Title: Anyone else wish Baby Boomers would just fucking retire already?
Post by: BBSSchlemiel on June 24, 2017, 07:01:31 AM
Especially the women?

I'm a late Gen X'er or early Millenial depending on the birth years used.

I understand some of these schleps can't afford to retire, but I've noticed the vast majority of them have now reached ages at which they're incompetent, worthless, or whatever other adjective you prefer. It seems many are damn senile or are so worn down mentally that they don't have a clue what's going on, not to mention that most have gone down physically. I've heard all that shit about 80 year olds still sharp as whips but I find those to be exceptions. I believe it as fact that people simply regress in the 60s or at worst start plain sucking at most of what they do. Not to mention the females amongst them become professional bitchers and moaners. I find this common in healthcare and education.

Some Boomers are now taking up space, even when they have enough to retire, because they "don't know what to do with themselves". And we're not talking about such artistically or creatively inclined people who we actually need around still and actually had some special life mission.

My view: if you have enough resources to retire but need a stupid workplace to figure out what to do with yourself, you suck!

My mother is 67 with COPD but still works a desk job, because her insurance doesn't cover her medication. Pretty cruel cycle.

USA? Such a situation is impossible in most of europe. Insurance for everyone and everthing is covered.

I bet you cover a lot of the cost with your job earnings right?

Sorry about your mom, but employer based insurance was a government intervention that was supposed to be temporary but became permanent. It had the effect of tethering  people to their jobs and still does. It's one of the reasons why the healthcare system is so messed up and can't be fixed.

The free market is a price system. When you go to a hospital even the doctors don't know how much anything costs.

You know what? You're not the only one I hear asking such a question. I've heard it many times from many people, to the point that it can't be a freaking coincidence.

Baby boomers have spoiled this country. They inherited a decent country that valued innovation, hard work and resilience and turned it into what is soon to be a shit hole. If you take a look at a technological advancement chart, from the 1890s to today, we should be driving flying cars, commuting in 350mph trains and visit Mars once or twice. Instead what we've had is president after president of half-senile baby boomer presidents hellbent in being up in everyone b-ness and spending an astronomical amount of money in military equipment and personnel at the expense of technological advancement.

Folks, we HAD the resources, BY NOW, to cure every cancer imaginable, be able to get to any place around the world in less than 3 hours, have an insanely talented population (when compared to the rest of the world,) drive cheap American-made non polluting cars, visit state of the art hospitals, et cetera

Instead, what we have is this (graveyard after graveyard of useless and UN-used military equipment):

Thank you baby boomers. Eat shit and die!

Funny this should come up right now - read this interesting article v recently...

The prevailing approach to dealing with these problems exacerbates generational tensions. The central strategy is “kicking the can down the road” or “extend and pretend,” avoiding crucial decisions that would reduce current living standards, eschewing necessary sacrifices, and deferring problems with associated costs into the future.

A final revealing measure is the concept of lifetime net tax benefit, which measures the benefits received over a person’s life by calculating the difference between all taxes paid and all the government transfers that he or she has received and will receive. A 2010 study from the International Monetary Fund found that in the U.S. the lifetime tax burden was positive (tax paid was less than benefits received) for all age cohorts above 18 years, with the largest benefit accruing to those over age 50. But the figure for future generations is negative (benefits received will be less than taxes paid), meaning they’ll have to meet the obligations of their elders.

Such measurements probably understate the shortfall, as they fail to account for the cost of environmental damage or higher commodity prices resulting from resource shortages. Future generations will bear the ultimate cost of present decisions or inaction. As in Francisco Goya’s famous painting, “Saturn Devouring His Son,” today, the old are eating their children.

Honestly? If you want to see baby boomer inaction, selfishness, generational greed and an overall attitude of not giving a shit, take a drive from Jersey City to Newark. Most of the infrastructure was built in the 30s and was left to rust by a full generation of not-give-a-shitters.

Dirty little secret is that when most of the bridges around the NYC area were built, the bridge and tunnel authorities were to collect a toll fee ONLY UNTIL the bonds that were issued to pay for them were fully paid off. Well, bridge and tunnel fees now account for a large chunk of city revenues that are mostly used to pay exorbitant baby boomer pensions.

Baby boomers have become a cancer.

Once the white folks took the road out they had no more use for it

""White flight" from Newark to the suburbs, which started in the 1940s accelerated in the 1960s.[85] The 1967 riots resulted in a significant population loss of the city's middle class, many of them Jewish, which continued from the 1970s through to the 1990s.[86] The city lost about 130,000 residents between 1960 and 1990.

From the 1950s to 1967, white population shrank from 363,000 to 158,000, its black population grew from 70,000 to 220,000.[87] The percentage of Non-Hispanic whites[81] declined from 82.8% in 1950 to 11.6% by 2010.[88] The percentage of Latinos in Newark grew between 1980 and 2010, from 18.6% to 33.8% while that of Blacks decreased from 58.2% to 52.4%.[89][90][91][92]"

Dude, it's no coincidence, it's a fact. Last week I attended a school district meeting in which one of the talking paint points was the amount of the bonds that were going to be issued to pay for school ground extensions and building a soccer field for the school. Riddle me this: in a county where real estate taxes are easily $20,000-$30,000 per household per year... how is it that a town has to issue bonds to pay for shit? Well, the reason has to do with pension costs for public employees.

See, we all grew up hearing the story that teachers are underpaid, yet, they are able to get to 100k within 15 years of employment and be able to retire after 25-30 years of service. Same with police men. In the town I live in, nothing has happened since the Saw Mill Pkwy traffic accident of 1973, yet, they regularly demand better cars, more employees and better weapons (not to mention pensions). All in all, we have a team of public employees making 100k after 15 years of service. If you start work at the age of 25 (which most teachers/cops/janitors do) you can retire at the age of 55, having made 100k for 10 years and, GET THIS, easily make 100k for another 20/30 years doing SHIT (aka retired).

Do you think they give a shit about kids not having a soccer field? Not a chance!

And then they wonder how and why cities run out of money...

Nope. We get taxed very similarly to Europeans when you consider our taxed income getting spent on taxed goods and then pay for tax on everything else. We pretend we take home more of our paycheck but we really don't. We make less and get taxed less and see less return from those taxes. Most Europeans make more, get taxed more, and see more return from those taxes.

As for healthcare, the richest nation on earth can't afford it.

You seem to be on your way to being a libertarian, slapper. What you're describing is the big government model in action.

You're about halfway there. Once you realize that domestic Government interventions are just as big of a fail as foreign ones you're home.

This should get you there:

I wouldn't think of myself as a Libertarian. I firmly believe that these services are needed by the community.

What I don't get is the platoon of tenure-seeking opportunists in quiet/safe counties. They only seem to be interested in getting a job here, commute from their screwed up neighborhoods and offer families like mine nothing in return. I honestly wish I could interview potential teachers/police/janitorial employees myself.

Years ago, we had a case of two teachers who were commuting from Long Island and were, more often than not, not able to get to work whenever the weather got bad. Needless to say, we had a day or two in which the school principal had to do the work of assistant teacher because she did not have enough personnel in the building to carry out all educational activities. Imagine your kid sitting in a classroom without a teacher for 5 hours. They offered no apology and quickly made it known to the principal that they had tenure. And the parents just stood there looking at each other not knowing WTF was going on.

That's not true at all.

The reason we're not driving 500 feet off the ground (just an example) rests squarely on the baby boomer shoulders.

It's really mind boggingly difficult to implement technological change when your boss does not understand technology or the benefits it offers.

I once had a boss, in the early 2010s, that boasted about not using his computer and not needing to send out emails (he preferred sending hand-written mail instead). I kid you not! And yeah, he was a Baby Boomer.

That's hilarious. Don't know which is worse, but for sure the two mentalities don't mix. What percent of baby boomers are staying on the job because they need to versus want to? About half and half? People have not been so good about saving money, with all the second mortgages, etc. But then again a lot of people just don't know what to do with themselves after retirement. I would train every day and be in heaven.

Actually, slapper has me thinking about this a bit more.

It's true - look at all the shit infrastructure, ugly buildings etc..he's right.   Shit, it took until the 90s for these assholes to figure out that the back row of a movie theater should be much higher than the front.   Also, everything was so seller based, and the consumer was often screwed for things out of their control.....

A few reasons:

We are probably a bit unhealthier than other advanced nations (obesity, lack of exercise) equals higher costs
We always insist on the most and the best, we are Americans
Our hospitals build the fanciest facilities in the richest suburbs to stay competitive with other hospital networks equals super-high construction costs (more so than in other countries)
Our doctors enjoy higher fees and a higher life style than in other nations
We pay full ticket or near full ticket for our drugs here; other countries allow their governments to negotiate down the drug prices  and the drug companies go along with it rather than lose the business
We use a lot of drugs, we are Americans
Our insurance companies take an administrative cut that goes to shareholders in dividends, more so than in other countries
We have more newly arrived immigrants and poor people whom we subsidize than many other nations

I used to be against a single payer solution, but the above reasons are so complex that I am beginning to conclude it is our only way out. "Market solutions" are a mirage that will go nowhere. I liked the comment above that the doctors don't know the prices of anything any more than the patients do.

Are you plain stupid or something???  At least they are working for a living instead of begging....not only that, Social Security doesn't pay squat and with medical bills, they have no choice.  Unless you plan to pay for their long term care, shut your ass up you goof.

That was my comment, and here's the problem with single payer: healthcare services (doctors, hospitals, medical equipment etc.) are limited whereas the demand for healthcare is essentially unlimited. You can always find a reason to go to the doctor.

So, The government can promise you health coverage but they can't promise you healthcare. Exclaiming  "healthcare for all"  sounds good and makes you feel good but in the end it's just a platitude.

Here's how it plays out in the real world. How long would the wait times be in Canada if they couldn't use the United States as a pressure valve?

Bro single payer works just fine all over europe. I pay 170 dollar a month for absolutely full cover. Just like everybody else in my country. Top of the bill healthcare for everyone, anytime, anywhere. Not a single person can be excluded because the law does not allow that. It is not possible to be not insured. You cant pay 170 dollar a month? No problem its freenin that case.

Thanx brah great insights. Why wont they negotiate drug prices? Man this is gettin weirder by the minute!

We heard this about the Canadian system over and over, that it was the greatest thing since sliced bread:

Healthcare wait times hit 20 weeks in 2016: report

A survey by the Fraser Institute found a median wait of 20 weeks for “medically necessary” treatments and procedures in 2016 – the longest-recorded wait time since the think tank began tracking wait times.

We also heard this about the old Soviet system too. Right up until the time it collapsed.

For persons under 65, the insurance companies "kind of" negotiate down drug prices. For persons over 65 (covered by the federal Medicare program, the government is PROHIBITED by law from negotiating down drug prices (to avoid the semblance of socialism I guess). Trump has questioned this but has not proposed anything specific yet.

The flip side of our high costs/your lower costs is the following: the United States is subsidizing world wide health care advances at the present time to a large extent. The money flowing so freely to our medical research centers, our doctors, and our pharmaceutical companies is a big part of the reason that the vast majority of these advances are occurring here in the U.S. This "subsidization" of health care around the world I guess could be another reason to added to my list above, or at least a related variable.

Are you plain stupid or something???  At least they are working for a living instead of begging....not only that, Social Security doesn't pay squat and with medical bills, they have no choice.  Unless you plan to pay for their long term care, shut your ass up you goof.

In case you didn't realize from reading my post, I am speaking of incompetent people who suck at their jobs but whom employers can't get rid of because of "age discrimination".

I guess so. I think the way single payer would work is like Medicare. We would all pay into a fund every month (based on earnings? Flat rate? Don't know). So he would pay in along the way also. But he might take out a lot more than he paid in, depending on his condition and medical needs. Like Medicare.

Do you need someone to retire so you can find work?

FYI, I retired 7 years ago.

So, it's a system in which fit people subsidize the obese. Getbig doesn't approve.

Baby boomers have to be the most unfit generation in the history of this country. Seems like every other one needs a winnie walker to get around, and these aren't extremely old people were talking 65 to 70.

This is what the late great Jack Lalanne was doing at that age.

Sorry about your mom, but employer based insurance was a government intervention that was supposed to be temporary but became permanent. It had the effect of tethering  people to their jobs and still does. It's one of the reasons why the healthcare system is so messed up and can't be fixed.

They were supposed to be evaporating authorities.

Now they have become a dumping ground for every politician's brother/sister/cousin/niece/nephew, etc.

Legacy costs are going to destroy states with public unions.

Mostly work....well about 40 or so hours a week except for the occasional sabbatical. Otherwise, travel, workout, swim, get tan, dance, eat, drink, sleep, fuck, play pinochle, hangout with friends, have fun with my wife and kids....you know....the usual. You?
