why did the guy do that? i dont get it...why not just pause for a second and ask the guy if he subs?

I would guess adrenaline... Supposedly the guy in black has been doing it for 10 years... The guy in white, only 4 months. So I think it is a combination of the guy on the bottom not knowing the danger he is in (hence not tapping) and the guy on the top getting overzealous.

control? ??? i'd expect more of myself as a fighter if i was workign with someone of significantly lower experience level...not really work them over...but give them something to work with and learn from....just like your instructor would.
yeah dont get me wrong i'm ignorant on bjj but...

Well it was a tournament, not a seminar. The guy was there to win. But that being said, he should have just choked the kid out... He pretty much could of done whatever he wanted with him, and the kimura is a dangerous technique.

i mean it was there! just hold his arm out the way...and that was a tournament? it's a free for all in the brackets? ???

I'm guessing it was an open tournament... One division, winner take all... All skill levels. Which in my opinion are just plain stupid, for reasons like this.

exactly...i mean you get better by fighting better fighters..
but if you yourself dont possess the skills to fight at that level period..wth are you doing there?

what a fucking asshole the guy in the black was .... he didnt even try to tap him he just went straight for the snap .... no guy with that much experience should do that
as for belts mattering, i posted here a while ago about my training partner tapping out the first black belt in ontario .... when he was a whitebelt ... sometimes being gorilla strong is more than enough ;)

Your friend was a blue/purple belt at the time was he not? Maybe with a wrestling background? After purple, the belts starting to mix in.

nope ... this was back in 2001 ... he wasnt even a bluebelt ... though i think he wrestled a bit in highschool

i have a little bit of a wrestling background i've always worked with....
that i'm hoping will benefit me when i join an academy... :-\ but things like that are just kinda off to me...
i've always paused and asked my opponent if he'd like to tap or submit before i went for it if it was a give me and usually you'd get a yes...if a no or a do it then just a slow application of pressure usually got'em screaming but never to the point of THAT!

i remember there was this one guy who i had a practice match with before my tournament, he was 205 and i was 185, they put me with him because he said he was competing in the 185(droping 20lbs in one day my ass!) ... and i choked him out in about 20 seconds
next time we rolled i decided i would be nice and not choke him right away so i pulled guard ... and he spent the next 4 minutes trying his best to crank my shoulder ... he didnt come anywhere close as i had a firm grip on my leg to prevent it ... but just with the sheer force he was puttign into it he musta torn something and i ended up having to take almost 3 months off training
its people like him who helped me decide to leave rebellion(where i did my bjj training) and train exclusively with the guys in my gym (who are just about the best at rebellion anyways) because i know they are more concerned with my safety then with their egos, just as i am with their safety ... its really not worth 3 months of my time to train with some asshole >:(

Yeah, there can be a lot of egos at schools. I'm lucky, Ronin is a very easy going place where the guys are more than willing to tell you exactly what they did.
