You really think so? Surely he could have beaten Dickerson or Columbu.

Dig that vacuum! I never got he chance to
meat I mean meet Mike. :(

That clip was from '79. Mentzer hit his all-time best in 1980 and got 5th place for his efforts. Behind guys like Dickerson, Zane, and Boyer Coe. ::) Mike said that was the last time he would put himself through that kind of torture for such a "shit decision." Maybe Mike wasn't the winner that day but he sure as hell deserved better than 5th place. Someone was trying to send him a "message."
Meanwhile, Schwarzenegger said that a big motivation for him to enter the 1980 Olympia at the 11th hour was to show Mentzer that "you can't knock me and my training."
You know, if we'd had more than one viable bodybuilding federation back then, perhaps guys like Mentzer could've gotten a fairer shake instead of retiring from competition forever in disgust.

No, that's not the point. Mentzer quit, period. Gave up. Talk about letting someone/thing get under your skin. So Arnold drops in at the last minute, let's even satisfy the conspirators and say the whole show was a sham, a fix. So Mentzer just quits? He couldnt have been as passionate about BBing as he said he was. He let this whole stupid thing crush his spirit I say.

When there is a discussion on lazy bodybuilders, you can't go without mentioning Mike Mentzer. The dude was the definition of roid-built lazy-ass bastard of a bodybuilder. For G'd's sakes, he went out of his way to invent a training method that allowed him to stay out of the gym as much as possible. When he couldn't cut it, he quit.
-
Most say that Mentzer never trained the way he advocated for others to train. He supposedly used way higher volume than advertized. He really should have stayed in the game, though. He would have won eventually.

Not just Mentzer; include Robinson, Padilla, Fox & Szalak. The whole group basically disappeared around the same time thank's to Weider's inability to see the value of the rivalries that could've developed with winning. Would have been more interesting.

Mike was small... period..
-
1 Arnold Schwarzenegger
2 Chris Dickerson
3 Frank Zane
4 Boyer Coe
5 Mike Mentzer
6 Roger Walker
7 Roy Callender
8 Dennis Tinerino
9 Tom Platz
10 Danny Padilla
From the 1980 tape that I've seen....I would have it more like:
1 Chris Dickerson
2 Mike Mentzer
3 Frank Zane
4 Arnold Schwarzenegger
5 Roger Walker
6 Tom Platz
7 Boyer Coe
8 Danny Padilla
9 Roy Callender
10 Dennis Tinerino

I would kill that dude on stage at his best. He was small, I could never see what people saw in him..

You guys are delusional, Mentzer was one of the best. I watched the 80 Olympia on DVD and Arnold looked like shit. And for being lazy to each his own on that, if you want to stay 3 hours in the gym and see no results by all means go ahead. Mike's systems works and I'll take a 40 min workout any day.

That's because you are not "Animal". "Animal" trainers bring a puke bucket to the gym on leg day and are disappointed when they don't use it.

LOL, "Animal trainers" wear 6 layers of sweatshirts, to hide the fact that massive amounts of overtraining has left them looking like Kenyan cross country runners.
Brief and intense is all you need.....dont make it too hard.
P.S. sigfried and roy are "animal trainers" right. haha MENTZER RULES.

Unfortunately, "brief and intense" more accurately describes Mentzer's life than his training habits.
