Title: Kalman Szkalak - Mass monster from mid 70's-early 80's
Post by: Danimal77 on March 22, 2017, 10:22:37 PM
This guy never gets talked about. 5'10" and 240 pounds. MASS monster all the way. Thick chest. Big arms and even made Mike Mentzer look small in 1977 and gave Sergio and Robbie and Nubret a run for their money in 1981. Criminally underrated bodybuilder who was in the wrong era (way ahead of his time).

I think he was the one Arnold used to try and create a union for the bodybuilders and it turned the IFBB against him

Either that or he didn't want to do G4P for a title.

He had some feuds with Weider. Not sure about the details or accuracy but I believe he went to Weider HQ and tried to take his pictures. He said if you're not paying me I want the pictures.  Then after that he knew he could never place well in a contest. I think his last Olympia he did a Jesus crucifix pose as a message to his fans.

He now competes at a high level in elite bicycle  races. He does very well in his age group. One of the few to get out with incredible health and fitness.

And then he hit the Crucifix pose and they banned him

Kalman burst on the scene as a superstar winning the 1976 AAU Mr. America over great competition.  Back in the day they gave awards for body parts like best arms and back. Another category was Most Muscular.  Usually for the most ripped guy.  Joe Means at about 180lbs beat Kalman for that award. He looked ripped beyond belief.

yo nj flex good point there, i have mike mentzers original heavy duty journal, when he was dieting for the 79 olympia his calories were usually around 1400 per day , very rarely he would even go over 2k.

That's a recent pic of Kal(far left). He's nearing 70 now and has been racing master's since his 40's. He's a great guy and remains super fit. He has been living in Capistrano Beach for years and prefers a simple life now(personal training, training, and racing on the weekends).

Kal should be 64 this year (born in 1953) so he's not quite 70 yet.

Oldtimer1, thanks for posting the great abdominal pose by Joe Means.  I have never seen it before.  Ron Teufel must have brought some show stopping abdominals to the 1976 AAU Mr. America contest to win that bodypart award.  I do not envy the judges.  That had to be tough call because of the tremendous abdominals Ron Teufel displayed.
