On February 28, 2017, the Washington Post reported that the FBI reached an agreement a few
weeks before the Presidential election to pay the author of the unsubstantiated dossier alleging a
conspiracy between President Trump and the Russians, Christopher Steele, to continue investigating
Mr. Trump.
The article claimed that the FBI was aware Mr. Steele was creating these memos as part
of work for an opposition research firm connected to Hillary Clinton. The idea that the FBI and
associates of the Clinton campaign would pay Mr. Steele to investigate the Republican nominee for
President in the run-up to the election raises further questions about the FBI’s independence from
politics, as well as the Obama administration’s use of law enforcement and intelligence agencies for
political ends.
It is additionally troubling that the FBI reportedly agreed to such an arrangement given
that, in January of 2017, then-Director Clapper issued a statement stating that “the IC has not made any
judgment that the information in this document is reliable, and we did not rely upon it in any way for
our conclusions.” According to the Washington Post, the FBI’s arrangement with Mr. Steele fell
through when the media published his dossier and revealed his identity.

Grassley probes FBI's ties to British spy who investigated Trump
http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/322553-grassley-probes-fbis-ties-to-british-spy-who-investigated-trump (http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/322553-grassley-probes-fbis-ties-to-british-spy-who-investigated-trump)
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has opened an inquiry into allegations the FBI worked with the British spy who authored a controversial opposition research dossier on President Trump during the 2016 election.
In a Monday letter to FBI Director James Comey, Grassley asked for records pertaining to any agreements the agency may have had with Christopher Steele. The MI6 agent wrote an explosive memo on behalf of Trump’s political enemies alleging that the Russians had compromising information on the president.
Comey briefed Trump on the existence of the memo in a private meeting in January.
Shortly after, several news organizations published the unverified allegations, which the White House denied.
In late February, The Washington Post reported that the FBI reached an agreement with Steele whereby the British spy would continue his investigation on behalf of the bureau.
“While Trump has derided the dossier as 'fake news' compiled by his political opponents, the FBI’s arrangement with Steele shows that the bureau considered him credible and found his information, while unproved, to be worthy of further investigation,” the Post reported at the time.
Grassley is pushing back and demanding the FBI provide information pertaining to its use of the British spy, whose salacious allegations have infuriated Trump and his allies.
“The idea that the FBI and associates of the Clinton campaign would pay Mr. Steele to investigate the Republican nominee for President in the run-up to the election raises further questions about the FBI’s independence from politics, as well as the Obama administration’s use of law enforcement and intelligence agencies for political ends,” Grassley wrote.
“It is additionally troubling that the FBI reportedly agreed to such an arrangement given that, in January of 2017, then-Director Clapper issued a statement stating that ‘the [intelligence community] has not made any judgment that the information in this document is reliable, and we did not rely upon it in any way for our conclusions.’”
In his letter, Grassley asks for all records regarding Steele’s investigation, details of the agreement between the FBI and Steele, the FBI’s policies for using outside investigators, and whether the bureau has relied on any of the information Steele has provided in seeking warrants.

The FBI uses tax payer dollars for everything they do.

Why does the title of this thread refer to a "fake" Trump dossier ?

But to pay for memos that are the work "for an opposition research firm connected to" a presidential candidate in the midst of a presidential election?
Regardless of your affiliation, don't you believe the FBI should remain independent from partisan politics? The only reason this deal fell through was because it was published by Buzzfeed. Sounds like this guy was just selling his work to anyone that would buy it.
I'm pretty sure that John McCain actually gave Comey the original dossier. They were paying for this guy to continue his work...
Just strange.
-
Anything that could show someone working against Trump, IMO, is perfect fuel to operate the pump will shall drain the swamp. Because that's a no-no, and I'm not convinced these guys didn't totally "forget" how inappropriate, unacceptable, um, maybe illegal it all is... especially with all the demonizing... and someone may have done something very stupid for which they'll now be caught.
But sometimes I'm concerned that Trump not only DOES NOT have the right people around him, but that many of them are infiltrators.

So, we are talking about the dossier that Buzzfeed published and basically told readers, "Here's the info, you decide whether it's real."
Even the New York Times wrote "Buzzfeed's decision" involved "the use of unsubstantiated information from anonymous sources, a practice that fueled some of the so-called fake news — false rumors passed off as legitimate journalism."
You think that the dossier is legitimate?

no shit
what does that have to do with your claim the dossier is "fake"
why did you post the definition of unsubstantiated when you used the word fake
something that fake is proven to be fraudulent or counterfeit
that is not the same as unsubstantiated
btw- why would the FBI have to pay for a document that was already posted online and apparently floating around DC for months

Funny, the media can scream "Fake News" about every little "Right Wing Conspiracy" but when there is a PissGate Dossier of Trump paying hookers to piss all over a bed in Russia you better call that shit "unsubstantiated" and not fake...

the media doesn't scream "fake news"
Trump and Trumptards do that and most of the actual "fake news" is created by right wingers and passed around via Facebook and bogus websites and often shared on this site by a few well known morons
case in point - https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/18/us/fake-news-hillary-clinton-cameron-harris.html

I don't agree to do that
my position on this subject is pretty clear in this thread
if you have simply used the word unsubstantiated rather than fake I would never have even posted in this thread

Same thing I was thinking. The whole reason they were considering paying Steele was because they didn't believe it to be fake.
Meanwhile, FBI informants frequently get paid. That's not a controversy.
-
Ppl often pay others to do things they know aren't proper, too, as a way to separate themselves from the risk as much as possible.

I thought I saw stories a few weeks ago that certain parts have already been verified by multiple sources

Did you have a good day so far? Did you get all your feminine hygiene products at the drug store???

Informants are the riskiest of business, and they leave lots of room for suspicion. It's the nature of its meaning.
-
I think we're seeing some sort of Mad House effect and I pray Trump knows what he's doing.
Imagine being 70 years old and despite having lived an incredible life already, to where you honestly think you may have seen it all by now, and suddenly you find yourself dealing with the information Trump now finds himself handling. That's a story to beat all else.

They don't use drug dealers, they use spies. ::)

Exactly. They are literally working for the government which is why they get paid. Corporate whistleblowers get paid by the government. Nothing about the meaning of informant makes suspicion a part of its nature.

And yet America has become the mess that it is due in large part to "failed" Intelligence (so it's seen). From the lead-up to 9/11, certainly, and onward it's been staggeringly awful.
How's that explained?

At least the failed British "spy" got some pension fund boost.
Why doesn't he work anymore in British intelligence agency? He was so good and valuable?
Scam artist who was probably totally useless for real intelligence work.
But as they saying goes "the one asking is not stupid but the one paying" or something like that.
McCain for sure paid for the "dossier". I bet my left nut - or what is left of it. Well, at least he didn't use American taxpayers money for it but Saudi muzzie money :D

No, I'm not much into defending Reagan if that's what you think. Although I will say there's dispute over this meme.
Are you sure it's truthful?

tOO BUSY SPYING ON CITIZENS
Yeah, SC, I can't deny that it looks like the actual interest is something other than what we're told.
Which requires making-up stuff, of course.
Must be a real "good" business to be in, then, providing information to be used in truth-twisting operations.

Well, now. He is vouched for by the MSM. Perhaps you should apologize.

I needed to get caught up on what you meant by that, but it doesn't look good. Yeah, it looks terrible, really.
