Our health care system sucks. Insurance is a scam. The concept of limited liability brings on a false sense of security. The only way insurance companies make $$ is for you to pay premiums and for them to not pay out. They are not your good neighbor and they are not your friend.

Some coverage aspects are vague or misleading, but calling it a 'scam' makes no sense to me. In general, insurance policies are pretty clear on most coverages.
It's not perfect, but it's always better than starting a gofundme campaign.

I'm not familiar with American healthcare policies, but do you need an optional insurance to cover the treatment of cancer ???

Depends on what your insurance covers. Cancer treatments only kill you faster, but this is a completely different subject.

How old is he? Why get painful chemo/radiations treatments when you're 70+ yrs old? You've had your run, time to say fuck it. Load up on all the painkillers they give, maybe even grab some diesel off the street too and go out like a boss.

This is what happened to my Dad. Dad was 72, stage 4 bone, liver and kidney cancer. I had no stay because his fucking wife (my step mother) insisted he have it. He probably would've lived another year with no treatment and pain meds.

We have universal healthcare in Canada, which is great. Taxes are higher here than the US, but at least we get treated. The down-side is, a lot of people take advantage of the system who have no business being in the ER. My brother broke his arm in half when some fat kid jumped him in grade 2. My parents and him waited 6 hours for a doctor! But he DID get treated eventually, and we paid nothing out of pocket.
I understand the problem, at least pre-obamacare, in the US, is that people were rejected from insurance companies because of pre-existing conditions. Or their premiums were unrealistically high. I'm not sure what the situation is like over there now, but I'm guessing its not so great still as lots of people are still complaining.

there is one thing people forget though about our Canadian health care, in that they don't cover certain procedures that are available and lifesaving which they have elsewhere and there is a limit to how much treatment they give before they stop
also for example, if you have to have an organ replaced, you are covered, everything during your hospital stays and pre and post follow ups. However you are not covered for the $20,0000-50,000/year worth of anti-rejection meds you need to take the rest of your life.
There are gov't plans that help cover some of that, but not all.

The Dutch medical insurance system is still considered the best in the world. If a treatment has been proven to be succesful, insurance will pay for it. No matter what.
Costs lots money, of course, but that's a political choice, not a medical one....

No point in treating the cancer if it has metastasized to bones and vital organs, however bone cancer is especially painful and pain meds are vital to the quality of life at that point.
Additionally, pain medicine is a key tool in hospice care.
