I'd not paid much attention to the whole VR thing until the other week when I was having dinner with my dad who works for a company that works on VR stuff and he was telling all about the different possibilities of VR. Since then I've been looking into it, since I love massively immersive experiences where you can just get lost for hours (LSD haha).
I've been looking into this company that's going to launch a satellite this summer that will live stream 4k 360 degree video for VR use. Have a couple drinks or a joint, throw on some real chill spacy tunes and zone out in actual space with a VR headset. Sounds fucking awesome.
So I'm wondering if any getbiggers on here have experience with any VR gear?
-
no.
but i have been thinking about experiencing reality more, maybe go out in the mountains with a backpack.

No.

Too many tech toys, distractions and diversions.
Concentrate on real activities.
Bunch of feminized twinks and lazy fat fucks.

No I am not interested in it. VR is for losers like you.

Nah, I do like "reality" though, which we dont get anymore because of fake news and the masses who believe it...
-

Yes, but its a pain to get it up and running.

If you want a space like atmosphere you can already get that in a bunch of VR stuff. Not based on a real camera, of course - but you can very easily be standing in the middle of space with galaxy and nebulae all around you and yes, it is fucking excellent and works pretty well with music. Things like virtual desktop give you that. If you want something even crazier, you can do the same (stand in space) whilst drawing in google tilt brush. There is an apollo experience that I've bought but not played, too.
That is one application that VR is already essentially perfect for.
Also note that 360 degree video does not have depth, which is 95% of why VR is amazing. Just having shit come at you is truly bizarre.
Now, moving on, say you want to play VR version of regular game.. for instance Skyrim - whoa partner.. the problem of movement rears its ugly head - and you should be educated about VR movement before you buy into VR because we are in the infancy of the truly usable VR. I mean, it isn't a joke any more - it really is fantastic. With caveats.
The major caveat is that a lot of people (probably the majority, I'd say) struggle with the intensity of movement in VR. Just press a controller forward a little and you'll feel one of the most bizarre feelings you will ever encounter. A feeling of instant, utter unease. Your brain didn't feel any motion, yet the eyes say you moved. What happens? You get sick. The unease turns to straight up sickness and you stop. Your brain forces you towards sickness and eventual vomiting (if you persist super long) because it believes it has been poisoned (due to the disparity in senses).
...So most VR games centre around either you being the centre of the game (ie, in a wave shooter - which is like 70% of all software coming out) or you use a warp system (ie, you click and it shows a warp marker, which you move around to your target position and then you move). Very few VR games ask you to move without a warp because those games don't make any money because the first comments are always MAKES ME SICK and it goes downhill from there.
Very few people play racing games in VR.
That rubs out a fair bit of what people want from VR - the idea that they will be in world of warcraft or whatever.. it's very cute, but the movement issue is significant.
Buy a HTC Vive if you're going to buy something. It is much much better than the alternatives. When you actually move, whilst moving in VR, you never suffer any issues with sickness.

The first few games were short. I liked Rush of Blood and the Batman game but RE7 is insane and easily the best VR game yet since they have numerous comfort settings you can choose. Also heard about the Spiderman VR game coming out soon as well. it's only going to get better.

As with video games, VR is for people who can't deal with Literal Reality.

Maybe the next Elder Scrolls. :-\
This will be unreal when it happens and they get all the bugs worked out. I won't leave the house.

I'd say most of today's competitors are playing pretend, to the point that a large number of them are down right delusional, for ever stepping on a stage, the way they look.

I have played with some VR stuff. PS4, Oculus, HTV Vive. I'm not super into most of it myself.
We are doing a lot of interesting things internally that I can't really talk about that are related to VR and other stuff, but I'm more of the mindset that until I can feel like I'm in a holodeck ala Star Trek I won't really want to deal with it.
It's good to move the technology forward though and that doesn't happen over night.
I just wonder if it doesn't end up similar to the whole "3D" thing. 3D was a big thing a few years ago and it really didn't go anywhere.

Yeah, we had a thing here in Sweden in 1983 called TV-Piraterna. 3D was a big thing back then.
We all sat with 3D-glasses and watched this 3D Pirate-TV

Went and got it earlier, RE7 that is, fucking Wow. I've had my hand sawn off already, I don't know if that's meant to happen but some girl with a chainsaw got me

Check out Microsoft's HOLOLENS (Mixed Reality). At $3,000 to $5,000 per .. to appears that it will be more for business use.
Look for some videos on that site or on Youtube if you want to see something really fascinating.

So how immersive is it exactly is what I'm wondering? Has the technology advanced far enough so as to get you lost in space so to speak?

I can only speak for the ps4 vr and the for first generation commercial vr its amazing for the low enough price point. Resident Evil 7 should be experienced whether you like games or not

Just to be clear, hololens has a small field of vision. It is NOT close to consumer ready.
Augmented reality, done well is a long, long time away.
Much longer than virtual reality.
So how immersive is it exactly is what I'm wondering? Has the technology advanced far enough so as to get you lost in space so to speak?
The technology is advanced enough - the software is something that is a hit and miss and rarely engages you for hours on end. That generally works out okay because you're not going to spend hours in VR, generally. If you live in a warm climate, it's pretty hot under the headset and basically, it does have a mild druglike effect in that you can feel a little oddness, coming back to reality after a long session.
The thing you're going to realise as soon as you get into VR is that depth makes everything much much better. It's really hard not to baulk when shit comes at you in VR. Horror is an absolute fucking nightmare to play. It's always the same when I put people into a horror wave shooter for the first time. Bravado up until the headset goes on and then "oh.." and the fun begins.
I have played with some VR stuff. PS4, Oculus, HTV Vive. I'm not super into most of it myself.
I just wonder if it doesn't end up similar to the whole "3D" thing. 3D was a big thing a few years ago and it really didn't go anywhere.
No offence, but if you're still wondering about it being like 3D movies, then I submit you haven't played with it all that much.
I mean, my bullshit detector was starting to go off when you said you wanted the holodeck and you claim to have used the vive (which has a huge holodeck vibe that is only restricted by room size).

You can have a real life experience of outerspace by strapping a plastic bag tightly over your head.

VR as it presently stands is pretty dam immersive , but there are a handful on new "VR" developments underway that appear to be taking a broad leap into the future.
One seemingly impressive one is presently being developed under the 'guidance' of George Lucas.
The big breakthrough at present is the development of the head-set that is totally wireless that can bit-map your living room and everything in it and to visually turn your furniture into something appropriate in accordance with the VR or the AR or the yada yada yada program.
That will allow you to walk within the VR, etc. game without tripping over your furniture or the cat or possibly even your wife.
Extra wives may even be 'installed' for Howard and other GetBiggers under similar circumstances.
ROCKET... Thanks for the info you posted above. I read it AFTER SUBMITTING THIS POST.

I did mention George Lucas in the above post but that was prior to reading the attached ...

I am a virtuous person living reality to what I believe is its fullest.
Does it count?
-
NOPE..... unless you are passionately involved with both ,,,, the reality of your own existence and the reality of another existence that is way more interesting and enjoyable.
Or something like that.

Falcon discovered vr like he discovered secret of electricity before anyone else

Resident Evil is just amazing, it's like being in a texas chainsaw massacre film. I can only imagine grand theft auto on this ps4 vr in a few years
-
Since the VR hardware (headset, etc.) will go through vast improvements within the next 24 months, I decided to go the cheap route and purchased an Alcatel Idol 4 and the VR head-set that comes with it for a little more than $200.
I realize that it is nothing like the Oculus or the other $500+ gear but I'll hold off on the better equipment until this VR business gets on its own two feet when we can all decide which VR equipment is the best to buy.
Don't forget that the not too distant future will also offer Augmented Reality and another whose name I have forgottn that offers both VR and AR.
Plus top companies are presently developing VR accessories such as hand gloves and other 'wearables' that will add the sense to TOUCH to any VR app you want to get involved in.
Right now we are just seeing the very tip-top of the VR iceberg with a good number unsinkable ships on the horizon.

That's who is going be buying the majority of this stuff.

The main thing I hate about the PS4 VR is the long cable attached that is pretty heavy and pulls down on the glasses and also gets in the way a lot. I guess there's so much content being passed through that bluetooth wouldn't be powerful enough to handle it.
The way motion works in VR is key. People get sick when the POV just moves to quickly. When it is a smooth transition and moves with your eyes then it's okay. I think they call it snap to view or something which is annoying.
-
EL, I have yet to use a PS 4 VR set but there are numerous ways to alleviate that hanging cord problem by hanging it from your ceiling which I thought was pretty impractical.
If interested .... there are few good YOUTUBE videos that describe the best solution.
Intel is about to release a cordless head-set in which eveything that is needed is built into the head-set itself.

I've been able to handle VR in short bursts, maybe 20-30 minutes. It does get hot and sweaty under the headset so I have a fan blowing on me at full speed to cool things down.

-
RESIDUE ...You said, " ..... the "realer" it gets, the closer we get to someone literally being scared to death!"
That is a strong possibility. I've seen a couple of videos which showed the physical reaction oF VR players while walking through a house of horror and it did appear that it definitely gave them a scare sufficient enough to cause an older person a heart attack.
Off track here a bit but .... years ago there was a French movie playing throughout the US called DIABOLIQUE (the original movie of that name) and the big horror scene in that movie did cause a couple of heart attacks the first week it was shown.
Following those incidents they always had an ambulance waiting outside the theater.
And they did advertise that it was scarrie enough to cause heart attacks ... which was a great form of advertisement because it was held over for a few additional months and sold out at every showing.
But see it today and you wouldn't even piss your knickers.
