Title: Opinions on maltitol
Post by: Al Doggity on June 08, 2016, 01:39:12 PM
Just bought a sleeve of  "sugar-free" cookies that use maltitol as the sweetening agent. Never heard of it.
Have been cutting back on sugar recently, not so much for weight, but because it is my main vice. Been reading up on it and it's hard to say whether or not maltitol is a step up or pretty much the same.

quick wiki search and I'd say it's the same, if not worse. One of its ingredients is corn syrup.

If you're dieting any type of artificial sweetener = the same shit. Stick with sugar :P

It's marketing scam.  They use sugar in the form of alcohol which they don't have to show the calories of on food labels.  That's why beers can claim shit like being low cal even though they aren't

Sugar alcohol fucks with my gut in terrible ways.

I cut back on sugar last year and gave up candy.

I miss Sour Patch Kids, terrible.  :'(

Just don't eat any cookies, or eat a couple of normal ones a week.  Won't make a difference.

Same here, even chewing gum gives me gas and sometimes the shits. But I can't give up gum :( especially when dieting down.

I'm not on any specific diet but thought less sugar would be healthier.

TBH, I don't feel or look any better and didn't need to lose weight. I'm probably healthier and don't miss crashing after a big bag of Sour Patch Kids, but still dream about eating candy.

Sugar alcohols are great for relieving constipation, but they reek havoc on your gut.

Stick with real cookies.

If you've ever been to an expo, the sugar-free protein bar sample area always smells like farts for this very reason

Had no adverse reactions to the cookies. It sounds like that's more of an individualized reaction, like people who hate cilantro.

Yeah, this is basically where I'm at . I've posted about my sugar addiction on here before. The fact that cutting out sugar doesn't really affect my appearance is sort of a double-edged sword. When I'm standing in front of the ice cream truck trying to convince myself I don't need a double dip with sprinkles, I don't really factor in my waistline and if you don't have to do that, you really lose a lot of motivation to steer clear of certain foods.

It's really just that sugar is basically poison. In moderation, it's not so bad, but I don't consume it in moderation and it's the only thing in the western diet that I can think of that has no nutritional benefits. As I get older, my bigger concern is that I can look fine and healthy and still become a diabetic. I also fully believe that cancer feeds off of sugar.

Funny how people think Sugar makes you fat and causes cancer yet Indians consume more sugar per capita than anywhere else in the world yet they are thin and don't have high cancer rates.

Is this accurate?  ??? I'll look it up, but if it's true, it might have something to do with it being a predominately vegetarian country. You really don't think America's obesity epidemic is related to our high national sugar consumption?

I don't feel it's poison, just something that needed to be cut down.

One of these is sitting on our coffee table right now. A friend brought it by not knowing I'd cut out the candy.

I guess if you are being technical, nothing is a poison but everything has a toxic level. But when you look at how sugar affects the body- tooth decay, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, drug-like response- compared to the benefits it has, it's bizarre. Nothing else causes as much damage and the stuff that is comparable, at least have a few nutritional benefits. And I LOOOOOVE sugar.

If it's not for your appearance and you don't see anything too bad about sugar, why torture yourself by cutting it out? (For me, it IS torture. I stood in a deli the other day staring at a bag of vanilla stuffed Combos trying to rationalize buying them.) When I turned 30, I started severely limiting my salt intake, but after doing some research, decided it wasn't necessary. I don't really do "moderation" anywhere in my diet, but to me, it just seems the damage excessive sugar does can't be overcome by being physically active.

I looked it up and India's cancer rates and obesity have been rising drastically over the past few decades and public health officials say changes in diet are a big part of the reason. India does not have the highest per capita sugar consumption in the world, it has the highest total global sugar consumption but still only a fraction of the per capita consumption of western countries.

Still think the biggest cancer causer are cell phone towers, wifi and other radio waves.  Studies done proving they're safe are from a single source but of course we are bombarded by thousands of sources at any given time.  All of those waves flying through your body must have some sort of effect on the body.

Excellent question!

A friend and I were talking about a documentary he recently saw called "Fed Up" that detailed how the sugar industry had used lobbying (and millions of dollars) to exempt itself from RDAs being listed on labels. At any rate' I made a thoughtless, foolish, sweeping statement about cutting down sugar and stupidly repeated it to DGF. After she stopped laughing her ass off.... she informed me that candy was made out of sugar, LOL! At any rate pure stubbornness and owning stupidity are the reasons I battle addiction to my beloved Sour Patch Kids.

'no nutritional benefits'

Except the, uh, you know macroNUTRIENT 'carbohydrate', which has made up the bulk of human diet since time immemorial ::)

You got me. I kinda feel like this hasn't convinced me to consider sugar as a source of carbs, though. In my head, I'm thinking more of refined and added sugar.

Yes. You read correctly, LOL!

I've stopped the main source of sugar but wouldn't consider it a "ban". Weight is still 200, work out 6 days/week, reasonable diet blah blah blah, but I haven't really noticed any difference aside from not getting the sugar high/crash. I ate so much candy, for so long, that the sugar became an afterthought.

We don't have any type 1 diabetics in the family and any fat people have been fat most of their life. Even my sister didn't develop type 2 diabetes until well after 50 and being fat for years and ignoring all kinds of health advice from doctors.

"We’ve heard for years about the dangers of eating too much fat or salt. But there have never been recommended limits for sugar on Canadian food labels, despite emerging research that suggests the sweet stuff may be making more of us fat and sick"

You are not the only one battling SPKA, or Sour Patch Kids Addiction. Millions of Americans battle the same problem. It's a long journey. Just stay away from the Gusher versions.

Ignoring the fact that you did say that you did mention health earlier in this thread, I have to say that these are the worst reasons for doing anything that I've ever read and I'm not sure if the fact that you admit they are stupid makes it better or worse.

Honesty and stupidity aren't mutually exclusive.

Are you busting my balls because of what I wrote in  the ice cream thread?  The only thing that would make me care would be the inclusion of butterfingers pieces.

Not busting balls. I actually had two of those shakes in 2 days. Was enjoying a ride and stopped for lunch and then dinner last night.

Eventually, Sour Patch Kids will beat my stubbornness. I was upset about something last week and almost binged on a three pound bag those little sour/sweet motherfuckers. Only thing that stopped me was stubbornness and the embarrassment I would have felt at binging for that reason. In my own stupid way of thinking: That wouldn't have been any different than having a drink because I was upset.

They'll get me eventually.  :)
