Title: Possible knee surgery
Post by: bigbadwolfe on April 20, 2016, 08:44:55 AM
Any of you guys ever had to have knee surgery? I have had bad arthritis in my knees for the last 5-6 years but I could live with the pain, pop some ibuprofen and go. 2 years ago I did the Savage Race which is one of those crazy mud run obstacle course things that was 6.2 miles up and down a local ski resort we got. From that day forward my knees especially the left one have killed me.

About 3.5 weeks ago I was at Westside Barbell doing paused 2 board presses. I had 700 pounds on the bar brought it down got the press command and about 1/2 way up I really kicked down hard to utilize all my leg drive. When I did I felt a slight pop in my knee I finished the lift reached down rubbed my knee it was sore but not an intense pain like if I would of tore something. Iced everything that night like always and the following day even did some cardio on our elliptical.

The next morning it was swole and I could not bare any weight on it at all. I went to my chiropractor (he's cheap and trains at my gym) he worked on it for a bit we tried rehab and massage which helped a bit but it just did not seem to want to heal. So after 3.5 weeks of self rehab I broke down and went to the Dr. He took 50cc's of fluid off my knee yesterday. Which helped loosen it up but now this thing feels so unstable, I'm scheduled for an MRI next week.

Guess my question is how many of you have dealt with knee issues, scopes, surgeries, replacements and how long did it take you to get back in the game? I'm pretty sure they will both need replaced at some point in time.

I had a knee op in 1999. Using the key hole surgery thing. My cartilage was damaged. I could start rehab very quickly with leg press but not squats. I also remember asking the Professor when i could do my Karate that i was doing at the time and he said 8 months it will be OK. I tried after 3 months to train (Karate) and had pain. I would do the MRI and wait out. Nowadays i´m fine.

Another thing which helped was simply going for a cycle on a mountain bike. The Proffessor told me to cycle every Day 30 mins..this helped me much more than Physio.

Because they're fucking fun.

The thing is, you need to be in shape to do them.

I did a 13 miler on the side of Killington and was fine the next day.

Had 3 ACL/miniscus replacements, PM any specific questions if u would like. I can say "instability" is the worst sign (believe it or not, pain is usually a good sign--likely sprain) and demonstrates that an ACL is likely torn  :-\

We did it in honor of my training partners Dad who passed. 100 yards into it I was like WTF am I doing, but I pushed thru and finished it. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

Once he drained the knee it became very unstable and he said that was a sign that something was probably torn. So yeah that sucks!!! But the good thing is I'm getting it fixed asap and will be able to rehab and then move on with my training.

Thanks guys!
