Title: The ALMOST Mister Olympia thread
Post by: Dr Dutch on July 07, 2016, 02:22:06 PM
There have been lots of BB that were soooo close or even should have been Mr O.

I start with,,,,,,Rich Gaspari.

Genetically poor, he stated that he literally would have died to be Mr O....I believe him.

GASPARI looked good in 87-88, but burned himself out (including a pec ter) and it was a slow decline to this:

1981, Danny Padilla. I'd also be ok with Platz winning the 1981 Olympia also. Franco winning was a travesty.

Was a teriific BB in shoulders, arms, quads. Amazing.

In no particular order Menzter, Padilla and Paris come to mind.  Mentzer walked and whined away when he should have returned with a vengeance.  Padilla was robbed too as was Paris.

He's probably better than the best Mr. O, in '93 anyway.

He wore cut off tracksuits so that he would be forced to hammer the living shit out of them until they improved

Gaspari was one of my favorites...until I met him a few times. I was working the boards/clubs down the jersey shore in late 80s. Dude was an arrogant douche. He dated the sister to a guy i knew, told me Gaspari was known to be hand happy when it came to the ladies.

I would have liked to see either one or both (Kevin or Shawn) win. To me, the ONLY year Flex should have had a legit chance was 1993 and had Yates not shown up at 256/257 pounds of huge chiseled muscle, it would have been Flex's win easily.

Let's not forget '98. Ronnie beat Flex by the skin of his teeth that year.

After driving hours to see his seminar in Philly or Jersey or somewhere in the late 80s, I was stupid and naive enough to ask him about something he said in a Flex magazine interview.  His response was "Is that what they made up that I said?"  He had clearly not done any such interview and it was all made up.

The beginning of the end of my innocence.  I watched him training his biceps that morning and was amazed and impressed by his concentration and vascularity.

Shawn Ray Got Fucked twice!

I'll 2nd that. He is so unfairly raped on this site. He was a Tier 1 material and should have won it at least once, if not twice. He literally was the complete package with virtually no flaws, other than being 5'6"/5'7" which isn't THAT short for a bodybuilder. It was his outspoken mouth that got him on bad terms with the judges and getbig.

Shawn was the almost complete BB.....but he was always the smallest among the top contestants.
With guys like Haney, Yates, and Levone.....he was just too small.
The bigger guy with great muscle and shape always beats the smaller ones......life sucks, don't it ?

Shawn was way bigger than than Lee Labrada and imo way better. He carried mass while not compromising his lines and symmetry.
