in this day and age, it seems rather important to be able to defend oneself. guns have their place, but so does unarmed combat.
which martial arts for self defense would you suggest?
-
Tae Kwon-Schmoe.
-
Your basic amalgam of "karate" and boxing, combined with a robust body and greater than normal strength.
-
i have been leaning towards wrestling, but im not sure i would feel comfortable wearing the wrestling uniform.

Wrestling is good but make sure you study professional wrestling as well. Pros are well versed in multiple disciplines.
Boxing is the best self defense.

Someone kicked sand in his face on the beach.

If you are an naturally agile guy, having an easy time jumping and kicking, try kung fu. If you have poor flexibility and can't move with ease, boxing will be a better choice.
Or simple self defense classes.

im leaning towards some kinda grappling... seems interesting!

Just watch this and save your money:

Actually never cared about gimmicks as long as they were funny or original.
Which is why I responded to you.

yes those pre rehearsed moves in slow motion
would be really effective when some lunatic attacks you in a frenzy

indeed. bodybuilding is the art of defending oneself without having to defend oneself.

One could argue that the mandatory poses are much akin to a high level kata.

You mean what fake martial arts for self defence? Buy a gun, because there isn't any known real martial arts in the getbig, where all the experts swear in the name of UFC.

Twins (one boy, one girl, 5 years of age) enrolled in "Tae Kwon Do" and have brought the martial arts discipline and lifestyle into the home.
You learn a lot more than just throwing your opponent around, but I'm a little bit tired of bowing every time they enter the room.
And every time I ask one of them a question, they come to attention with a slight bow and with their hands in the 'lotus position'(?) and respond in a loud voice with a "Sir" at the beginning and a "Sir" at the end.
Great training for kids but they grow up too fast and sound like they just got out of boot-camp.
I highly recommend some form of martial arts training for all GetBiggers even if you have no intent of throwing your wife or kids or the next door neighbor around.
Discipline is of prime importance within the world of martial arts and you can never get too much of that regardless of the age in which you find yourself.
....... and lastly .... I'd like to recommend Krav Maga!
