The Falcons didn't sit on the ball. They kept chucking it down the field. When they weren't, Freeman was taking short dumpoffs and ripping off 40-yard runs.
BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE SAT ON THE BALL with 3:57 to go, after Jones' catch at the Pats' 23. Three runs and kick a FG if you don't convert or score and you're up at least 11.
The turnaround was that sack/fumble on Ryan. Next came the sack and holding penalty that knocked the Falcons out of field goal range, when they still had a 8-point lead.
This was ALL ON THE DEFENSE. They let Brady go 91 yards on them. Then they failed to stop the Pats during the 2-point conversion.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS, bottom line. The Pats' D tighten up second half. The Falcons' D fell to pieces.

It's amazing what a half time regroup will do. I would bet anything they went in and broke down film and just flat out readjusted and picked apart Atlanta's defense.

This came down to three plays by the defense of NE: The sack/fumble with 8:24 to go in the 4th; the NE sack on the next drive; and the rush that followed, resulting in a holding on ATL that put the Falcons out of FG range.

Fair points, but that thing was over when NE won the OT coin toss. You could see it in the different reactions by both team's captains.

Not getting anything out of that catch was demoralizing.
The Patriots refused to quit. The Falcons were the better team (or more talented) tonight but New England just kept grinding and took it a play at a time.
