Title: Gaspari & Labrada on covers 2016
Post by: Pet shop boys on July 01, 2016, 02:04:51 PM
Flex magazine July/ausgust and M&D May 2016  Gaspari and Labrada ....

If in the summer of 89' when Labrada and Gaspari were fan favorites to knock Haney down , you would have told me that some 27 years later they were going to be back on covers of bodybuilding publications  I'd say no way !

But it happened ....

Want another proof that nobody cares about 5x MrO Phil and that current bodybuilding is dead?

Older guys (45 +) are probably the last folks left buying mags too, so I expect a lot more classic bodybuilding issues.

The bodybuilding "press" seem to be catering for the schmoealistic nostalgists who bought the okie-doke before the peptite era.

Personalizes gold sneekers, LV man-bags and customised "lion rings" just don't appeal to those here before generation nothingness :-\

Really?  I'm in that demographic and I haven't bought a BB magazine since the early 1990s.  :-X

I think so, I rarely see anyone (young or older) bother with the fitness mags outside of say something like Men's Health, but when I do it's usually an older guy, and the only ones that seem to follow the print mags are the hardcore older meat heady types.

I think it's sorta like the printed  porn industry, mostly dead, but a few places/mags are sustained by the stragglers.

Wooshhh  comparing today's bodybuilding with porn is beyond depressing....

However; While printed magazines are fading I think most are missing the point,

You see a baseball magazine Summer 2016; and they feature the current sluggers and pitchers on cover, not the all star players from 25 plus years ago ....

Admit it ! Philsulin and the rest f today's bodybuilding "stars" are not inspiring or entertaining at all .

The articles are dead too. Just looking at that cover, "more mass killer workout", "blast your arms", "10 ways to slash fat", another secret abs workout, etc  :P Stuff was old 40 years ago.

But that is bodybuilding in general, as an activity , you can say same thing about any other "sport' activity .... only difference is that today's bodybuilders are not good enough for the job.

With the exception of a mag with Reeves and/or Arnold on the cover a few years ago, it's been over 30 years or so.  I cannot recall when I bought that last mag, dammit!  ;D  They've become supplement catalogs and their informative content is worthless (as if it ever truly was!  ;D).

I'm in that demographic as well.Have not bought a new muscle mag since the 1990s. They are so predictBle, spring issues always speak of shredding for the summer. Fall issues speak of powering up the weights and wearing sweats. The new mags are all adds at best.I still have ever mag I bought since the mid 70s.

Labrada is excellent.

Gaspari is a hodge podge of leftover Dwarf and Halfling parts thrown together by a mentally retarded version of Saruman the Off-White..."Release your Wang-Riders!"

The last issue I bought was Weider's Muscle and Fitness where it featured Arnold's win in 1980.

Occasionally (and even then it's been years), I'd flipped through a muscle rag at the news rack, but even then I stuff inside another magazine featuring granny porn, or something like that, so people around me won't think I'm some creep.

Disagree. I was never a huge fan of Gaspari's physique but I don't think he was gifted structurally for bbing. But what he did and accomplished out of sheer determination, discipline and "to the death" drive is something I admire and respect.

What did Lee weigh that day? Looks to be 250 there. I think Rich claimed to be 5'9", but wasn't over 5'8" (3" shorter than 5'11" Haney). When Rich made his comeback in the mid 90's I think he was in his mid 240's.

Gaspari wasn't a dwarf. He was at least 5'8" (maybe even 5'9"). Labrada was around 5'3"-5'4".

He's not that short.  I've seen him at several expos in the last couple of years and he's in the 5' 8-9" range.

He's about 1 inch taller than me, so that would make him about 5'9 or really close.

I said Dwarf and Halfling parts.  Stubby looking.   He looks thrown together but I will say he worked for what he got.  I prefer the aesthetic flow of Labrada over both Gaspari and Haney.  Shoot, I think Gaspari looks better than Haney in some poses/contests.  Haney should never have won more than a couple of Olympias but that's just one opinion and win 8 of them he did.

Was very disappointed at how small the mag has gotten and the last 3 issues have been BB'ers from yesteryear, Lou, Rich and Lee.....
