Title: Sonny SCHMIDT appreciation
Post by: Nether Animal on October 29, 2016, 05:32:25 AM
Sonny was amazing. He was older than most of his competition but he was always a threat. He did the Masters O for a while like Vince Taylor did.

Awesome RLS (Can't find a good pic though); his only weakness was the FDB.

Yeah, I put him in my top 5 in the other thread because I think his proportions were absolutely oustanding...

Sonny's best showing was at the Mr. Olympia 1991. He got 6th place, he should have been 3rd. He did an awesome, energetic posing routine that year to AC/DC's Thunderstruck.

He was amazing and underated. He trained exclusively at Golds (Worlds) gym in SD CA. Saw him just about everyday. I'll tell you, he had a physique that everyone would die for! Perfect shape, proportions, size, height, Quads, amazing calves, no oil in any body part! He was just so complete, from head to toe. And that's saying a lot considering at the time, It was home to Nasser, big Jim Quinn, Dave Fisher, Jean Paul Guilamme, Milos, and so many more. Not to mention all the female pros. Anyway, he was so quiet. Hardly said a word. Nicest guy you could meet.

Before he died, did he not serve time for selling coke?

If I remember right, Doherty had to convince them to let him out of prison due to medical because he was dying of his cancer.

This is exactly why he's in my top 5 of all time.  He had the 'lines' of people like Nubret and Leidlmeyer but with a little bit more mass.  I'm waiting for the next Australasian champion THB....

naw, he didn't have lines like the above mentioned. He looked good, great quads, decent back. Good lines, but ended up getting lost with the 90s guys who were tons better. Tevita (sp) would have been the next great Polynesian, but he had problems from the start, like losing his temper when he lost to Garrett Downing. And Tevita had way better lines and better abs than Sonny.

I'm not sure he completely disappeared amongst his peers - certainly not when he first started in the early '90s - top 6 mostly the first couple of years - snapping at the heels of Dorian at the beginning... (off to Google this Tevita chap now)

Tevita never gained traction after losing to Garrett Downing, and then later on winning his pro card. He was like a Polynesian Jamo Nezzar-great shape, never really got into shape, and over looked. Also, him throwing a fit and destroying his trophy got him black listed by the judges in the pros.

Wow Parker, you are nuts. Have never even heard of Tavita and your claim he had way better lines than Sonny. I just looked him up and you are smoking crack. Sonny was light years ahead of that guy in terms of development, symmetry, detail etc. And that is why most know who Sonny was and almost nobody knows who Tavita is. Sonny was on the Olympia stage and stood next to greats. What about Tavita? Please post a picture side by side with Sonny showing why he is supposedly better.

You are nuts!!

Totally agree, they are light years apart,  As I said previously Sonnys lines and structure with Yates mind you are looking at something special. There are hundreds of potential Tevitas at every gym in Hawaii samoa and tonga.

Yes, he was dealing cocaine

"Mr U arranged with Sonny Schmidt that the latter would travel to Mexico to deliver the large quantity of cash, and to make the arrangements for the sending of the cocaine to Australia in a package or packages addressed to fictitious addressees, using the UPS transport system.

Paying for the expenses of the trips of Mr U, the airline ticket for Sonny Schmidt to Mexico on 26 October 2000, and payment of most, if not all, of the cost of the cocaine, which was in the order of A$78,048.87;

On Friday 3 November 2000 in Mexico (Mexico time), two packages containing artefacts were placed in the UPS transport system in Mexico by a man called Victor. The packages contained nearly three kilograms of white powder. Later analysis revealed that the white powder comprised 1,933.4 grams of pure cocaine. The packages contained glass candles with wax and Mexican handicrafts and artefacts, and were addressed to two false addresses in Carlton and Footscray.

Later that evening, Mr U and the Schmidt brothers were also arrested and charged with being knowingly concerned in the importation of a prohibited import into Australia. The prisoner was not arrested. On 1 December 2000 the prisoner had a frank and open discussion with the registered informer, the drug trafficker, and, unbeknown to him, the conversation was recorded. It is indeed a damning conversation and amounts to a confession by the prisoner of his total involvement in all the arrangements of this importation.

The brothers Sonny and Pale Schmidt pleaded guilty. Ron Cassar was found guilty of the count of being knowingly concerned in the importation. The learned County Court judge sentenced Mr Cassar to a period of six years imprisonment and fixed a non-parole period of four years. He appealed the sentence and the appeal was dismissed. Sonny Schmidt was sentenced to a period of three years, to be released after serving 18 months subject to him entering into an undertaking. With respect to Pale Schmidt, he was sentenced on the Commonwealth matters to two years imprisonment but the sentence was suspended. "
