I know only democrats are evil enough to question the police... but I think many conservatives will question their actions here. They let the trump people get their asses kicked. Perhaps they thought these internet tough guys could fight, based upon their constant cries for greater torture, exporting 11 million people, and overall "greatness".
While several physical assaults did occur, the police personnel on scene had the difficult task of weighing the need to immediately apprehend the suspect(s) against the possibility that police action involving the use of physical force under the circumstances would further insight the crowd and produce more violent behavior

What I get from that is that the side you're supporting is so aggressive and violent that even highly trained and armed officers were afraid to confront them.
