I scored high enough for admission to one of the top three HS in NYC.  Even in elementary and jr. high we were segregated by academic performance.  I don’t know if NYC still does that, but I do know that my kids attending public school in CA are not segregated academically.  They all have experiences with one or more students disrupting classes; in fact, multiple instances of students attacking teachers – and that’s all it takes to drag down the entire class.  I can only vaguely recall one student mouthing off to the HS music teacher.
