This goes for all the ones taking steroids that are in their middle ages and senior years. When does one say "Enough is enough?" and move on from taking steroids and carrying on a facade, you know the ones that continuously bluff people that they are...
...saying your prayers
...taking your vitamins
...training like an animal
...getting 8 hours of sleep
...eating 6-8 small meals a day
...acting like a guru in front of people
...making sure you're not tripping over your lies
...tanning three times a day and saying its the sun and your skin tone
...putting up photos on social media with your daily affirmations and motivational memes
...making sure everyone see's you carrying around your food and always a shaker with protein in it
...explaining to your clients or friends that the reason they're not getting into shape is because they are not trying hard enough, giving it 110%, eating the right protein, carb, fats ratio's, mixing skim milk instead of water in their shakes, not going to failure when lifting, you know just making crap up as you go to get by and make them look like punks and losers.
It takes a lot to keep this going. This is why kids nowadays act the way they do, because their parents were too into themselves and selfish to worry about their spawn and how they were developing. Generation Nothingness IS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's an addiction so totally giving it up is not in the cards for most bodybuilders unless career or family place demands that make it impossible or they get stuck in prison or some other limiting factor. Otherwise, best strategy is to go clean for long stretches in older years. Keep in mind that the basics of weightlifting and low body fat and cardio are healthy rather than unhealthy so these factors compensate and give you strong health advantages over the general public. It's continuing to do competitions and doing all the stuff that competitions require that pose an issue in later years. But without the competitions, most older bodybuilders may not have the incentive to stay in shape. So it's a dilemma. But listen to your body and level with your doctor.

Is it only bodybuilders who are like this or society?
Anyone who is passionate about something is extreme. That passion becomes your focus and everything else is secondary.
Having money and a great career doesn't mean you're not self centered.

good question. im 53 years old. i maintain a 10-12 % bodyfat level year round. winter its 12 and now its 10. im 210 lbs at 5ft 9. winter i go up to 230ish. i never carry food or protein drinks everywhere. if i miss a work out so what. i only workout 3 times a week usually anyways. i dont eat 5-8 meals a day either. i used to think you had to when i was younger cuz thats what the mags all said. smh and lol. i still use gear but only test and sometimes deca and tren and maybe some dball too nothing crazy either. i use only machines now i train smarter. i understand more now than when i was younger and hung with some pros. actually pros know very little about bodybuilding working out and eating. they have superior genetics and awesome response to drugs. i dont look as good now as when i was in my 20s but i look better than most guys in their 20s. so what happens is we have to evolve as we get older. the days of being huge is gone. you dont have to lose it all but your body is different at 50 than 20 and 30 and 40 etc. some just quit cuz their body failed them and others just quit. if your smart you can maintain and be healthy and happy train smarter.

This is a very serious question ...... the one you'll never see in a bodybuilding magazine ..
Those bodybuilders that think they have a mission in the world ( most ) will simply carry on to a senseless route ...
Doctors can't tell openly, but most seasoned bodybuilders keep going after the blood work has shown signs that their organs can't take it anymore
from pro veteran bodybuilders to the cougars female all year round ripped", they just say they will move on and quit BB, but the blood work keeps showing the same toxics over and over ....
Then you have those who do it naturally, yet, they abuse their bodies in the gym, 25 plus years training heavy in the gym, ignoring sored joints, hips, spine, lower back pain etc .... the fountain of youth my ass! its a major wear and tear.... taking pain killers, glucosamine ,oil pills icing the joints ,and who knows what else, while their older friends/ brothers/family members have a more functional life and less expense on doctors and chiropractors etc.....
Look at Palumbo , he's doing financially good as a guru and business man, physically speaking he has had serious organs and joints problems , now he's going to have shoulder replacement surgery (didn't even know you can do that ) and then try to hit the gym to get big (ala Ronnie)
WoooSHHHHHHHHH

most bodybuilders are still around
theyre not injured
not sick
not dead
this is another shitty thread by people who bitch about bodybuilders health like theyre really concerend
why dont you talk about the 10 cyclists that died since 2016
the two deaths in cricket by ball to the head in 2013 and 2014
or the three people who all died in new york marathon in 2008

No one in his right mind would allow such nonsense
Only in bodybuilding there's not time to quit or move on' that's why you have Flex and Kevin coming back to IFBB pro stage.

Do you have some type of developmental delay? I did not say anything about getting injured all I said is that the toll of taking steroids and being a pin cushion and lying sack of shit must wear on you. Lee Haney-looks great! Dorian-looks great. Rich Gaspari-looks horrible. So again, for the moronic teens that carry jugs of "haters tears" to World Gym: Lying everyday...with just about everything, taking steroids, cooking them up, finding a source that has legit drugs, getting all the other non-steroidal drugs, making sure your mommy doesn't find them, When is it enough and that person can finally breathe again?
STAY POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your best bet is to start incorporating more fitness type activities: hiking, biking, swimming, yoga, maybe some light lifting, get lean as possible. Forget about steroids and move into test and gh and maybe weed. Look at what Yates is doing, he's got the right idea, lives in a nice warm climate, big into biking, yoga, and weed. Nothing more pathetic then a 50 year old dude still running tren, wearing wife beaters and bandanas to the gym, rolling up on their Harley, still trying to hang on to the "glory days." Oh and cut the protein way down, the amount of protein intake required to put on muscle is seriously overinflated, look into tons of fresh veggies, fruits, nothing processed, focus on fiber intake and nutrient rich foods, all that protein is super acidic, creates tons of inflammation, taxes the kidneys, and is generally not healthy especially in your 50's.

True but what's the alternative? Bodyweight exercises? They'll fuck you up too - and in fact, I think many of them put more strain on joints than working with weights.
Just turn into a fat couch potato? I've been thinking of doing something different for awhile now but I can't find anything that gives me the physical benefits (despite the niggles and aches) that gym work does.

-
I hope you're joking ??
Yes, I was.

yes joint problems exist. BUT they exist in people who never lifted too. the worse thing you can do is NOTHING. exercise lift weights keep active. of course good genetics helps. example. my dad is 80 years old. never had an operation in his life. still rides horses bales hay cuts firewood works on cars etc. very active man. my mom is 79. cant hardly move without pain joints back hips etc. sits on couch allday. IF she would do something anything she would feel better but she wont. so staying active is the key. like i said before. you have to evolve and change your training eating etc. stay fit keep looking good but dont dwell on it. there are other things in life. also notrhing wrong with using a LITTLE gear to help either. but just a little. my friend died at 46 from a heart attack. but he was acting like he was 20. running 7 differnet compounds using coke drinking etc.
-
Just before your new kidneys shut down.
-
I feel back problems are common in bbers. I'm no bber but years of improperly done squats have fucked my back.

heavy squats will fuck up your back because you will lose form going for extra reps, its what the body does when squatting.
the back is the weak link.

Funk man, not like you to be a little... sour? We're all aging buddy - I'd take Arnie's 40+ years of being ALPHAMAX to a lifetimes mediocrity. Wouldn't you? I'd say the guy has earned the right to look like sh1t - can we all say the same for ourselves..?

Bottom line - it's a mental illness. Everyone on this board has traits of many illnesses.
Mostly, obsession.
-
Why quit, is there anything better to do in life? Lift 6 times/week each health all your life. Start some low doses testosteron when your past 45-50 add 20 pound to your natural weight and continue till u die...think thats a good plan!
All natties out there have a humongous possibilities to take over if they start the drugs use later on in their career compared to those who start at early age!

Do you have some type of mental delay? I did not say all of Generation Nothingness is bodybuilding related but PARENTS THAT ARE TOO SELFISH AND NOT AROUND FOR THEIR CHILDREN ARE THE CULPRIT.
So what you're saying is that bodybuilding is NOT a selfish endeavor?

This is all so true. Dude I stopped all the protein bullshit about a year ago and I look the same, only better (less mid section fat, smoother skin, enjoy life more). I have fish maybe once a week, and cut dairy down to maybe a pizza every couple weeks. All carbs, veggies, and oils, and beans. I use trt and blast higher when I feel like it. Never touch anything but test. Lots of guys at the gym look exactly as u describe. Seems so sad to still be 50 and thinking the gym is what u look forward to all day long. I will say that the millennial sand early twenty somethings still going thru the #goingtowar phase of their life, look really good. I don't remember kids when I was in my twenties looking like they do now.

They still love it and they can still do it, even if not quite to the degree they did in their prime.
Even guys like Tony Pearson still compete on occasion. Only he goes to NABBA, as he did when he won the USA National Masters class in 2014.
Flex Wheeler is doing the classic physique category. Heck, Danny Hester couldn't even win his class at the Nationals. Yet, he won the first Olympia classic physique shot.
And lest we forget, look at Dexter Jackson. He's still winning shows and is top 3 at the Olympia. He still has an outside shot at being Mr. Olympia again. Johnnie Jackson is slightly younger than Dexter Jackson. He's still winning shows (i.e. the Toronto Pro), although he's retiring after this year's Olympia.
If you can still get it, then get it.

So why are you picking on the guy? Obviously, he had some good things going for him. Otherwise, if he were as desperate as you claim he is, he would have attempted his comeback shortly after he retired, not over a decade later.
He still loves bodybuilding and wants to get in a few competitions for old times' sake. He's not the first. As mentioned earlier, guys like Lee Priest, Tony Pearson, and others hit the stage on occasion just for fun.

What's the point of this, other than complaining for the sake of complaining?
Guess what happens when people say "enough is enough". People like you pick on them and complain that they aren't as big as they once were. Hence, they were "all drugs".
This is on the same level as people who criticize Phil Heath for lifting light weights while picking on Ronnie Coleman and his multiple injuries, due to engaging in the very same training about which they blast Heath for not doing.

Did some practice poses at the gym today and look bigger and better then ever.

I agree and think he's a real good example of lifetime bodybuilding.
The problem I had was all the nuthuggers declaring he had a shot to be top 5 or even win the Olympia.
That delusional fanboy crap really annoyed me.
Kevin should have guest posed and competed in a 2017 pro show he had a shot to place in.
Maybe Tampa or Toronto?

I will quit after a certain level of competitive success is when I will quit bodybuilding the sport sense, but never the lifestyle (love to train, the gym culture, so healthy etc)
I am slowly adjusting my training for life extension principles too (hot yoga, stretch, stay away from epic big lifts)
bodybuilding/being OCD about my appearance keeps me living a clean life. if i didnt care what I looked like so much, i could see myself being kinda fat and a sloppy drunk times. I love a good hedonistic time. but I still enjoy myself as a bber just infrequent periods of time. this weekend, had apple pie, ice cream, candy and all kinds of Mexican food and burgers etc.
when i am quite older, i will do an offseason and a "diet mode" good to keep bodyfat low but good to enjoy a little softer self too - do a masters division etc every 3-4 years
ii need a certain level of success to quit quit
-
Some guys whole identity is tied up with getting compliments on their steroid muscles. They will risk health to protect their fragile ego. They will rationalize away the justifications of using drugs so they can lose their insecurities.
I think the guys that win in this game are the ones that train naturally. Yes, I'm going there. Those that train for health and strength. I have more respect for a guy that runs 6 days a week and hits either the weights or body weight stuff than any guy juiced. Truth be told if they only knew how many people make fun of steroid guys. I got news for you. Everyone knows how you got that way. Only the fools don't.

Great post and perfect example of how to be a lifelong bodybuilder.
Everyone should consider their bodybuilding life as a book.
Each phase of your bodybuilding is a chapter, you write in that book.
-
Maybe it's too early to give up just yet...
-
Fine as a hobby, but if it's your life and you're not earning enough from it to earn a decent living or don't have another line of work which does, then it's time to reconsider.
-
When you realise that you have looked pretty much the same for a few years despite all the training, dieting and roiding. You just loose passion for it.
I still train 4 times a week with weights and 3 times a week boxing class but i feel like i just train because i've always been doing it and it's part of my life routine.
-
Seriously though, good question. Do bbers stop only went they fuck up their life or health?
seems to me most do it to death. Even when health starts to fail they are too addicted to go back to normality.
