The usual answer is 'nerve damage'. But how does lifting cause nerve damage? Nerves rubbing against dislocated tissues? Nerves 'burning out'? Getting snipped during a contraction?
Why does it affect some people more than others? The way they lift, or just inherent susceptibility? Does diet play a role?
How to avoid it?

Some of it doesn't apply to bodybuilders, but this is the best layman's article I've seen on it -

Nerve damage thing is just BS in alot of cases... Like what people said to explain RC. When it was mostly just age, muscle tears and general wear and tear.
Most of the time is just that, wear and tear. Muscles wear out. Micro tears and strains, beating up the muscle for decades eventually takes it toll.
Then there is the age thing. Cell renewal goes down and we just start to deteriorate at some point.

good article. makes a lot of sense. recovery and nutrition also seem to matter so much more at 40 than it did at 30.
