It's value is based on its scarcity and its scarcity is based on a degenerative "mining" algorithm that was written by Satoshi originally. People smarter than me have looked at the algo and determined that it is legit, but even a tiny weakness could be exploited to effectively blow the scarcity-value all to hell and any investment in BTC would be lost.
Even being in the biz (or maybe BECAUSE I am in the biz), I am still skeptical of BTC as anything other than a very short term anonymous storage of value. I am in and immediately out as necessary.

I find Bitcoin to be fascinating, even though I never invested in it. It has an advantage over many of the other crypto currencies because of its widespread use.
-
How do you even use it? It's not like you can go to the store and buy bread with it, right?

how does it hold it value? based on 01010101 instead of gold etc?

The laws of supply and demand. As long as supply is low and there is demand, the price curve adjusts. Upset either and you'll get wild fluctuations in price.

Chinese just implemented capital controls over bitcoin. US government will do the same thing.
BTW, My local grocery store does not take bitcoin... neither does any other store I shop at. Bitcoin is nothing more than a tech nerds wet dream. Better cash them all in now before the price crashes again.

It's not hard to crack but just takes a lot of computing power and time. Those that got in early made real cash then the limit kicked in. I believe in a few more years all of the bitcoin will be mined and none left to gather. Now the computing cost vs what you get isn't worth it. A bunch of data center guys with unused machines were able to clean up years ago.

Ridiculous. Parabola/panic buying NEVER ends well.
Current price $1,166.44

As soon as you define its value in terms of traditional currency it's a dead end idea. The whole point was for bitcoin to be an online thing. Once people decide it's worth x dollars then we all just might as well use dollars online.

http://www.bitcoinnotbombs.com/bitcoin-vs-the-nsas-quantum-computer/
Things like this keep me out for now. Could a working quantum computer destroy BTC? It kinda comes down to whether or not somebody devises a quantum algorithm to crack SHA-256. Not trivial, but not impossible. The entirety of the BTC rests on the integrity of one single hashing algorithm.

They had to pick an encryption level that is strong but also doesn't take hours to unlock if you have the key. Sure you can lock something down to where it's impossible to hack but then it's not practical or useful to anyone. Computing will eventually solve this and bitcoin will just go away. People realized, why hack bitcoin when you can just hack the exchanges. A lot easier.

i'm doing fine

I think it's more important to focus on the long-term potential of bitcoin as either digital gold or a seamless transaction system than price swings. The aforementioned is why the price has increased since inception and there are encouraging signs of genuine technical progress soon.
-
Get ready for a wild ride if you're just getting into BTC now. If you buy, HODL! lol
Don't worry if it drops. If you've purchased BTC in the last few years there would have been ups and downs, but it's continually moved up and will continue to do so. Buy. Hold. Forget about it.

$885... and going down!

Bitcoin is closing in on its all-time high
Buying early on in US trade has run bitcoin up 1.4%, or almost $16, to $1,123 a coin. Wednesday's bid has the cryptocurrency higher for a ninth straight session and threatening its all-time high of about $1,161.88.
The recent strength in bitcoin comes amid speculation the Securities and Exchange Commission will approve at least one of the three proposed bitcoin-focused exchange-traded funds despite analyst concerns that none will be approved.
Bitcoin has soared more than 40% since bottoming out on January 11 following word that China was going to begin cracking down on trading of the cryptocurrency. That rally has come despite news that China's largest exchanges would begin charging a flat fee of 0.2% on all transactions and that two of China's largest bitcoin exchanges were blocking withdrawals.
For the year, bitcoin is up about 18%.

Merely digital electrons in outer space. No electricity/internet = no bitcoin.
I've theorized for some time now that bitcoin is a government creation... a beta test for a global digital fiat currency... fully traceable and controlled. This is why governments have not banned it. Do you honestly believe any government would allow something to exist that competes with their physical fiat currency?.. of course not. Governments hate cash and want to do away with it because they cannot tax, track and control all transactions. This block chain nonsense is just a fairy tale to make people believe bitcoin is non-traceable, anti-banker and anti-government... when in reality it's exactly the opposite. All digital currency is a governments wet dream... any dissenters or law breakers funds can essentially be frozen. Bitcoin devotees have been completely fooled.

Bitcoin busts out to an all-time high
Bitcoin is trading at a record high. Buying on Thursday has the cryptocurrency up 3%, or $33.37, to $1162.68 a coin, and on track for its 10th straight day of gains. Its previous all-time high of $1,161.88 was set on January 5.
Buyers have been piling into bitcoin in anticipation the US Securities and Exchange Commission will approve at least one of the three proposed bitcoin-focused exchange-traded funds by a March 11 deadline. Analysts have warned that none will be approved.
The current rally in bitcoin has run the price up more than 17% and has been the latest chapter in a volatile start to the year. Bitcoin surged more than 20% in the first week of 2017 amid heavy buying interest from China. Then, the price crashed 35% amid fears China was going to crack down on trading.
After bottoming out near $750 a coin, the cryptocurrency rallied despite news that China's largest exchanges would begin charging a flat fee of 0.2% on all transactions and that two of China's largest bitcoin exchanges were blocking withdrawals.

I'm just saying that anyone who's buying it should hold it.
With guys like Kim Dotcom putting their clout behind it, it's definitely something of interest. It's shaking things up for sure. And don't forget about the darknet too...

For a trade?... sure, just make sure to sell at the top.
IMO, bitcoin is a beta test for a global digital fiat currency. TPTB will eventually ban cash altogether.
Silver is a much better play at it's current level... $18.30. Very undervalued.
