.

i guess i emphasized too much on the fact you need an activation word. forget about it, because my problem really is ur attitude to this technology ;D. like i said, if it could engage into full out debates/conversations i would want one. if i asked alexa why would trump be an excellent president and why would trump not be an excellent president, and i wanted a social stand point, economical stand point and a political stand point i wish the machine could give me some next level shit for an answer, but i guess it can only switch tv channels, tell how many planets are in our solar system, answer to what's 33 times 2... it's fun i guess, but you act like it's some super freak technology, come on man!

I suppose it's my ability as an engineer to see the potential prior to its full-fledged glory. Your mind is obviously closed.
And we as a scientific community are still quite a ways from an AI that can have "feelings" and "opinions" on events. My guess is you'll never see that in your lifetime.

As an Amazon Prime customer I was able purchase an ECHO at a discounted price months before it was available to the general public.
It was a novel 'radio' with a great sound almost comparable to BOSE.
But some unknown house guest managed to sneak off with it in the heat of the night and ALEXA didn't even yell for help on her way outside the door.
I will be purchasing another one but first I'll check out MYCROFT to see if it is any better.
BTW ... I like AMAZON PRIME because all my Amazon purchases are mailed free of charge ...... even a tank it they ever start selling tanks.
And AMAZON offers its Prime members almost unlimited TV series and movies absolutely free of charge.
I believe it cost me about $100 a year and I recommend it highly if you buy stuff via Amazon.

I would pay the $100 to watch The Man in the High Castle

Not as good as my extensive Sonos system, but not bad.

"Mycroft. Why are black people so stupid that they want the 90s back."
Wonder if it can answer that. hahahaa

My wife keeps asking me to research the best speaker system for our kitchens so we can have music instantly. Is this Sonos thing something you would recommend?
-
Don't waste your money. Mycroft will be complete soon. Its open source so the software will be free.

It's very, very good. I am sure that you can find something with better sound, but not nearly as convenient.

why do you want everything for free?

why do you want everything for free?
You're asking a man who is planning to move into a refrigerator box as a home someday.

why do you want everything for free?
If you could get something for free or pay for it, which would you pick?
That is what Vince is probably thinking about.

Adonis: Because black aren't stupid enough to vote for a slimebag who sponsored a bill in 1994 to dump nuclear waste from Vermont into Sierra Blanca, Texas a poor Latino community. Would you like to learn more about Bernie's record in the 90's ?? ;D

Honestly, I wouldn't waste the time. Can't see any real benefit other than a novelty item at this time. When it gets hardwired into the house, then it will be awesome

Hardwired? Wow, such a technologist.
-
Hardwired? Wow, such a technologist.
Its just a general term as it uses bluetooth. Once every device and appliance in a home is connected then the true power of a smart home can be realized.

POS redundant tech.

Visit a showroom and listen to the Bose SoundTouch 20 or 30; I have the 30. Even when used in a large room the sound (on the 30) is very good. You can preset 6 stations including almost any local (or internet) radio station as well as music services like Spotify, SiriusXM, Pandora, iHeartRadio, Deezer, and the entire music library on your computer. The SoundTouch is basically a WiFi speaker. You can control it with any smart phone (once you download the app), with an app on your computer, with the included remote control, or with the built in buttons on the device. It includes, Bluetooth so while you can stream your entire computer library to it, you can also bluetooth directly from your phone's music library to it. You may also connect it to your television via a hardline IN.
The SoundTouch is also scalable. If you later decide to add to the system, you can buy another SoundTouch and play the music in different rooms. For example in your kitchen and a bedroom. You may continue to add to the system as your needs grow. If you want to add a speaker to your patio or pool deck you can do that as well and have the same music playing on all three speakers (kitchen, bedroom, patio). Or you can have different music/radio stations playing on all three or more devices. The ability to scale this system and the flexibility with which you can control it is a real advantage. It is also small enough to be mobile though I have never moved mine since setting it up.
As with any speaker, it is important that you hear the sound quality for yourself to determine if you find it satisfactory. The system does have limits. You cannot use it to play to a 5000 seat concert hall or host a block party, but that's not why you buy a speaker like this. The 30 is great, the 20 is satisfactory. I do not think I would buy the SoundTouch 10 as I think the sound output is took weak but it all depends on where you plan to use it. I will definitely buy another SoundTouch 30 or 20 in the future.

Sonos does all this and is excellent too - in terms of setup, interface, sound, and customer support.

That's actually an excellent idea, Vince.

I kind of agree with Bay (without understanding all the technology behind it) but the BOSE system is the best I've ever heard.
I have yet to hear anything better ... but I have not heard them all yet.
I am trying to convince family members who are in the motion picture production business to equip their home theater with the best projection and audio equipment that money can buy (thinking that it will be a tax write off anyway).
So far I have recommended BOSE for the sound and this new VIDEO WALL
that I have only seen in Las Vegas (check it out behind The Palms Hotel check-in desk).
I should have more info on that soon enough, but if you see it, you will most likely agree that it appears to be the best damn visual wall that money can buy .... if it can be bought by the general public today.
Some of you GetBiggers may already be familiar with this 'piece of visual equipment", so let me know if you can provide details.

Sonos makes a soundbar for use with TV/Video games.
To be honest, I'm sure all the systems are great. I'm partial to Sonos, and I think you get more for the $$.....I have 4 speakers currently. Wish the Play 1 was available when I bought, though, since the Play 3's are a bit too much for some of the smaller rooms I have. They're perfect for the high ceiling ones though.
-
Yea! Thanks, Grape!
Those two articles were well worth reading! I now plan to go out and check the SONOS speakers this next week.
I assume that they will have a SONOS system set up at FRY'S.
I really ain't much of a 'audiophile' so I will probably not notice much of a difference.

Same here, man. I'll bet they all sound great.
I've probably gotten 4-5 people on to Sonos, and they all love it. I'm a bit biased, so when I checked the reviews, the one thing that stood out was the price.
-
What would the difference be?
Vince had the know-it-all to have it hard wired into the house. No one else thought of that on here.

Because that's outdated.
I have no less than 60 separate lines of Cat-5e cable hard wired throughout my entire house. IT guy who feared wifi security built it.
Mostly useless now due to wifi, but I hardwire the Xbox for gaming.

hahah yeah, I feel sorry for all of those people who spent thousands and thousands hardwiring their house for eveything. Epic waste.

Well, to be fair, for Vince to hardwire the place he's building, it takes about 5 feet of cable.

So this Amazon Echo thing has shit sound compared to the others right?

If you want just a speaker. Yeah. Get something else.
-

What can't be accurate?
Guy went bananas with the cat-5. I have up to 8 separate cables in a single room. It's stupid.
-
To be fair to Vince, in my house, if it doesn't move, I put it on the cat6 gigE internal LAN. so all the xboxes, desktops, rokus and apple tvs are all on the wire. I don't both with the Sonos or the Echo tho.
-
Sonos rules. When the Sonos is finally Alexa enabled, that'll be sweet.
And Vince, your "smart" house with all the IoT is completely consistent with the Echo's trajectory. In fact, the Echo is counting on it. The Echo is the early leader to be the control plane for your house. Whether your cheap-ass likes it or not. Well, not your cardboard box, but my 5000 sqft house, yes.
-
So this Amazon Echo thing has shit sound compared to the others right?
Amazon is quite shitty compared to Caliber Fitness and Caliber Grocery.

Same, I have everything on cat6

My buddy loves his. True story, the commercial with Alec Baldwin came on where he was talking with his Alexa, my buddy's heard the commercial and started talking back...

Regardless of GOOD/BETTER/BEST .... The introduction of ECHO, MYCROFT, and a list of others just shows what is possible now and where the hell the electronic world is heading within the next ten years.
Today you can even buy a functional 'keyboard' that is merely a projection onto a flat surface by your cell phone. (Hologram??!!)
And watch for OCULUS as well as other Virtual Reality systems to take the world by storm.
TA, somewhere up above yu asked if the ECHO sound was any good.
I am unable to comment on what is the best of today's sound systems, but the ECHO (ALEXA) really turned me on when I first turned it on.
I presently don't demand too much when it comes to sound systems but with all this appreciated information regarding this subject, I'll be heading down to FRY's to see if I can really hear any difference among the leaders within this industry.
Mycroft appears to be amazing in that it seems to be a 'system' for the entire household .... and can even lock your front door among other things that lazy assed individuals find too taxing to do themselves.
I think I'll get one of those also!
-

Did Goodrum have anything to do with the installation of cat-5 in your home?
-
Do you have to called it Alexa? Can you rename it? Want to call mine kneega. I can then be like "kneega give me the time". I'd want it to call me master. " it's 9:12 master".

Where have you been, my knee grow? The virtual keyboard thing has been available in the Sky Mall mag on planes for like a decade and people have been talking about the Oculus Rift for at least 3 years.
-
Oculus Rift Tos is ridiculous. I'm going to hold out for the hololens
-
I have a more advanced version of this. Call it "My girlfriend". Managed to even cook me a dinner today, can't still fugure out how is that possible, but I only had to say "I'm hungry".
