him vs OD Wilson was my favorite match up.

that's insane, 550 with one hand
JPS was something else
his battles with Kaz are legendary
didn't JPS blow out his heart deadlifting and die in the gym?
OD Wilson- cant even be mentioned with jps and kaz
OD was a fat piece of shit , who I think won 1 or 2 events only

Always a fan of this sport. Big brutal lifts achieved by big brutal men, usually with big determined hearts. Much like the character of Rocky portrayed by Sly Stallone. Watching these guys, rooting for them was much like watching the Rocky movies. Jon Paul was always fun to watch, a true iron warrior.

On 16 January 1993 Jón Páll Sigmarsson suffered a cardiac arrest. He was deadlifting in his gym, the Gym 80 in Iceland when the cardiac arrest occurred, caused, it is thought, by a traumatic aortic rupture which was related to a weakened heart, a problem that was known to exist in his family.

I think this was on wide world of sports.

My favourite strongman was Finland's Jouko Ahola, from the late 90's. Compact and presice and technical. For me ,the first modern strongman.

Some deadlifts....
Enjoyed his performance in Werner Herzong's Invincible, opposite Tim Roth, as a Jewish strongman ,during the Nazi era. Sadly,Jouko couldn't really act,but I thought it was an interesting and enjoyable piece of miscasting.

Yes, the originals were chopped up and shown on WWS. Franco sued nearly everyone involved, and wound up with something like 1.2 million dollars reportedly. That was the reason that a lot of the later WSMs were held in other countries for many years, the organizers were in fear of lawsuits and high insurance costs.
Those older shows were so unpolished, that's endearing.
Pure Strength, which was a WSM competitor in the late 80's was interesting too, at 30:50, you can see Kazmaier cheat, and almost kill OD Wilson in the process -

In MY eyes, Mariusz and Kaz are the best of all-time. Mariusz P. in particular.

I remember seeing this on live TV. Devastating. Makes me cringe just to watch it. They must've shot him with morphine... he's acting like it was only a paper cut. I always wondered how he was able to recover so quick.
