Mods, feel free to move after six or seven responses. Looking at buying a good acoustic guitar for a beginner. Not looking for anything special, just a nice comfortable instrument. $300-$500 range if need be. Thanks.

Try craigslist. If you don't find a guitar at least you can get blown by a tranny.

Taylor makes a semi mini for 499. Just a little smaller than standard sized. Cool tone, easy to carry, fun all around. You'd need a snark tuner though
-
Gibson Hummingbird

Buy a used one from a "pro" who can also give you some sort of preview when buying the thing. Local guitarist Yngwie may have the best advice.

There are a plethora of quality guitars for beginners being built in China these days. One that comes to mind immediately is the Yamaha FG800. Solid spruce top, great playability.

What's the tuner run?

like 8 bucks on ebay. cute little clipon. everyone uses them now. They just feel the vibration from a guitar or bass and let you tune silently. Every musician in town uses them. you can tune during solos lol, i love them.

How old is the beginner? If below 13 years old I recommend a 3/4" size guitar to start with. The neck and frets are smaller and accommodate smaller hands.
Baby Taylor's are very nice. Around $250-300.

I've played an 3/4 for nearly all of my life. :D

they're not as badass thru a full PA system if you're in a rock band.
if it's just to learn, to get laid, to play a cute little duo, it's plenty.
get a dreadnaught takamine if you want to do the band thing. baby taylor is super fun.

They are fun, but not very practical for gigs though. When I'm home, my baby Taylor is always at arms reach. I also have a late 70's Rickenbacker 325 (like Lennon played).

Funny, I have one of those too.

my parker fly set to acoustic pickups sounds 10x better thru the PA, note for note. BUT when I'm playing solo acoustic gigs, there's just no bounce/ass/space filler like the takamine. It's awesome with the looper... play the chords, add a bassline, thump for the bottom drum... sounds like a full band.

Cool, but I never got into the delay/looper thing. Too old school I guess.

it helps dudes like me... mediocre singers but melodic solos for days :) I let the guitar sing all those pretty notes my johnny cash voice cannot reach.

Lol, I'm the beginner and am mid thirties. I'm 6'4 if that means anything for size/type of guitar.

ask kevin levrone if he has one for sale, you might even get it signed.

iphone and the GarageBand is more than enough for a noobie ::)

I have 2 of these. One for the guitar and bass I play...poorly.
I have the acooustic FG700S by Yamaha. Sounds decent, the action could be a little better...but great for $200. I picked it up on Craigsrisk for $110.
The funny thing about expensive instruments is so few will really benefit from great pick ups, etc. Buying gear is the easiest thing to do in music, playing well and consistently improving is the challenge.

The Pixar Cars guitar is great for beginners and advanced players alike and can be had for less than $30.
-
I would go for quality.
1. more fun/easier to play, better sound, etc. = motivation (also cheap gear sucks most of the time).
2. easier to maintain/learn/handle in most cases.
3. resale value if given up.
4. not yet
The Seagull guitar I mentioned earlier is a very good guitar for the money.
I don't know how they do it but speaking of sound they are far better than most guitars costing double the price or more.
Personally I own 2 Seagulls after playing all maybe 60 guitars in the store some of which were like 2-3000 euros, money didn't play a role back then.
The Seagulls I went for in the end were like 750 eur and the other like 650 eur only but sounded better by a wide margin somehow.

I have about 8 snarks. theyre everywhere. I usually keep a spare on all my mic stands. they last 80 hours but always get left on while playing.
I HATE buying gear. I have a sweet parker fly for guitar gigs, a takamine dreadnaught for solos/duos, and a musicman bass for bass work. I bought them all 5+ years ago and only use them at shows. outside of that, i have a few cheap backups, but am totally not a gear head. I use a 1x10 bass combo now, leaving the monster 4x10 in the garage. I run guitar direct, skipping the amp most nights. the older I get, the nicer it is to pack up quick at 2am.

Could pick up a Martin 100% solid wood for about $500 used. Sold 1 a couple years back, forget the model number.
-
Seagull (subsidiary of Godin Guitars) make a very good product for the price. You won't find a better value solid top acoustic on the market. Made in Canada too (as opposed to Mexico or some other dirt country), so that's a bonus.

Really, a full size? Was it stolen or a Martin knockoff? I've nvr seen a full size Martin in good condition sell for that cheap.
