So Gilbert Baker the fag is good important enough to recognize but Jesus Christ isn't? I'd argue that Christ has done a little more for the world than Gilbert fucking Baker.

Nobody is forcing you to believe in Christ. I just wish you had the intellectual honesty to admit what Christian philosophy has done for the world.
Oh well, maybe your future Islamic overlords will spontaneously decide to stop sawing off people's heads, tossing fags off of buildings, torching and drowning people on video, and blowing up little girls at pop concerts.

Gilbert Baker created Rainbow flag. Are you going to try and tell us that the gay community has done more (for themselves) than Christianity has done as a whole? Seriously?

Do your job, do what people pay you to do, stop trying to manipulate and control the world based on your own biases.

What has it done? It gave us the Inquisition, the dark ages and the "prosperity gospel" by the likes of Creflo Dollar, Joel Osteen, and Robert "Gasman" Tilton.
Christianity—like most religions—advocates that the corporeal world is evil and only hobbles you. Religions is the philosophy of death. Die to live forever. Yeah, I'll pass. I'd rather live now, fully.
Name one thing that we owe and is original to Christian philosophy

Nevermind the years and years of buddhist philosophy years before this traitor "jesus christ" claimed to be the "son of god" & had his "followers" refer to themselves as "christ-ians" & some folklore was written in a book laying claim to common-sense "morals/ethics".

Coach has got to be the biggest snowflake on this board...a grown man who melts down anytime someone he doesn't even know expresses any differing political stance than his on a bodybuilding message board. In his mind, if someone doesn't agree 100% with his politics, they are an idiot and he doesn't understand how they are even capable of functioning without his right-wing genius brain.
-
Absolutely nothing for Memorial Day but who the fuck is Gilbert Baker?
Coach you are a political guy so let me ask a question you can answer.
Why is it that people who have different or slightly different political opinions hate each other so much? It's not like the republican/democrat ie conservative/liberal politicians give a shit about any of us nor do they actually do anything that will accomplish anything for the good of the people and only do shit for the good of themselves and being re-elected and profiting off the backs of citizens.
That all being pointed out very blatantly by just following politics, again, why is it that people who have different or slightly different political opinions hate each other so much?
-

I used to wonder this as well, but I think it is because people like coach, who are either on the far-right or far-left, seem to think that the opposing political party not only has the wrong ideas and philosophy...but that they are actually trying to purposely damage or harm the country. Like Coach used to say that Obama had this secret mission to make America a laughingstock, just like hardcore liberals now claim Trump is trying to destroy the country. In reality, while there are always some genuinely bad people in each party, republicans and democrats for the most part want what is best for America but just have different opinions regarding the best way to get there.

Western civilization, for better or worse. In b4 'Just a hinderance.' In some ways, undeniably, but the elemental character of a society/civ is its mythos. Sure it's bullshit but it might be the only glue that holds things together on a macroscopic scale.
So pretty much everything since Milvian Bridge, including reactions against church stuff, the good, the bad, and the plain fucking goofy. It's not the sole reason we're where we are now but it played a principal role.
I'm not talking heliocentricity or stem cell debates. I mean on a big broad scale. The structural stability and propagation of European civilization as the framework within which historical particulars exist. And I don't mean a conceptual framework by which we interpret those events. I mean a practical, real reason which allowed events to take place. Like if Christian Europe hadn't existed, Newton wouldn't have been born to privilege where and when he was and done what he did. There would have been a totally different timeline. If Charles Martel had to marshal a bunch of independent, free thinking atheists to battle instead of Christians convinced of the deliciousness of sky-cake, would the Muslims have conquered Europe? If Florence didn't like the Pope (in b4 ghibelline propaganda!) and Bruneleschi didn't complete the Duomo, and that dude who's name I can't remember didn't use its crazy height to take astronomical data, and Columbus didn't get the data, and didn't get funded by monarchs atop a stable state, and people later weren't convinced it's more than ok to slaughter non-Christians wholesale by way of manifesting God's intended destiny, etc. It's all connected.
Again, better or worse is worth speculation but that's not what you asked for. You asked for one thing Christianity has done. It defined and perpetuated the civilization responsible for everything that has happened up until now.
-
Thanks, but there's no need. Instead, can you answer my question by naming one thing that we owe and is original to Christianity?
Something tells me that even if I answered your question you wouldn't accept it.
Deny Christ if you want, I will not.
-
I thought I gave a hell of an answer. You know. For an atheist.
-

Damn
Seemed like more fun than the usual 'Because morality' debate that invariably pops up and never goes anywhere.
Someone can argue that European civilization sucked if they want to but they can't argue that Christianity wasn't its foundation. It's intellectually dishonest to pretend that removing Christianity would leave all of history intact and only do away with witch burnings and Inqusitions, and that we'd all be exactly where we are now except with more science and flying cars.

Exactly.
...and when did all that shit happen? People always like to go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back and talk about that trying to create a false equivalency with Islam.
Meanwhile, Mooslims are going to pop concerts and blowing up little girls RIGHT FUCKING NOW. They are killing people TODAY in the name of Allah.
Also.....Buddhism and Taoism and whatever else has done fuck-all for modern society.
-
This man gets it.
I made one small edit.
Just being crystal clear - I'm not saying Christianity is the direct cause of all good things that came out of Europe. I'm saying it provided a stability that Europe required in order to develop as it did.

I understand, but I think it provided more than just stability. It provided a framework.

I thought your answer was good. And of course you are right that it would be intellectually dishonest to assume that everything would be the same minus Christianity if Christianity were removed.
However, I also have to point out that your answer, as good as it is, is somewhat guilty of a slight variation: it assumes that what happened couldn't have happened but for Christianity. Who knows where we'd be if the mythology of Jesus hadn't taken hold? You somewhat acknowledge that, in your closing statement. It's wrong to present western civilization with Christianity as one and the same. They are inexorably linked, because western civilization developed in countries were Christianity was the majority religion but it's hard to really know Whether western civilization developed in spite of Christianity as opposed to because of it.
As for Pray_for_War, it's ironic that you were unable to even offer an answer. You hid behind your finger and mumbled about not denying Christ. Reminds me of Peter and the rooster...

My memory is very foggy, but I believe Dietrich Bonhoeffer had written about the influence of Christianity on the Western world. His book, The Cost of Discipleship, is a book that is on my list to read.

ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them
under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

I'll go with that although it's hard to say what influence another mythos would have had. Not to be all Back To The Future-y again but the permutations are incalculable.
Which isn't to say shit hasn't changed. Clearly, The Vatican isn't dictating much at all any more and we're still here. So where are we? After this Big Emergence. Do we have a unifying mythos? I haven't seen one for sale down at the mall. Is there a new foundational belief that keeps neighbors who worship different gods somehow in genuine agreement with one another? Because that'd be a neat trick.
Guess we have a kind of live and let live, do what you feel but do no harm, I'm ok you're ok, limp dick humanism but it just doesn't have the same chutzpah as good old fashioned wild-eyed religious zealotry. It's great, seeing how it lets guys like me say no thanks to church on Sunday without getting pelted with rocks, which suits me just fine, but I doubt it'll stand up to any real trial by fire over the next couple thousand years if we manage to last that long.
I don't mean to imply some metaphysical horseshit about being orphaned by the death of God here. We were orphaned and figuring shit out since day 1. But you gotta hand it to the successful religions, savagery and all, for keeping shit glued together in the tempest and managing to channel our nature. I question whether Humanism, enlightened as it is, suits humans. We might not be that evolved.
I am, obviously. It's the rest of you assholes who are the problem.

Likewise. The folks are getting on a bit so I'll have to make the return trip sometime, and will likely take some time for myself in NY. I assume it's still the case that if you order an iced tea you better mean it.

Canadians are butt hurt because of a doodle? I didn't even notice what the doodle was until I opened this thread. And I honestly can't remember if Remembrance Day even had a doodle. Not something I pay attention to.

Americans are very sensitive when it comes to their history/holidays/Google doodles. Canadians are just happy when we're mentioned somewhere, because it reminds us the world hasn't forgotten about us yet.

Come on, avxo. You're smarter and more educated than that.
Love it or hate it, Christianity did play a very important and positive role in history.
The dark ages were the result of the fall of the Roman empire. Christianity had nothing to do with bringing the dark ages.
During the dark ages, Christianity actually saved Europe. Monasteries were responsible for preserving education and very important literature.
Without a Roman emperor to keep them united, Europeans stayed united under their new Emperor, Jesus Christ.
Christian armies helped keep the Muslims from invading all of Europe.
The Inquisition was bad, but it killed hundreds as opposed to millions killed by modern, communist, atheist governments.
The Crusades killed thousands, but they kept the Muslim invasions at bay and helped end the dark ages by the sharing of information and technologies of the time from different parts of the world.
Like it or not, many great advances in technology, medicine, finance, etc. happen during times of war unfortunately.
The prosperity gospel in no way represents Christianity and it accounts for only a tiny part of the population of those to profess faith in Jesus Christ.
Christianity is not a philosophy of death, but of life. It's interesting that the more secular a country is, the higher the suicide rate. How's that for a philosophy of death?
I could go on and on, but you get the point.
-

Important? Can't deny that. But positive? I'm not convinced. And with human history still ongoing, the jury is still out on that one.
As for Christianity not being a philosophy of death, permit me to disagree. Christianity is, quite explicitly, advocating that this life is meaningless except as an opportunity to accept God on faith by believing in Jesus so that you may enjoy the real life, that's coming after instead of being punished by God.
As for your assertions, a number of them are just laughable and almost all are textbook cases of the "post hoc ergo propter hoc" fallacy.
