I suspect that some of them are remembering the L.A. riots and panicking.

Yes, I assume they are panicking because they do not know what the protestors may do.
However, if you run over and kill a few people, there is no way youre not doing jail time. All a lawyer would have to say is, "Why couldn't you take a detour instead of killing 6 people with your 2500 pound car?" Game. Set. Match. That person will be doing a relatively long stint in jail.
All I am speaking on is how I think the law would react.

one thing I have always noticed as ironic is when any group here in Toronto is doing some kind of March on the streets, even the ones that hate cops or are targeting cops as part of protest, the organizers notify or have the cops escort them 99% of the time. Trust me I have seen many of these marches go on as a bystander and every fucking time they either have a police escort or them there for crowd control.
not sure if they are on the special paid duty or sent but its rare to see a march(peaceful or otherwise) without cops as security in some form up here
hell the Sri Lankans a few years back even did an illegal march on the expressway, and not a head was cracked.
