Do it in a power rack with safety's set...

dumbbell presses.

Some people are morons and they deserve to get hurt, especially if they use a thumbless grip.
At 50, I'm glad I'm still able to bench. However, I never go below 5 reps anymore... too risky. I never used a rack either.

use chalk.

Also 50 here... The few rare times a year I max out, its in the rack, safety bars in place.
And also like you, know my limits and go for 5-8 reps on most sets. And always use a normal grip (thumb over bar).
And yes, d-bells are also a very good choice...

I never max out on a bench for a reason

Ban necks.

I haven't benched in years. Very few people can get to their 50's due to bad shoulders and still bench. I think the lift his horrible for the shoulder joint. Much better for strength is a clean and press. Bracing your back on a bed and pushing a weight from an inflated arched chest is first going to contribute to stiff inflexible joints then injury.
-
It said he had watching on. Sounds like all they were doing was watching.

It may not be the bench that is screwing up your shoulders, it could be a pro inflammatory diet. I laughed at this myself, but eliminated certain food groups I have sensitivities to and I can bench now with no issues.

No video of this moron?

I was wondering about this myself since most of the time when I go on Keto diets my joints and injuries seem to get better. What foods did you eliminate?

gluten. It gets a bad rap like it's a fad but not with me.

when i turned 50 i started using the powetec bench for safety plus a better ROM. lost my ego years ago..
-
sounds like a wise decision

Agreed. One of the most important piece of Equipment a gym can have imo.
Alot of gyms dont even have a powerrack here. But tons of useless machines... :-\
-
Accidents can and do happen. I am also 50 and use a thumbless grip, I routinely go to 405 but I have a spotter who knows what he is doing and I use a rack as often as possible. The only reason I go thumbless is because my shoulders hurt too much to use a wrap around grip- taking a risk I know .... but I know guys who have always benched thumbless- for decades- and never had a problem. If you chalk up, squeeze the bar tight and know your limitations, you can minimize the risk- but yes, it's still there

I like watching gym accidents
(Only bruised egos ;D )

wait it 315 heavy?
-
Thumbless grip.
-
Phil is smart cause he does 5 plates on hammer strength
-
wait it 315 heavy?
Forgot most getbiggers can do 405 for 15 reps with ease
Most people in any gyms can't rep 315 or do a max rep
-
He had spotters. They must have been picking their noses and not paying attention or they would have caught the bar before it fell on the poor guy's neck and killed him. Hope they feel like shit.
-
Thumbless grip.
Aye, if the spotters were there and they missed it, you have to think he dropped it when he wasn't in the lift portion, which does suggest thumbless grip.
It also suggests maybe a combination of bent bar that pulled out of his hands and/or his incapacity to handle the weight (ie, not controlled reps).
Whenever a thread like this appears, the anti-benchers come out in droves, which is fair enough but the truth is that benching isn't bad if you are built to do it and if you've been lifting for even a few years, you will know whether you are.
I am built to do so and I handled 315+ every week last year, often going for big singles for me (plenty of failures).. feel fine, zero injuries, nothing. Never felt unsafe. Failed 4 plates a couple of times, no problem. Have been doing that for years, now.
Like I say, you either have it or you do not. I do not have steroid inflated strength, though, if that counts. Not punching above my weight.
-
Thumbless grip.
I teach otherwise but I've been using a thumbless (false) grip ever since I can remember. I've tried wrapping my thumbs (just last week as a matter of fact) and had a hard time. Thank God I've never lost a load.

I ever tell the story of when I found a guy dead for a "suicide by bench press"?... In prison? (I didnt tell , but it lead to the removal of the "weight/exercise rooms" in individual good unit's
surprisingly no....
