The problem is that it's the only way to get the audience to clap. And it works. The audience obeys and claps. Can you imagine this occurring in any other sport or venue? One of the several aspects of bodybuilding performance and ~~schmoe~~-~~dom~~ fan-dom that is downright weird.

It's a Schmoe 'n' Tell meat market. All drugs, all the time. No wonder so many bodybuilders are short as they must start the drugs prior to puberty which then signals the body they are in puberty and they wind up like Deep Roy.
