Utter destruction..

Whoever set the stage that year was kissing Joe Weider's ass. They put such a large & obnoxious painting of Joe in the background, that it stole the audience's attention away from the competitors.

Unreal.. even with all of the injuries, Doz's back seemed to continue getting better.

That portrait-picture is incredibly distracting.

The IFBB is a clown parade, I swear.

His injuries that year were a real shame.  We were going to see something really special that year from Dorian.
I'm thinking something along the lines of the 2003 Ronnie.

Muscletime photos, on the whole, are pretty awful.

Compare them to the pic you posted below - he looks insane there.   Yates live had to be seen to understand.  It's cliche at this point, but it's true.

This is so true.  I hate when people dismiss the notion of having to see Yates live to truly understand how Great he was.

Same as Lee Haney, you had to see it up close to really comprehend how thick and massive he was.

I was backstage at a contest in Michigan (1996) when he was getting ready to guest pose.  I'm still awestruck
20 years later.  They announced him as being 310 pounds and the dude had abs.

Yeah, that pic is the best at showing that, hands down.  If you post it with a straight on muscletime photo from the front at the same show, his legs can actually look skinny and 2d.  That's how guys like Hulkster who have never been to a show get caught up in thinking he was awful.

These guys on youtube recently recently released excellent
footage from that show. Way better than the IFBB video.
Yates had that old man muscle before 40.
ENJOY!
BTW - Go big screen on youtube- bottom right corner of vid.
That will take you to; HD Nasser, Shawn, Kevin, Priest.
KL looked awesome at night dropping a bunch of water from
prejudging.

How weird was Joe W?

At the IFBB 's "superbowl" the backdrop of the stage is a GIANT portrait of his head placed on a muscular torso......

He was so worried people wouldn't know who he was? Could you imagine Roger Goodell or Adam Silver doing something like this?

I could understand Arnold having his bust back there, or Haney, Scott, Olvia or any other historical bodybuilder.

Joe never even competed, he was no legendary bodybuilder. He was a promoter.

It'd be like Trump doing the same thing at the Miss America pageant, completely unimaginable, but Joe did it....

LOL Earl..

I don't care that it's called the Joe Weider Mr. Olympia, he deserves the recognition, no question.

But you don't see Adam Silver or Dr. James Nasmsith in blackface wearing NBA uniforms..... Joe could have had some class but he decided to be a world class schmoe.... r.i.p.

Exactly. And great point

Silver, the NBA commissioner ( the modern equivalent of promoter Joe Weider  (or the founder of the ifbb/ hence the Dr James Nasmsith reference) understand it's about the sport not him.  Silver promotes the sport and it's history focusing on the big picture, the longevity of his company. Joe loved promoting himself, its called the Weider principal of ego boosting.

i'm fine with joe putting his name on it, we would not have this sport if not for him, think of all the amazing bodies we saw because of him, stop being so ungrateful you'd still be a pencil neck geek if not for Mr. Weider

if anything i think it is disrespectful that the nba doesn't honor james naismith, because of him tons of underprivileged black kids are millionaires, think of the lives he saved knowing that many of those guys would be drug dealers and gang bangers if not for the sport he created

i am now pissed off just thinking about it

it is downright disrespectful for him to be basically forgotten and unknown

That's actually not accurate there were competitive bodybuilding contests decades before Joe & Ben Weider , They've done a lot for the " sport " however it would exist in some form or another if they never entered the fray

1997 was the year that Arnold made some semi- disrespectful things about Yates.

But I think that Arnold was upset that Yates named Mentzer as his primary role model (along with Casey Viator and Bruce Lee)

Limb length has a lot to do with hitting crab shot right. Shorter guys with stubbier limbs tend to pull it off better
