US President Donald Trump has been tough on Russia and expects Moscow to “return” the Crimea peninsula to Ukraine, the White House spokesman told reporters.
Addressing the resignation of National Security Adviser Michael Flynn – hounded by the media over his contacts with Russian diplomats prior to Trump’s inauguration – Spicer pointed out that Russia “seized” Crimea under the Obama administration and that the Trump-appointed ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has “strongly denounced the Russian occupation.”
"President Trump has made it very clear that he expects the Russian government to de-escalate violence in the Ukraine and return Crimea," Spicer said at the daily news briefing on Tuesday. “At the same time, he fully expects to – and wants to – get along with Russia."
“Crimea is a part of Ukraine. Our Crimea-related sanctions will remain in place until Russia returns control of the peninsula to Ukraine,” Haley said at the UN Security Council meeting on February 2.
Russian envoy Vitaly Churkin responded by citing the US Constitution and pointing out that Crimeans overwhelmingly voted to join Russia, after the US-backed coup in February 2014 overthrew the elected government in Kiev.

Mr. Trump should lay the first brick of his wall before coming at Putin - as great as Trump is, world is still waiting something concrete from him.

Crimea is and will always be part of Russia, the issue is not negotiable under any circumstances, Viktor Ozerov, chairman of the defense committee in the Russian upper house of parliament, told Sputnik on Tuesday.
The lawmaker added that the demand to return Crimea could be compared to Russia demanding from the US to return Alaska, "which is absolutely impossible."

Ozerov suggested that Spicer's statement could have been an attempt to defuse the tension around Trump and to signal to the US establishment that the president was not as lenient toward Russia as he might seem to be.

No it isn't a true comparison as the sale of Alaska was an agreement by both Countries involved.
A true comparison would be if one day all the millions of mexicans living in California voted for California to separate from the USA and then become part of Mexico... that vote would be as worthless and invalid as the vote in Crimea.
Plus lets not forget the "Budapest Agreement" that states that the USA would defend Ukraine against threats or use of force against their territorial integrity.

Kruchev only attached it to Ukrainian SSR in 1954. Don't know why. Move being like some county of California being transferred to Nevada.
Crimea declared independence from Ukraine as early as 1992 so they really haven't been willing to belong to Ukraine ever.
Plus let me remind you that USA partitioned Serbia outside of UN. Country they shouldn't have had any say in. Russia allegedly considered that moment as the factual end of international agreements protecting territorial integrity of nations. Can't blame them IMO. Why would it be allowed for USA if it's not allowed for Russia. Right, USA didn't annex Kosovo. But occupied it nonetheless and installed a puppet government. Kosovo is not a self sustainable nation. It's totally dependent on your handouts. So in practice it is your state but you haven't assumed the responsibilities for the local people. Only the spoils.

These are complicated issues. Trump has been under tremendous pressure from local political elite for his Russia rapprochement stance. This whole time. Unprecedented. As has been his multiple quite friendly comments. He probably just has to give a little 'tougher' signal to public to cool anti-Russia block down. He needs them too after all.
I would concentrate on following how things go forward on regards of North Korea, Iranian issue, Syria, bad muzzies elsewhere.
Sanctions may remain eternally but then again, USA had sanctions against Russia even when everything was good.
I'm still positive on the ties. They can't get much worse can they.

Chechnya is very autonomous. But you are right, the Saudis declared Chechnya independent.
Also, Crimean declaration of independence was not recognized in 1992 either.

Obama let Putin and the Russian Federation do what they pleased for his entire stay as President, he had the RESET button and the FLEXIBILITY during his 2nd term...and now all of a sudden we aren't being "hard" enough on the Russians? The Russians are barely a regional power, a substandard military, no blue water navy and a complete inability to project any real power. Their performance in Syria wasn't all that great although they came away with a total victory and humiliation of Obama. They will punch above their weight via political and cyber warfare means and leverage what they can to for small victories.
But, yes, we need to rattle the sabers and waste 2 generations worth of capital on a huge military buildup to make sure Ivan doesn't come stormin' through the Fulda Gap like the old days!
