Pearl is possibly my very favourite personality in all of bodybuilding/weight training culture.
A fine, fine man.

Someone should do an interview with him

I think he has earned a pearl necklace at this point.
-
Was it 71 universe where he won and everybody chickened out on goin against him? He was 41 and weighed 242 pounds. Along with Larry Scott, one of my favorites.
-
He had a powerful physique.
-
His biography is really interesting. It's named, "Beyond the Universe". On of the few guys to make serious money out the game. Pearl's life is so interesting. From being in the Military. Playing in a band. Being a wrestler and restoring antique cars were a few of his interests. I bet he has well over a million in antiques.

Bill Pearl & Drave Draper give their views on modern bodybuilding.

When I started lifting in the '80s, the first bodybuilding book that I bought was Bill Pearl's "Getting Stronger."
(Arnold's Encyclopedia is the only other bodybuilding book that I have.)

He lives up in the Medford, Oregon area. My older brother sees him sometimes but I haven't been lucky enough to when I visit. With regard to that video where they talk about today's bodybuilding, I agree with Draper and Pearl.

:D

I'm pretty sure that he still has a great set of arms

3 legends
Amen

Only tried steroids once. For 6 weeks he took 2 Nilevar he states in his book. Got too bloated and sick so he stopped. LMFAO.....but still a legend and great man.
-
What was the connection between him and Sri Shinmoy?
Didn't he promote that huckster?

Vouched for him when he was doing his strongman stunts. Later Pearl waffled a little, but......

This is interesting, it basically chronicles Sri Chinmoy's journey into lifting -
.
He got Pearl, Wayne Demilla, Zane, Katz, Carl Lewis, Hugo Girard, Frantz, Dan Lurie, Al Oerter, etc.... all to vouch for him.
Bill Pearl for his part says that since Chimnoy isn't competing in a sport with established rules like OL, Powerlifting, Bodybuilding, etc..... but rather under his own thing the lifts count. He also goes on about how the message is more important than the lifts.
Also it's fun to watch him set up the lifts. Sometimes it's a side press, others a push. Then other times, just breaking the weights off the hooks count, and when it got really heavy, rolling the dumbbell handle in the holder seemed to count.

::) ::) ::) ::) that's the only knock on bill pretending that sri was actually doing something otherworldly that and the insane movie he made with nautilus art jones. nice dan lurie plates though.

Bottom pic, he has a horizontal crease across his stomach as did a lot of guys back then. Was this a byproduct of sucking in the stomach for pictures, because they weren't super lean?
-
bill is a nice guy BUT he has to stop his lying about being natural and not doing roids other than that nilevar once or twice. lol. he was juicing just like the rest of them. thats why he went vegetarian cuz his cholesterolwas high and thought it was the meat.lol . didnt know roids raise cholesterol back then.

That's a bunch of BS, he did much more like everyone else. BUT, he is a great man...

Someone should do an interview with him
I did a short interview with him in 2011 when I gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award at one of my contests in Chicago -

I agree. He has lived and incredible life and his training knowledge is through the roof. He doesn't need some exercise physiology Phd. He knows from empirical knowledge all the answers.
-
Pearl is what got me into bodybuilding. What an immense physique! Legend.
-
:)
Great picture with one of my old training partners from the Pearls gym days and still good friend, Doug Brignole.

Thank you John. Unfortunately the video in your link wasn't working, but I've found another video about his earlier award, and I assume it was you who did the voice-over?

No, that wasn't me. The video link I posted works on my computer but not on my phone for some reason. Unfortunately, RX didn't put it on YouTube back then so I can't
copy the link from there.
