I know there aren't a lot of us on here from Alberta...but i felt i should finally start a topic about this. I posted a few pics and links in the random pic thread days ago.
There is a wildfire burning in the province of Alberta in western Canada. Tuesday afternoon without honestly any warning or expectations the winds picked up and changed directions and headed straight for the city of Ft. McMurray...a city of 88,000 people. The entire city...88,000 people were told to evacuate immediately. People honestly had less than 5 minutes to get out of their homes and leave. This is 1 of if not the biggest evacuations in Canadian history. By Tuesday night over 1,600 homes were destroyed. Its a remote city way up north and unfortunately there REALLY is only 1 highway(road) out of town north and south. 88,000 people all trying to get out at once on 1 road.
google/youtube Ft.McMurray fire and you will get lots of stories, links, videos.
-
The fire is now over (for you Americans) 605 square miles and expected to double in the next day.
-
Looks like the end of the world. Unreal
-
unreal. so sad. im in Ontario and its awful to see the pics and vids.

Looks like the end of the world. Unreal
its unbelievable.
1 of my friends has lost her home and and her parents too. :'(
-
It's beyond. The whole city evacuated. Tens of thousands told to bail and go ...
One dude remembered his cell could log on to his home security camera. The footage from the living room was presented in time-lapse on the news and shows flames licking outside the sliding doors. The glass eventually pops and thick smoke engulfs the interior. Then fire invades and it's game over.
His home of 20 years.
Just horrible.
-
the severity of it is so bad there are TONS of "famous" people donating tyo the cause.
Mark Walhberg and his family are donating sales from their restaurant to the effort.
James Taylor has a few shows in Canada in the next few days...all proceeds are going the the people
Rob Schneider is doing a show and all proceeds are going to Ft. Mac
The St.Louis Blues NHL team donated money from their 50/50 draw at their last playoff game

The city of Edmonton has taken in the huge majority of these people with open arms.

our winter was extremely dry this year and we've had next to no rain this spring yet. Temperatures hit(for you Americans) The 90's this past week and winds really kicked up there

ya they say the fire will spread to Sask in the next couple days. This is up north. Josh in MUCH farther south in Sask
-
not sure if anyone here cares.....but if you want to help, you can donate to the Canadian red cross....which goes to the FT. Mac people.
send a text to 30333 with the word 'redcross'

Yup, and this soon after the spring melt nothing had time to green up yet so the trees, brush and grass are like kindling. I live farther north than Ft. Mc and the last bit of snow/ice is still melting, but we're at a 'very high' forest fire index already ffs. The last few years have been super dry all over norther Alberta, Sask, BC and the NWT. They're expecting the same or worse than last year, so I may take off back east for the summer. We were on evacuation prep up here last summer and it was scary stuff. Fires on three side of the town but luckily the weather/wind cooperated and we escaped damage b/c the fire team managed to dig out a firebreak. Being caught up in this shit is horrible. You feel helpless and there's practically no escape from the residual effects. The sky was constantly hazy and the air was ashy. Constantly smells like a camp fire, which you can't get away from even with windows closed. Would be horrible for people with breathing problems. Feel for the ppl of Ft Mc and surrounding communities. Sent my $$ donation already and will drop off some water and can goods to the local collection site soon.

because people had to leave so fast...100's of cars got stranded on the highway ..ran out of gas. You have 88,000 people all leaving at once with fire basically ON YOU...you cant get gas. People from Edmonton filled up the back of their trucks with supplies and drove up their to help.
-
Apparently most of downtown Ft McMurray was untouched by the fire.
-
It's been really sad watching this story. I'm on the east coast and I feel compelled to donate what I can in order to help my fellow Canadians. The fire is so massive that despite all the efforts by firefighters really the only thing that can stop this thing is the weather. :(
-
so as of now the fire has moved away from the city...we finally got some rain here yesterday and the temp has dropped. The size of the forest fire is still growing unfortunately though.
24,000 buildings have been destroyed. It will be at least 6 weeks before people can go back there(90,000 people). :'(
The world has really come forward to help though which is amazing! USA , Mexico, Israel, Australia and Russia have all offered their assistance to help battle the fire.

And the feminist in Ottawa is too stupid to accept help being offered from the International community.

ya Trudeau said no thank you. I dont know a lot about politics so i save judgement most times. Not sure how that would play out if we accept. Not sure if it comes with any "strings attached".
I just assume his advisers no more than me :-\
-
Also....... the area burnt already is 400,000 acres...more than half the size of Rhode Island :'(
-
Justin "PM Selfie" Trudeau would rather give billions to other countries and Moozie "refugees" and ruin Canada's long-term interests than visit Alberta.
Seriously, he's a disastrous prime minister and a deplorable human being.

More often than not, they don't. They need to swallow their pride and take help when it is offered so everything people have worked for doesn't continue to go up in flames.

I could not have said it better myself.
-
Trudeau is undermining Canadian values.
I hate the guy so much.
He's everything that's wrong with contemporary radical liberalism.

meh im in-different right now.
Honestly what good would it do if he actually came here besides a great photo op and publicity? If he came here it would mean lots of police/RCMP would need to be pulled from more important stuff right now to watch him. Where ever he went, most people would have to leave for safety reasons for him. Right now the federal government is giving help/aid/money/support and really thats all that matters. He can go when things have eased up a bit.
As for the Syrian refugees that he brought in to Canada......they have been letting Ft. Mc people come stay with them, offering food and supplies. And these people came her with NOTHING.

-
How did the fire start?

It's customary for a leader to visit a community so hard hit. Me, I'm glad he keeps away. But it's the principle.
He just gave some 3rd-world shithole a couple billion yet states the Feds will match donations dollar to dollar.
Bringing in nation-destroying Muslims is a tactic to bolster the liberal voting block. Immigrants vote liberal, period.
(Even still, why not bring in Christian Syrians, at the very least? They're MUCH more in jeopardy in the Middle East than any Muslim inhabitant could ever be.)
Mass immigration is the Islamic radical's battle tool of choice.
He's weakening restrictions on immigrants and making conditions favourable for a great many to be seniors. With no requirement for older arrivals to know English or French.

:o :o :o :o :'( :'( :'( :'(
(CNN)The mammoth inferno devastating northern Alberta has now destroyed more than 877,000 acres -- more than four times the size of New York City.
Well over 1,700 firefighters are trying to get a grip on the blaze, which started May 1 near Fort McMurray.
But as of Wednesday, the fire is still 0% contained, the Alberta Agriculture and Forestry department said.
Even worse: The blaze is marching east toward Saskatchewan and will likely reach the province Wednesday, Alberta wildfire official Chad Morrison said.

yup. its beyond trying to understand how bad this is. FINALLY we've gotten some decent rain here in the last few days and are expecting more through the weekend. But they say right now....even rain isnt stopping this :(

What can stop it?
-
luck.
they need LOTS of constant rain. And then hope that the winds can play along and blow back to the burned out areas. And time
Whats amazing about all of this though....you look at the graphic i posted showing the fire growth and spread. Smack in the middle is the city f Ft. McMurray and "only" 2,800 homes/structures were destroyed. About 75% of the city was untouched. The fire crews did a fantastic job!!! And no one was killed
-
can my whole world catch on fire?

i was checking out the link you posted here. Saw all the pics of Ft. Mac again. It breaks my heart seeing these pics again. Ive had so many friends loose everything they had. Forced from their homes for WEEKS/MONTHS.
I was at the bank about a week ago for work. It was just me there and then a woman with her probably 10 year old son walked in. She went to a teller and wanted to cash a cheque. I didnt heard what her son said but i heard the mom respond "so we can eat tonight". The teller then asked something and the woman said "its for the Ft. McMurray fire." I then put it together that they were from there. I caught her as she was leaving and gave her some money. She broke down in tears and just hugged me and said thank you non stop. That really put a face to the people that are without EVERYTHING right now.
