even bodybuilders who otherwise look pretty good into their 60s, 70s, get hit with the massive waist. anyone know why?
-
Two things:
- 1) Declining HGH levels...
- 2) They continue to eat as if they are still working out real heavy
Look at photo's of Marines taken during the first third of their time in...then compare with same person four years after getting out.
-
interesting... declining hgh? don't some attribute the growing gut of modern bbers to internal organ growth and visceral fat from increased HGH and insulin?
-
At the doses they use, yes...but with the doses most non-bodybuilders use the effect is less body fat.

3) metabolism slows down

i cant recall seeing that many bodybuilders in their 60s and 70s to have an opinion

Robby Robinson still has tight waist. Not inevitable.

Because of increasing insulin resistance as you age and have been eating excess foods for many years.
Because of the increased resistance of muscle cells to insulin, the pancreas produces more and more insulin after meals.
Excess insulin causes fat deposits around the waist, among other things.
Also, this resistance seems to be the cause of palumboism in the normal aging man-the insulin resistance allows less and less nutrients into the muscle.

I notice that older iron brothers became all ribcage and fairly wide hips, and laughable legs and arms.

Age is a guy.

Spine compression, over eating, age, etc.
MuscleCenter and Wes do still look very good though.

Not old, but i have been hitting legs and arms mostly, to beef them up, so i get some head start when i grow older, avoiding looking like a crabb early in my life.

Interesting point. Where does the thickening of this midsection come from, while still very lean?

Even on stage, you do look really good.
How's your back doing and what problems do/did you have?

lack of willpower. built up fecal matter. Push it out.
I eat oatmeal at least once a day. Usually twice. I avoid the evil white bread and flour usually.
Waist is down to 32 and I'm not even dieting yet.

i've learned to take advantage of working from home. small small meals all day. It's my 20th straight week of lifting 5x a day. Turning 40, it got my ass in gear. Study 2 hours a day. Lift, cardio, eat clean all the time. I still usually eat 1 small sweet or salty thing each day, if I skip the fries and never drink sugary drinks, I hardly notice it. turning 40 was a mother. I didn't tell anyone. I just got uber focused on excelling at everything.

Eating carbs makes you fat, especially sugars and starches, at any age.
-
Started happening to me after 35 or so. After that, you need to be extremely careful about not consuming excess calories/sugar.
It's all directly related to insulin resistance and declining T and GH levels.
-
The reason why the midsection expands with age is as you get older you need more air and you breath a bit faster so the midsection expands to accommodate this event.
-
The stomach is a muscle, and it loses it's elasticity just like any other muscle as you age.

The REAL answer. As we age, the space between out spinal discs compress, which essentially makes the upper torso collapse in on itself. It's sort of like an accordion. This results in everything pretty much getting squashed. NOW, when that happens our organs/intestions get pushed outward as the torso is compressed. THAT'S what gives the impression that our midsection's expand with age. The average man loses 1/4"-1/3" PER decade after 30 (the average woman loses 1/2") and while our vertebrae gets shorter, our midsection gets wider. You see this a lot in older men who appear to be wearing their pants really high, when in actuality, what's making them looking so high is that their upper torso is shorter than it once was and that's the illusion. You can also see it in guys who have had back surgery where their discs have been fused together, or discs have been removed. The late great Roddy Piper was a prime example. He was once a tall guy standing 6'1"-6'2", but due to serious back surgery where they removed a portion of his spine he was down to about 5'8"-5'9" before he died and his stomach appeared to be much larger. It's just that his intestines had less room in his shrunken torso so they had to expand outward.
