Looking for a crime drama or historical fiction.
Any ideas?
Last three me and my lady watched were,
Justfied
Narcos
Peaky Blinders{Thanks Grape!}
Right now I'm watching Vikings and I'll watch the first episode of Seal Team 6 but they are only once a week.
I'm also looking forwards to the last season of Black Sails.

Have you watched both seasons of Narcos? Bosch on Amazon Prime is real good. Humans is also a good series, season 2 is starting soon. if you haven't watch Westworld give that a try.

So, because of Tom Hardy, I was really amped for this.
Reviews have been very mediocre though.
Going to start it tonight.
Don't think he can binge this though - it's new.
Other suggestions:
Mr. Robot
Shameless
Hannibal
BSG reboot
House of Cards

Reviewers were given the first three episodes. Gist was that if you are interested after the 1st, you'll probably like it....if not, it won't get better.

its quite subtle
but he has that brooding danger and jonathyn price as the bad guy is phenomenal
i prefer this to the super hero massive explosion style that everything else seems to have nowadays
-
Celebrity Apprentice
-
Assuming you've enjoyed the shows you've listed then Deadwood and Boardwalk Empire will be right up your street
-
Yeh
And Rome, Oz, Spartacus, Penny Dreadful, Lucifer, Stranger Things and Wayward Pines will be right up your chimney.
-
Planet Earth 2 out yet?
-
There are a hell of a lot of great TV shows now but DOWNTON ABBEy in my opinion is among the best of the best if you have an historical interest.

I agree with this 100%.
Some superhero TV stuff has been good - Jessica Jones, but other stuff like Daredevil started out cool but went to complete shit.
I'm pretty sure I'll like Taboo.
-
tons of good tv shows out there now cant even keep up
spartacus was great, sex, violence, naked men and women, well suited for the schmoes of get big
boardwalk empire i really liked, the first three seasons were great.

Agree with daredevil, although when the punisher showed up he stole the show. I've never even really cared for the Punisher character before but can't wait for his own series.
Jessica Jones started well, and david tennent was great as Kilgrave/purple man although underused. The characters all got annoying towards the end. All getting in each others way. And the biggest plot hole of the lot. How could no one figure out that ripping out kilgroves voice box would have put a stop to him.

I'll give you the Punisher - I did like him. It's the supporting cast I really didn't care for.

You could be right as I was thinking the same thing. I don't smoke anymore but it would probably be more entertaining if I did. Still, good show.
-
I only binge watch. Of the shows not mentioned, Banshee is very good.
Very hot naked chicks and a ton of violence.
-
Watch banshee on showtime.best show ever.
-
I second the Mr. Robot endorsement.
1st season was good. 2nd got stuck in the mud. I quit.
-
YEP! GOLIATH was a great first season series but I was a bit disappointed at the ending of the final episode of season one and I do think that they could have written a more interesting court scene instead of the heart attack.
Is there a season two yet?
-
Also watch Banshee, Vikings and Black Sails.

Was just gonna say this. I always avoided it coz I didnt like the look James spader has in it, crazy! Shouldn't have judged a book by its cover, great fast paced entertainment.

I really enjoyed Lilyhammer.
-
Deadwood is my favorite series of all time.
11-22-63 was my favorite short series of 2016.
Quarry is a very good neo noir series, but you need to let it develop a bit.
Boardwalk Empire was great.
The Australian series Underbelly was great to very good for the first 3 or 4 years. You can see a sample here -
&index=13 .
The BBC series Luther is a very good quick one.
Gomorrah is a great Italian series in the vein of The Sopranos. It just started rebroadcasting on American Tv (Sundance), but you can find the first 3 seasons on Putlockers, etc.....
The Corner from HBO was like a proto The Wire, you might like it. You can see the episodes here -
www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Paz0ajIxzI .
Mad Men is great, I'd recommend block viewing though, never found it to be a good casual show because the plots are so interwoven.
Oz was fun if you've never seen it.
Lilyhammer was a fun, and quirky series, once you give it a chance.
Ray Donovan is very good, but the last season left a good amount to be desired.
-
I really enjoyed Lilyhammer.
Lilyhammer was awesome... Stunt, not sure yet on a Season 2 of Goliath...
-
Thanks everybody.
Underbelly looks good and I can get it on Amazon
I am also going to watch Deadwood.I don't know why I never watched it before.
Last night the ending of Vikings was brutal!
Seal team 6 on the History channel looked it could be a good series but a bit predictable.
-
I second Gomorrah. Great series and not shy about bumping off main characters.

i won't openly admit to not knowing how to make this damn remote work but it's pretty damn complicated although my five year old grandkid will grab it and make every electronic gadget in the house work easily.
SO I seldom watch anything on the TV but I do know how to turn on a Kindle Fire so I watch the new AMAZON TV series or movies whenever possible. (Watching CREED at present.)
Here are the free TV series I get because of my Prime Membership ($100/yr)

MOZART IN THE JUNGLE ????

So true! Though I was gifted a boxed DVD set of the original TV show, THE PRISONER, staring Patrick McGoohan, and I did binge watch that!
-
Good call on The Night Of...
Is the series supposed to continue?
-
Is the series supposed to continue?
Maybe, but probably not. It was designed as a one season only show, but if someone comes up with a new story line they could bring it back. True Detective has a similar thing going on, officially probably ended, but with the possiblity of coming back at a later date.
-
I managed to watch the entire first season of MR. ROBOT and like it a lot.
But once you know the 'gimmick' I can't see how Season 2 would continue to be interesting, so I did not watch the 2nd season.
Is the 2nd season as good or as interesting as the first?

if this thread continues stunt movie will spoil ever series there is.
talking about endings, how this and that disappointed him etc etc
somehow he mustve mistaken this thread, its not about him talking about his experience with others who watches the same series
thats not it at all
this is about people who never, ever, saw a single episode and wants tips on series that may be worth watching and from that follows you dont tell ANYTHING about whats gonna happen in that tv-series.
maybe he works for the russians? russian hackers threaten to spoil american tv-series.
it made the news.

I understand the entertainment factor and using it to pass time, or fall asleep to, but people who get all hyped/addicted to these garbage tv shows are wasting precious time. You life goes by too fast to waste time on something that isn't even real... total nonsense.

I loved season 1 of Narcos. 2 episodes in season 2 and I've lost interest.
A lot of people raved about Stranger Things. I tried to watch but hate shows with lead kid actors.

Narcos was not really for me.

The Wire.
Five seasons, watch it straight through. Assuming you've already banked Sopranos, Rescue Me, Breaking Bad, Fargo, and Better Call Saul, the best shows ever.
Anyone wanna recommend either House of Cards, Mad Men, Deadwood, Hell on Wheels, or Man in the High Castle? All available, what's my next move?

I paid $15 to have my tv hebrew-rigged to get HBO so i could watch The Wire in prison (Cat House was icing on the cake). Probably in my top 3 fav tv series with Seinfeld & Breaking Bad.

Yeah, sadly, I was watching the euro feed, so I've already seen it. Although I might just do it again.

I'd go Deadwood or Mad Men. Deadwood is my favorite series of all time. Masterly filmed, great stories, and wonderful acting. One could even draw a lot of parallels between The Wire and Deadwood without much trouble. Very, very strong.
Mad Men is great too, but a totally different feel. You'll probably do best to watch it in blocks, as there are lots of small threads that run through all seasons. I tried being a casual viewer of it years ago, and it didn't work. Then years later, I did many of the seasons in one giant block, and it all fell into place.
I'd maybe go Mad Men, then Deadwood, if you're coming off The Wire, as the feel will be different. Mad Men is less dark.
Have you tried Boardwalk Empire yet ?
-

What I liked about Boardwalk Empire is how they make alot of winks about how the whole political system is rigged

Not yet. I watched the first two seasons, then it got lost in the shuffle. I'll probably do a bunch of seasons in a row at some point.

Yeah, I liked it quite a bit. I think Deadwood is a notch above, but it's a very good show. Most of the folks I've known that don't like it are younger kids that needed action every episode. The show has its slow moments, but they always pay off. They also didn't drag it out too long, it wraps up nicely.

Also for the guys that liked The Wire, you could try The Corner. It was from the same guys, and it was sort of a tester for the feel of that show. It's a short series that runs a few episodes (6), and I don't think HBO runs it anymore, but you can find it on youtube, albeit in english with french subtitles -

I'm a binge reader
I think the Internet's ruined my capacity for any reading "binge." Attention span sucks anymore, probably need to back away from serving-size articles and such.
Was getting better, too - once read over 300 pages of a Bosch novel (Connelly) in a day, which was way unusual. But now I'm stuck on p. 214 of a rock biography that I've had for months. Any tips for a wannabe speedreader, Clav?

Oh, man, too much to list. Mainly annoyed at my fiction speed/retention; I expect to go slow with nonfiction, more to consider.
How many pages will you normally read in a sitting?

If it's a good book a couple of hundred.I've read 400-500 page books in a couple of days plenty of times.
you?
Where I live there is a community pool.it's been a running joke for years that with kids playing and splashing and adults having conversations that I can sit in my lawn chair and be in such a zone with a book that people will call my name and I'll have no idea they are talking to me.

Do you retain info pretty well?
I've always been a somewhat distracted reader. But when I started Connelly's Bosch series a few years back, I devoured chapters faster than ever (300 was a daily record). Not sure if it was the material or my focus at the time, but it didn't last long. Wish I could read a few books a week; so many on my list.

More then in real life ;D
I can read a book in a series then read a bunch of other books on different subjects,go back to the series pick up the next book and know right where I left off in terms of characters, plot, and continuation of the story.
Usually what happens is a find a book I like then end up reading a bunch in the same genre.
Right now I'm reading about Vikings.

Strategy-wise, I find I do best when I focus on the center of sentences and trace along with a finger. Any tips on technique?
Present list:
Ham on Rye (Bukowski)
Ask the Dust (Fante)
East of Eden (Steinbeck)
Tapping the Source (Kem Nunn)
ClavinH (See what I did?)
All AFTER I finish this pretentious, New-Agey Maynard James Keenan bio. Very much want to complete a '100 Before You Die' list of classics, but I'm too damn slow and distracted.

Try to read with no noise around you to start like a quiet room by yourself with no TV on.
No proof but I've always felt you could read faster if you don't use your fingers.
