Title: Have you ever tried a TRUE Keto diet?
Post by: tom joad on December 22, 2016, 08:18:41 AM
I'm not talking about a Low Carb High Protein diet where you eat your quality protein and complement it with a few low carb veggies and some healthy fats (avocados, almonds, good oils ...)

But rather, a true Keto diet that emphasizes FAT so that your Macro breakdown is something like: 5% Carbs, 20-25% Protein, and 70-75% Fat.

And to achieve about 3/4 of your diet being Fat, you have the green light to pretty much go to town (while keeping an eye on overall calories) on bacon, butter, cheese, real mayo, heavy creams etc. ... stuff that those living the healthy, fitness or bodybuilding lifestyle generally minimize or avoid when trying to lose (or not gain) body fat.

Did it work for you?

i did a real keto diet, where some people said to eat hi fat, mod protein amd dont worry about calories...

8 weeks later my wife was like, wtf i thought u were dieting? you look like shit"

went back to eating healthy and monitoring caloric intake and look great (for me)

Yep, did it for about a year in 2014. Worked great for me. In fact, I'm doing it now again.
I ate about 70% fats, 20%-25% protein.
I think for it to work your body needs to adjust to the diet and you have to have a certain body type. And don't forget that calories still count lol. Why would anyone think keto would make you lose fat if you're eating 8,000cals?? makes no sense. Eat within your caloric needs and you'll feel full and energized.

Its not hard to overeat when you're a fatass  ;D
Lord knows I can. But Keto gives me a feeling of satiety carb-based diets just can't.
In any case, I'm an advocate of the diet for anyone who has a big appetite.

Totally forgot to mention that. Its the easiest diet to follow that requires very little preparation/cooking. Cook up some meat and fish, and the rest is ready to eat  (from green veg to nuts to oils)

There is absolutely no reason to go that low, the low carbs high protein diet that you first  mention is more than enough to get you super shredded I was on that low carb diet for 4 months and not only did i get shredded but I got more insulin sensitive now I am eating high carbs and my body is handling it very well in the past i would be more bloated now I am a lot leaner on high carbs.

Lots of people have been doing it for years, in fact there are some who do nothing but steaks and ground beef and water.

My body responds incredibly well to ground bison and green veggies, for when I need to get into top shape in a short period of time.  Don't know exactly what it is about ground bison.  I've tried going with extra lean ground beef because it's considerably cheaper, but bison just has an anabolic effect on my body and I get into shape very fast eating it, along with greens such as broccoli, spinach, etc.

Its not for everyone. But there are those who do it right and see great results. Its a diet like any other. It will work for some and it won't for others, just gotta find what works for you.

I've done both..the bodybuilding  (Palumbo) keto (which really isnt keto...and a true keto where fats made up 75%, protein 20%, carbs 5%..its definitely a great diet for maximum fat loss, it will get you shredded and fast, but if you're any kind of athlete doing anything endurance related definitely not for you..its a great diet for a person who isnt very active just wants to train and stay effortlessly lean i recommend it. Not the best for muscle building,  but if i was a prep coach i would probably put every woman client i had on it.

Agreed, also very effective if you know when to incorporate it, throw it into a prep for a week or two..lay off the cardio and it can do wonders.

my girlfriend does it, she absolutely loves it. if you're a pothead\cant control yourself around sweets it's eliminates any chance of you gorging and for some reason after about a month into it all she really craves is red meat.

How did you reach 75% of your keto diet being FATS?
That's what i'm most curious about.
I don't think one can get to 75% with just some daily omega 3 eggs + the fat from meats + an avocado + good oil on veggies (fish/flax/olive/macadamia nut ... whatever) + a few almonds scattered in ...
And I don't imagine you indulged in lots of bacon, butter, cheese, mayo, heavy creams etc. ... did you?

Avocados, mct oil, bacon, coconut oil, mac nut oil,  true keto not much nuts involved,  fatty meats, grass fed butter, ghea,..lots of bullet proof coffee

at 20 percent protein, say if you're dieting on 1800 calories that's only 90 grams protein per day. I've been curious but feel like this would reduce muscle mass (can't say for sure because I've never tried it though). Has anyone here tried keto with less than 100 grams of protein per day for several weeks in a row and maintained strength in the gym and muscle size?

Yep. Didn't reduce anything for me. Fats are muscle sparing. Eat enough fats and your muscle will be fine. I ate between 80g - 100g protein about 2 months out from my comp and had no issues.
If you also look at clinical research, it says the same. Keep carbs super low, fats high, and protein moderate, and you'll be fine. You don't need 300g protein to build/keep muscle. You just need enough aminos including leucine to complete muscle protein synthesis, which is a minimum of 50g/day. Of course, you'll want more than 50g, especially in the off-season. But precontest you'll be fine with 100g/day if you're eating enough fats (which should make up the rest of your nutrition with some leafy greens thrown in).

thanks for the info, maybe I'll try it out.

FWIW there was one study where sedentary 170 lb guys actually lost some muscle eating 47 g protein per day even though they had a calorie surplus with fats and Carbs, they also gained muscle at 140 g protein when under the same calorie excess but with a bit less fat and Carbs.  So that muscle maintaining protein about for them would be somewhere between 47 and 140.

Read your question and use your common sense do you really think a person can be on 1800 calories 90 grams of protein per day for several weeks in a row and not lose some strength and muscle size come on man your body is human.

Offseason I will eat upwards of 250g of protein and fats will be adjusted to keep calories around 3000/day. So I do see the merit of eating plenty of protein to put on muscle. Its just not as important as people make it out to be when dieting down. When calories have to go low enough, I would rather consume more fat to keep satiety high, and enough protein to keep catabolism at bay.

Did it work for you?

No.

I had no gas in the tank at all.  Training went to shit.  Mood was even more foul than usual.  I almost butchered a family of 8 with an axe right there on their picnic blanket just for their bowl of pasta.  Anyone who can juice up and keto and not end up in jail is a nicer person than I.
