Perhaps the CEO of Verizon saw this pic & decided that he finally needed to integrate their call center with more developmentally challenged minorities to get that tax break, & voilà, Melvin Goodrum gets called up to the big leagues.

Melvin Goodrum has a slew of fake degrees he bought online, but I'd be surprised if he actually graduated from high school.
