Are they at war with Russia or why meeting ambassador would be prohibited?
After all that's why this institution of ambassadors and other diplomats exist.
Media and the commies seem to be successful in throwing sand in Trump's wheels. They make so big number out of this totally normal everyday diplomatic process that everyone goes psycho if it turns out any of his staff has had contacts with Russians. But no one notices to ask why would it be bad yet alone illegal.

So Sessions met with a Russian ambassador. Senators are supposed to meet with ambassadors. That's why we have ambassadors. I'm sure Obama's ambassadors in Russia met with Russian officials. That's their job.

Because media managed to create an environment where this kind of standard practice is now viewed as something bad.
He should have been open about it in the beginning though.
Trump won his election by landslide openly stating - basically in every rally and debate - he sees better relations with Russia as a good thing. This indicates it was OK for the people. So why hide it if you have been working for that goal. If they had continued to be open about this it would have also took off the ammo from media hostile to Trump.
Of course the claims of Russia interfering in US election is total hoax. Putin himself said that American is great power and not some banana republic so Russia has no means to affect their elections. Although he smiled in mean way after that comment :-\
