Who won the contest?
1971 Mr. Universe. Bill Pearl won it at 41 years old. He weighed around 245 pounds. Ahead of his time.

Racist decision by modern standarts.

Great upper body with off season legs. How to win a pro contest without separation on thighs, even by the standards since then ?
-
After the ric drasin and ken sprague thread I wasnt sure what to expect here before opening.

wasn't bill a vegetarian as well?
-
sergio is a prime example he had a awesome structure but he seldom if ever got into great condition
-
Bill's the manliest man bodybuilding's ever seen. Know him. Respect the HELL out of him. A wise, intelligent and gentlemanly legend.
-
wasn't bill a vegetarian as well?
^^
Yes, but he ate eggs and drank milk... Since his switch to lacto-ovo vegetarianism, Pearl's diet consists of mainly egg whites, dairy products and meat substitutes for protein sources, fruits and vegetables for his carbohydrates, and a few whole eggs every day for his fat intake.

If I have a weight training hero, it's Mr. Bill Pearl.

Did Bill not train a guy, who used to post on here, when he was young ? I seem to remember Jimmy Thompson telling the story of how Bill would show the boys how to pose and would then take off his posing trunks and make the boys wear them for their routines. The guy on her admitted he wore Bills warm trunks on occasion but didn't think it was odd. It was the guy who had the flesh eating disease. Can't remember his name.

Love the way this sentence is just casually thrown in there.... warm trunks and a flesh-eating disease - GetBig poetry... :D

:)
To add something sensible - Sergio has the quads there, but look how much stronger Bill's neck looks... as for Bill being fat (in Sergio's view) they both look to be in similar condition there at, what? 12-15% maybe? Or is it just water from all the good CIBA sh1t? ;)
-
Sergio was to have heard to have said " I lost to a fat pig."
Bill had a true Herculean build. It was enough to take the insane proportions of Sergio out here. Impressive.
-
:)
Sergio was 30 and Bill was 41 in that pic.
-
Is Bill Pearl still alive? Wikipedia says he's 86 and in Oregon?
-

Bill was a lacto-ovo vegetarian
-
Bill = endomorph
No Meso and surely no ecto would have fat womans legs like that... Screams estrogen.

Yes he is. There are plenty of recent pics of him on google images. He's shorter, has white hair and no signs of ever having worked out.

Is it me or are these guys not that impressive?
Looks like a lot of calories and d-ball. Back then that was probably cutting edge type stuff that only a few people were involved with.

Since a lot of people here are in their 20s and 30s, they will likely look much better unless medical science makes no advances in the next 50 or 60 years. Technology is progressing exponentially and it wouldn't be surprising if they could turn back aging in the next 20 years much less 60.

They're impressive. To be fair to them, up till the mid 70's or so, a lot of the old timers that controlled bodybuilding didn't want guys coming in too lean. They thought it unhealthy looking and a sign of drug use. Also, a lot of the early judges came from the Olympic Lifting scene and felt that some of the newer standards were too feminine, and wanted a thicker look that they thought more masculine.

Yet Joe Weider wanted Arnold to lose a lot of his mass when he came over to the US and weighed 250-260 pounds. He lost in 1969 to Sergio when he weighed 250 and was forced to lose 20 pounds and step onstage at 230 pounds to win his first Mr. O in 1970. Not sure how much guys were pushing mass when you had lean bodybuilders like Robbie Robinson, Frank Zane, Boyer Coe, Ken Waller, Bill Grant, Serge Nubret, Albert Beckles, etc.

Arnold was 250 when he lost to Frank Zane in 1968. He was about 15 lighter the next year when he lost to Sergio in 1969.

I gave Bill Pearl a lifetime achievement award at one of my contests in 2011 and he was in awesome shape at 81 years old. He's a big guy, very healthy and strong. When he was in his prime, he was one of the best and biggest bodybuilders in the world. Pearl and Reg Park set new standards when it came to muscle mass and size back in the '60's. Bill is also one of the nicest and most genuine people I've ever met in the bodybuilding world. Just total class and professionalism.

Wasn't so much mass, but they didn't want too lean. You had guys writing articles with titles like "An Overdose of Definition?", and the older guys would make little comments about waists being a bit too thin, and wondering how they'd do in the Olympic Press. Or they'd comment on pecs looking too feminine, etc..... It was sorting itself out by the 70's, but back in Pearl's prime, there were still some that looked on it with that type of eye.
Also got better for pure bodybuilders with the shift toward Weider controlling it, rather then Hoffman/York Barbell.

Aren't you 5'8?
So Pearl is still like 6'0?
Looks great for 86. I was surprised to read that he is even still alive. Wow, that's awesome. Long life. Nice.
